  • This song is so cute! Basically a rewrite of "There Goes My Baby", and Diana admits as much in her book.

  • This Funny is Diane and Flo wrote this first song..Yet Diane sings lead..if Flo was the suppose to be lead why is she NOT leading..Diane does Tears of Sorrow, and Mary does the B side. flo does the backup..Fact is DIane wwas always the lead.

  • @blkshepherd That's very interesting! Throughout the years there have been so many conflicting stories about who the lead was supposed to be in the beginning of their career. Lord only knows what the actual true story of the Supremes was? Was Diane really evil? Was Flo truly a victim? Was Mary totally innocent in Flo's demise? Was Berry Gordy a cold calculator who caused their breakup? Oh well...

  • @FredPellon0208 Diane wasent as much evil as she was ambitious..probably driven, a bitch, a go getter, a make it happen type person. berry gordy i dont see cold calculator. i see a man who introduced young males and females With Talent to the World whereas they would have Never been heard.. Mary, no more innocent than diane or flo..young and was living her life having fun as any young woman would have. the breakup. all three women simply Grew Up. they were teens when they Formed in 1958.

  • wow I love it notice how music changed drastically!

  • there is a fourth member of the Primettes on this recording. Her name is Barbara Terry, then the wife of Funk Brother Mike Terry.

  • wow who is singing lead they sound......wow

  • @lalaalaa90 Diana is singing lead - proof that she wasn't the best singer in the group. She only got better with heavy investment from Motown and hard work. Mary and Flo were the r e a l vocalists at this point.

  • Right here anyone can hear Diane voice cut through any of the intruments.and other girls voices. its distinct. even an intrument has to be tuned. of course her voice got better.the nasal made her unique. once it was tuned it was what caught the public ear. mary and flo was jus good background singers .nothing unique. good but nothing unique. dont be mad.

  • CORRECTION... Berry Gordy KICKED Flo out of the group... she didn't LEAVE... and lets not judge the situation or lives of people we dont know... im sure there are lots of things we DONT have a clue about the upbringing of Flos 3 girls.

  • Don't forget to watch the Florence Ballard (Unsung) story on the TVOne channel Sunday June 28th 09

  • This song came out in 1959. I was also 59 years old and I owned a 1959 pink Chevy Impala. I loved the Supremes then and I still do now.

  • Whos the lead singer ?

  • Diane who at this time was very nasally.her voice improved when she started singing in sexier lower keys. All the supremes had great voices and should have had the opportunity to lead more and be coached like diane.they could have been the like the Mcqire sisters or the Andrew sisters making big bucks In vegas. But diane still commands the big bucks.

  • Diana when she was 13 years old.

  • actually everyone this song wasnt even released on motown or written by anyone on its staff......it was their first single on LUPINE records

  • I disagree. Most of the early "Motown" recordings were written, played, and recorded by the fledgling Motown group.....then, since Berry didn't have a distribution network he had them released on other labels, such as United Artists, Anna, Chess, and others. I can vouch for the recording itself, it has that gritty, heavy bass and drum, piano, and the flute. Listen to Come To Me by Marv Johnson.

  • Wow! I love this song.

  • They were great, but there were thousands of other groups with a similar sound. The marketing people got a hold of them and apparently wanted to create a new and unique sound. That's why Dianna went into the lead. It is sad that Flo and Mary were marginalized, first as back up and then as background. An unecessary waste of talent.

  • Not 'really' similar 'sound', but SAME "MUSIC"! ALL of the songs, (generally) followed that same 1-2-3-4-chord pattern. Everything was that way, and it took something 'different' to separate them. When your stuff is like everybody else's, sadly you're judged against whoever is the top of that at the 'moment'. But THAT was lost too as everyone had that same 'sound'! And the real potential is not discovered in a 'cookie-cutter' environment, even when there are hits!

  • The acoustics weren't that good but I loved hearing The Primettes.I loved Pretty Baby even more. The acoustics were better on that one.

  • boy was Diana Ross chubby in picture!!

  • Historic Stuff !! The Pre- Supremes sound ! If anyone is lucky enough to own the Supremes first album " Meet The Supremes" ( which was unusually issued before their first single) there is a track included called "Never Again" which was recorded as The Primettes. Had it been known how big they were gonna be this would never have happened.

  • I have the album and NEVER AGAIN and might post it in the future =)

  • I love this song! Diana was a little girl but this song is a lot more R&B so it sounds nothing like her top Supreme's hits. Seems like she was allowed to sing with a little more soul. Flo sounds beautiful as usual.

  • The early Motown stuff 59-61 had more of a r&b sound, Berry hadn't developed the strategy of going after the multitudes of white baby boomers yet.

  • According to Diana, they wrote this song themselves!

  • It's actually a decently written song.

Motown - at least on their debut - should have let them write a few songs and on The Supremes Sing Country, Western & Pop

  • Flo tried to write material, and said that Mary and Diane seemed to like it. But Flo also then said that Berry Gordy would hear her stuff and say, "Hmph, that ain't nothin'."

Would have loved to hear a song written by Flo!

  • Yes I heard - what a shame. It would have worked well in the early days

  • Well you got to respect Berry Gordy's opinion! Look what he did.

  • How old were they in that picture?

  • Diana,Flo, and Mary are pretty good considering how inexperience they were when they made this and pretty baby

  • I love this song. When i first heard it i was blown away by Florence Ballard so young but full of life totally stealing the spot from the other three members with her wailing and her background became Leading lyrics! i love pretty baby as well!

  • They sound so young!

Who would've guessed that they would become one of the biggest groups in the 60's!

  • i see that none seem to care about the comment i made for this song. oh well i stand by what i said! lol dont forget to check out my new video.

  • thanks so much for this I've been waiting for ages to listen to this !!!!!!!!!!

  • I like it and pretty baby i like pretty baby better becuase of flo parts and marys lead singing

  • SOME BODY UP LOADED THIS SWEET

  • this is included in the 40th anniversary box set along with pretty baby, good to hear it on here, thanks for posting

  • You are so welcome!!!

  • Where did you download this song?

  • I know I'm the odd one here but I actually like this song better than Pretty Baby. Maybe because you can REALLY hear Florence in the background. hahaha.

  • Well we have atleast one person that likes this song instead of pretty baby dont get me wrong i like pretty baby. but i like this one cuz i can hear Florence

  • same plus it as a sorta faster beat

  • Na I prefer Pretty Baby Florence sounds AMAZING doing her operatic parts on that, that is probably the best part of that song. This is good but Diana sounds terribly inexperienced, like she was at the time but this is cute

  • I-too , prefer This Song/Recording over the FlipSide.

  • the first Supremes/Primettes recording thank you i gotta get this song to put up myself where did you find it?

  • lil missy, your a darlin!!! Thanks so much.

Pretty baby is the better song. Just a note, Barbara Martin no Betty McGlown are sining on this song per Dreamgirls. There are two session singers that so happened to also be named Barbara and Betty.

  • You are so welcome.

Yea "Pretty Baby" is better as you can see everybody thinks so.lol.

  • oh yes it was 1959 not 1960

  • This is cute, The Primettes (The Supremes) first recording. Nice to hear Diana before she was thoroughly developed. Woo the backgrounds are loud on this one, especially Flo lol. I prefer Pretty Baby though. Note Diana's attempt at improvising at the end that goes quite wrong lol

  • Yes it is. "tears on sorrow" releast by LuPine with Betty McGlown in the back =)

    Flo is so clear here.

I think the harmonies on this are so scratchy nice =)

  • Diana sounds supremes at the end. What are you smokin'

  • Diana sounds cute but admit it, she does sound inexperienced, especially when she ad-libs towards the end but it's ADORABLE, lol. I still prefer Pretty Baby, everyone just sounds better, even the backgrounds with Diana in but Flo just steals it with her piercing operatic parts, here and there

  • Inexperienced? Were you experienced in high school?

  • Thx soooo much lilmissy691

for this wunderful song. This is so early by the primettes =) I love this Flo sang so loud in the back you can only hear her schu bab schu bab =) and diana in on the lead. I think theres betty in the back with mary.

  • ok missy i hate to say but i really didnt like this song. pretty baby is wayyyyyyyyyy better. sorry :(
