don't know about this particular product, but if you're thinking about buying a Tascam, be sure to look beyond the technical merits. They have a pretty bad reputation regarding their customer service, especially regarding Apple. See for yourself, go here and take your pick, there are a lot of angry customers regarding several Tascam products that are left unsupported: (google: apple discussions fw-1884, second link)

Thanks for the sound test; not many around. Thinking about picking one of these up for some easy ambiant recordings. Any chance you could film (or comment) something on your phone/pod in landscape with the im2? So that the mics are standing vertically instead of horizontally- Tascam touts this as one of the uses but I'm slightly sceptical about how a pair of vertically standing mics sounds.

Thanks for the review... I've been looking at this for a mobile rig... having just been using the onboard mic on my iPad. I'm curious. I know you're using the mic on an iPod. What recording software did you use? I'm using Garageband and Multitrack DAW on the iPad.

the onboard mic is also not bad at all actually...the differences are apparent, but fairly subtle (especially at the beginning)

The interesting thing is that there was the Mikey mic for the previous iteration of iPhone and then Apple apparently changed the pin configuration of the connector and rendered it incompatible. It's good to know that you still can power an external mic that way. Everything I was reading said it was no longer possible. I really didn't want to plug a lousy dynamic mic into the phone jack at the top... they all sound like sheet! Thanks.

The Tascam unit sounds just fine - looking (listening?) forward to your putting it to work. It may have been better to compare the Tascam to the internal mic of your i-thing, since you can position those for best effect, while the internal cam mic simply tries to pick up everything in the room. Getting good sound directly, without editing, on a cam recording usually requires an external mic. Sadly (for me), they made the latest cheap cams cheap partly by losing the ext mic input.

The on board mic sounds "brighter" to me. Maybe it's just placement, or maybe it's the filter and limiters. I guess it depends on how you like your music. Either way, YOU sound fantastic!!

sound is better that onboard 60D mic but you can use a shotgun mic (like RODE Videomic) and plug that straight into your 60D, I think that will save a lot of editing work ;)

@FunmeBelgium It would but if I'm correct, the Rode doesn't have a built in pre-amp and therefore has to use the canon's (which is not.. great) and personally I've experienced that particular mic and wasn't very satisfied, unfortunately.. I'd really love to have one go straight into the camera!

@DxDutch : I think the best thing is to if you use an external mic plugged in to your 60D turn off al your canon corrector stuff (don't know what it does I've a pansonic.. :p) and do audio correcting afterwards. don't know if its hard to do (and how to do) but probably there are some great applications that do the correction fully automatic.

the canon one records it naturally, if you would have foam on your walls you woldn't have any bad recording quality of this - well not really the best but still.

@DxDutch you can hear a big difference in the two qualities, the first Canon 50D more high strings. The 3nd Tascam iM2 more base to the sound (low strings) no echo either, couldn't tell if you were in a studio or not with live condenser microphones!
