It's not only limited to Islamic Sharia laws but its also widely used in many other countries, including number of federal states in U.S.A, it is part of the historical tradition of many civilisaztions and modern states, due to number of reasons, costs of keeping prisons, to create fear amongst criminals for prevention of crime, and to some extends moral and ethical basis of "eye for an eye".

Yes it is Iran, not Iraq, but lets remember that its not the people of Iran that are corrupt, its the government. Some of these men I believe were executed for rape but many were executed merely because they were drug addicts. The endless hangings in Iran are tragic. It's shameful! I agree if they have really done what is said should be punished, but not this type. Execution is not the right punishment, they should be jailed, and also what comes out of showing and filming the executions? only mixed feelings, where some people begin to hate the police, judges, and government.
