this is spoofing a very old Star trek Myth called the "red shirt" syndrome or something along the lines of "red shirt" where a no name officer or cadet would get killed in a episode to show the gravitas of the sitiuation.. it's especially hilarious because sam's character is aware of it that myth, but makes it through the entire movie, without the main cast of characters not even knowing his real name

This is one of the greatest moments ever put to film. Sam Rockwell stole this movie and was hysterical. Love the way he walks out and then turns, arches eybrow and gives that smile and finger point. Classic.
