I swear to god i remember this damn commercial haven't seen this since 1987( i was 9)back then living in northeastern ohio if i'm not mistaken they ran gold circle( another department store) outta business and replaced them those were the days i used to love going shopping G1 transformers there too yall know i'm getting old by recalling my childhood memories i'll be turning 34 years old in a couple of months man i love taking a trip down memory lane...
We had a couple of Hills here in Harrisburg PA...Most of them became Ames...I think one was briefly a Zayre's. We also had Jamesway, Murphy's Mart, Best, Kiddie City, Woolworths (the one I remember was up in Pottsville), KB Toys, etc....But Hills was always my favorite, and the one I really miss.
I don't know if North Carolina had a Hills back then. Do you guys remember the BesT store? I used to look forwards to going to BesT or Toys R Us, & Brendle's just to see what kind of Knight Rider toys were on display. The toys now days have No imagination what-so-ever. Cars, Barbie, Spiderman, Transformers, that's about it. :( There's no: Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard, A-Team, Magnum P.I., The Fall Guy, HardCastle & McCormick, Airwolf, etc..anymore, kiss those days goodbye. :(
i remember hills ...when i lived in syracuse ny...go orange, man hills was it all the toys, all the systems, all the nacho cheeze you could eat...wow the memorys.
Damn do i miss Hills!! The toys, the video games, the popcorn and slushies, and the fireworks on the 4th of July!! Hills was the best! I like Walmart, but it will never, EVER, top Hills in my heart!!
Our Hills was closed. Now it's an empty, vandalized building with broken glass and weeds all over the abandoned parking lot. A crackhead hangout with fires inside after nightfall. Ahh, Christmas shopping just ain't what it used to be, huh, kids?
@almejri the quality on this is awesome thanx for posting!!The memories and countless Star Wars and Transformers bought from this store, their bitching selection of Halloween masks and the f@#king cheese on their nachos....the best! You truly don't know what you got till it's gone .I feel a little sorry for the generations that grew up never knowing life without Walmart.
I rember this commercial. I also remember shopping at hills eating at the food stand. Is hills still around back east. I moved to new Mexico when I was 13 and we don't have one out here!!!
@midgetgirl5 Hills was bought out by the Ames store chain in i believe 1999 and they converted all the Hills to Ames stores. Then, the Ames store chain went out of business in 2002 i think.
I'd take hills over walmart anyday. My mom and I would walk there -about a mile- every weekend. She'd take me shopping then we'd eat at the food stand or whatever. The customer service was so much better back in the 80's,even the overall atmosphere was so much friendlier and down to earth back then.
I remember Hill's always having dioramas of every toy they sold during the big Christmas sales.. He-man, Gi. Joe, Transformers, and Go-bots. I miss HIll's!
Back when toys were cool. Im very lucky to have been a little kid in the 80's. Wasnt there another Hills commercial that had a puppet lion talking in it or something like that?
Does anyone remember Hills having .20 cent hot dogs and pop corn on memorial day weekend and around easter? I remember them having special days like that....let me know if I'm right or wrong.....
I got that GI Joe Aircraft carrier for Christmas! It took all afternoon to apply all of the decals and my parents wanted to get rid of it because it took up so much space. Hmmm, I wonder what happened to that thing?
I never went to Hills ever as there were none around me (I am from NH) and what were their stores like or their toy department. I LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL!
The atmosphere of the stores back then just seemed so customer friendly, like it wasn't a hassle anytime you shopped. The toys were great, but of course I am speaking from the 80's era.
I remember this jingle fondly, so thanks for posting this. Hills will always be where the toys are.
I did a little digging and found out the woman (yes, it's a woman) playing Spryte, the character here, was Tamera "Tammy" De Treaux, whose claim to fame was playing the costumed E.T. in the movie. Sadly, she passed away in 1990.
You said it. That popcorn smell was my association with Hills too. My cheapass mother would buy the big long bags of Hills popcorn and put it under her long coat so we could have popcorn for the movies in the mall. I loved their popcorn and everything else about their stores. Our kids have two choices... Wally mart or Target and that is it. Corporations suck.
@c0deMunkey "All they have is Walmart." - Oldest excuse in the book.
We have more options than that, in fact, not as many as we used to due to bankruptcies and buyouts. We may have Walmart, but we also have Kmart, and Target, as well as ShopKo, Pamida, Meijer, Duckwall-ALCO, Roses, etc. depending on what region we live in.
@SpongeStorm4000 I hear ya man,i'm glad that K-mart is still aroud, there's still one near where I live. And target's okay,I just wish we had more of them in the regions. Hills was a darn good store though, while it lasted.
@c0deMunkey I agree. Hill's at least made an effort to make customers feel welcome. Walmart snubs in people's faces that they "stomped the comp" and are the only game in town.
@c0deMunkey I never went to Hills, bc I lived in MD during my childhood, but I remember seeing these commercials, because my family and I lived close to PA in Harford. I always wanted to go to Hill. But one place kids of this generation will never experience is Woolworth. I loved Woolworths as a child.
@Beautifulstar24 we had Hills, a Woolworths, and AM&As. I even remember "Satlers".
In 1990, I was hired on the spot after my sister got a job there. we were paid in CASH and lunch hours were just that, AN HOUR! plus TWO 15-min breaks. I worked both shifts!
Now I couldn't get a job if I flashed my boobies, LOL.
i remember this. I have been looking for this commercial for months, no probably years now. So glad you posted it. Do you know if there were more with the elf? I seem to remember more but I dunno. I could be wrong i guess.
Thank You!!! I got most of my toys as a kid during the 1980's from Hills and remember these great comericals and jingle like they were yesterday. I truly miss Hills department stores.
In 1999, when Ames took over the local Hills here in Springfield, Ohio, the prices shot up and the selection dwindled. Within a year, this Ames shut down. The building is still vacant.
