  • FUCK, I was expecting Beethoven and I find this. I dont say this is bad, but comparing to Beethoven IT IS VERY BAD

  • 5:46 What's the instrument this woman's playing? :s

  • Escucho pero no ubico en donde esta la guitarra! Felicidades a todos!!!!

  • This crap is pretty cheesy, actually. Especially the main theme.

  • @eysikal u say its cheesy well think bout it u try writing a song with over 10 instruments and then try to talk bout someone else

  • @AqeelTank Since when is being able to perform the same task a prerequisite for critiquing the same? Would you bash a movie critic for his poor review of a film because he himself had never directed a major production? Just juvenile, short-sighted logic.

  • That was great!

  • Decent, but it ain't exactly Beethoven's Eroica, that's for sure!

  • Fractals are simply taking a source and making more of the same, with growth factors. Tan Dun is information as music, which is not new the slightest bit; except, Madelbrot et al. actually, like Dun, looked at the forest to understand fractals and music Find my profile. • I find it so cool to watch all the violin bows moving in sync. Awesome Performance! :D

  • 6:42 ????

  • I love the energy Tan Dun expresses in his conducting. Truly inspiring.

  • 6:38 you can physically see the musicality pouring out of them.

  • 5:30 OMG MINI PIANO WANT!!!!!!

  • WTF, So Boring and to bad orchestrated. :(

  • This sych a good piece of music!

  • I don't like the guitar playing along with the trumpet. I liked it more with trumpet only.

  • how can you people out there not like this song. you BASS TURDS.

  • 6:36 was -- in my opinion -- oe of the best parts... the music is so strong and emotional, and everyone playing showed great enthusiasm and it's easy to tell they were having a great time and felt appreciated AND appreciative for everything happening. Tan Dun was INCREDIBLE, and he (along with the orchestra) did a beautiful job and, I hope, will keep doing what they are doing here... I'm sure they will be known world-wide if they do! :D

  • Can cheap taste be any more costly?

  • borat 0:00 - 2:30

  • @mykeBC

I listened to them simultaneously and I have quite a musically trained ear, I muted one while the other played, there is the tiniest, if any, difference, they are different tempos at points, but there is not much difference between the two

  • I just listened to this version and the one by the LSO. Even to the untrained ear, you can tell the two apart. Unless I'm being fooled by acoustics and recording quality, the LSO has a noticeably more refined, polished sound than the YTSO. Then again, some may find that the fresh sound of the YTSO may actually fit the theme of this piece more.

.. oh and Tan Dun seems to have changed the ending slightly between the 2 performances.

  • @mykeBC Lol the Ending of this version is more intense and seems like a better way to end the piece, If I was Tan Dun, I would re-write the ending, Because a Fresh Orchestra + a Intense ending = a very amazing way and powerful way to end the piece. :)

  • @xXJawruWolfXx i agree. I personally prefer the ending done here.. but done with more of the precision of the LSO, especially with the mistimed cymbal. hehe. still it's a wonderful performance.. and definitely something to appreciate. :D

  • @mykeBC Woot! :D

  • @mykeBC totally agree.. when I first heard this version about half a year ago I really thought it was crap... but I ran into the LSO version just days before and fell love with it...lol...

    performer matters...

  • Comment removed

  • I do like it very much.....BRAVO

  • What the masterpiece and classical symphony. Excellent! No doubt about that.

  • performance starts 2:30

thumbs up so people can skip the speech

  • A saw this live in munich and it was amazing... it's an awesome piece of music :)

  • @92Whisper

i saw it, too. so amazing! and tan dun has got a great personality

  • OMG JACKIE CHAN

  • @lv999iam That was so uncalled for :\

  • @lv999iam -sighs-

  • @xXJawruWolfXx I'm just another mentally retarded person who likes being random, don't mind me.

  • the skinny girls nose looks wierd

  • I agree with xXJawruWolf

  • @Adambomb645 Thank you. :P

  • a bit irritating got bits of western... and i do not like the feel of a film score.. of a western.... just do not like it.. and too much percursion.... just not good enough..

  • Cymbalist Fail 6:43

  • I think this piece is really diverse, I like it a lot.

  • The violins sound so soft compared to that once percussionist ><

  • 5:21 lol is that a mini piano?! cool!

  • @NathanaelXavier I think it's called a celeste.

  • @MessengerForte cool thanks :)

  • some beautiful parts others not

  • 这个版本和London的那个比起来略怂啊....

  • The wonderful thing about art is that no ones taste is the same. I really like this piece...

  • Why is everyone Being idiots and saying crap like "percussion fail" and things like that? I like to see you conduct something like this being performed for Millions and possibly billions of people. This has to be possibly the most beautiful piece of music and most aggressive yet have the tenderness. So before opening your mouth think, can you write something compared to this or even conduct a orchestra? yeah, possibly not.

  • @xXJawruWolfXx I think it's because they weren't there, so they try to comfort themselves by finding every little mistake.

  • @FlyBorray Apparently, either that or they can't appreciate music, No matter what it sounds like.

  • @xXJawruWolfXx I don't get your point. If he has SUCH a talent to conduct and compose as well he should not waste his talent on something uninspired like that.

  • @Simson616 So what, Music is music, If you don't like, then fine, you're are just missing out on the most amazing things that music can create, such as little mistakes like then ones in the performance. It still sounded amazing, regardless if a group of violins played a F natural instead of F#. Music is anything, regardless of the texture and clarity of it all.

  • @xXJawruWolfXx I did not talk about the intrumentalists and their skills - it's just that tan dun won a lot of big prices for his compositions and thus you could expect a big composition that does not only sound nice but also offers you some kind of deep experience, different layers of meaning and some new points of view on our tonal system in reference to the main topic of this symphony - but I can find nearly none of these aspects and thus I'm disappointed...

  • @Simson616 Why are we even arguing over this? I think it's good, you think it's bad. so what? We have two different views on music, So just drop it okay. Im done with it and im pretty sure you are to. so let's just go on with our lives and enjoy what music we THINK is good.

  • @xXJawruWolfXx Well there are several reasons :D

like for example: I'm a little fascist talking about what can be considered "good" and "bad" music.

or: I like trolling people on the internet - especially those who have no clue what they are actually talking about :) (in this case I should mention: I wrote a seminar paper for mah musicology studies about tan dun and that so called symphony above) and NO. as I am a troll I am definitely not done with it :D you're stupid ^^

  • 6:45?something wrong?

  • Crash Cymbal FAIL

    6:43

Actually the whole precussion is a FAIL.

  • @MozartJunior22

that's because MTT is just acting, not conducting, especially in the few bars before 6:43 you can clearly see that he is only aware of the camaras focused on him.

  • @bonajkukoj It's Tan Dun conducting here.

  • @MozartJunior22

Yes, of course, it's him I meant.

MTT is quite a good conductor, and his Idea of the YTSO is great!

But I really don't like Tan Dun's style of composing and conducting

  • Is this the music for every award ceremony at the Beijing Olympic 2008? At least the main theme.

  • I was there in person, AMAZING performance considering the time constraints and the assembly of musicians from all over the world.

  • Did the trumpet came a little late?

  • @HectorJW2007 no.... he came prematurely...

    har har.

  • To be honest ever since I watched this part of the concert whilst it was being broadcasted live here on YouTube, this piece always disappointed me. I mean out of any of the other pieces they could have played, this one was what made the YouTube Symphony what it was. Out of any of the other pieces, this is the one they should have known front and back, hence not screwing it up. London Symphony did it way better in my opinion. Bowing was off, timing was off. It's not a hard piece at all.

  • @JDBMW1: I had the entire score in front of me trying to figure out where they could have gone wrong. NO WHERE! Furthermore, this was one of the last pieces they played of the night, no way could you be nervous by this point.

  • @JDBMW1 Yeah, it feels uncomfortable. LSO did a great job. They can sight read this stuff to recording standard

  • @JDBMW1 I completely agree. It was pretty off most of that piece, especially aroud 6:47 or so.

  • 3:50 trumpet on the far right is Sylar.

  • that happens when they don't look at the conductor ;) come on they are not Professionals ;) they are nervous (or scared) and just staring at the sheets :) watch the LSO version :)

  • @indeedmediaCEO With all due respect, it doesn't matter if they are professional or not. yes maybe scared/nervous but that should be over within the first minute of playing. But i do agree with you with the staring at the sheets part.

  • Is it just me or is the whole thing not together and the time messed up!? People are late!!!

  • FUCK YES!!!

  • BRAVO! BRAVO! that was fun :D:D

  • Percussions are too loud. when they play you can barely hear the violins.

  • I expected more. I dont like it.

  • @janoschii you gotta give them credit for trying something new...i mean, an online orchestra is so unique. HOWEVER, THE MUSIC WOULD BE MUCH BETTER IF IT WAS LED BY HANS ZIMMER!

  • For whatever reason, the wheel rims and brake disks seem really out of tune. Not the percussionists' fault though. Other than that this is awesome!

  • Didn't like the Eb trumpeter, or the orchestration of the piece really, I'm afraid to say.

  • @Haeronthegreat

Eb? You mean the C trumpet? It is rather strange that the other two are on Bb horns and the principle dude is on a C horn.

  • BRAVISSIMO!!!!

  • that was was amazing!!!! i really like it

  • Buen video,

  • powerful

  • POOOOF TREMENDA.

  • Finally! someone who can see Beethoven's greatness! permit me to call you my friend and join you in that toast!

  • REYNALDO

Se siente como una pieza que entusiasma por los lados de la creacion del compositor...buena¡

  • I like it. Especially the string section. :)

  • GREEEEAT GREEEATTT GREAAATTT

  • That was a very interesting piece! I enjoyed that very much! I loved how all flavors of the orchestra were all used together. Excellent job!

  • Honestly, all the other pieces on the program were better written than this one.

  • Some of this remind me of something.... I don't know what. Certain notes here and there, like a thing in the back of your mind.

It is fantastic though, how he combined so many instruments, from different musical traditions, into one being. Much love, and I rather hope he does this for them again.

  • its awesome - i really love this piece

  • Reading some of these keyboard musicians comments really make me sick! I love the percussion! It really makes me wanna jump out of my seat!

  • Personally I really like this piece. It's one of my favorites. :)

Isn't Tan Dun conducting his piece he composed? So the way they played is the way he told them to play. Unless when they first started they forgot everything he told them.

Oh well still love this piece. :D

  • umm.......that is tan dun conducting....

  • Yes, I know. I was expecting a yes answer to the question. thanks for commenting on my comment.

  • FOR me i like the music.. heheheh i really enjoy it...

  • 2:40

  • thank you for the shortcut XD

  • The wheel things that had those arpeggio tunes weren't as good as the ones the LSO used.

  • really? i haven't heard the LSO's version yet, but i love the percussion, huge focus on it in this piece

  • it was ok .. but i still like the LSO's version better.

yes the percussion is WAY to loud for this piece

  • The percussion isn't even in sync with the orchestra at all. Its as if it wanted to take control over the whole piece of music. It totally spoils the whole piece. Not sure if its being amplified, but the original one by the London symphony orchestra was much better. This is a great disappointment.

  • wow i was totally dissapointed when i heard this after hearing the LSO version. Whose idea was it to mike the percussion?! it made me cringe especially since i am a percussionist. that was awful. the toy piano, as cool as it is, it just doesnt fit does no one hear that?! the whole piece just sounded very unprofessional.

  • wow that is awesome i love it

  • It sounds as if the orchestra and percussion are fighting, and not even listening to each other...

  • yeah the clanging of the brakes are too much

  • well for that i think you are correct

  • i don't like the guitar (toy piano?) at all it takes over the beautiful parts where the sections should be able to open and sing and the percussion is to loud. Other than that it is really nice especially the parts without the percussion

  • Why the Performance of a piece by Antonin Dvorak played by YTSO cannot be watched?

  • WOW what's that mini-piano? I personally love the version previously with LSO more.. This version is too much with the guitar and the timpani clouded everything.. what's happening to the percussion? Anyway I love the theme If he took Beethoven as teacher... should he use more standardized orchestral instruments? It has gone too far away from Beethoven.. BTW..just curious are the trumpeters using normal Bb turmpets or in other keys (in E maybe?) That' s a hard key form trumpet!
  • Hmmm, it seems like the audio is a bit messed up and unfocused. It sounds like the music is fighting a battle against the obnoxious clamoring of the percussion instead of using it for support

  • And this awful anyway, it doesn't matter which part of the population it aims, is a horrible kistch music full of cliches and horrible mistakes of orquestration. Beethoven would feel repulse of this kind of music, with no means, no message but consumption... Horrible music!!!

  • I don't deny that it horrible music, lol. At least the rest of the concert was good. And even if we can't create as good music now in this genre, the classics will live on forever. BTW, what do you think of Festal Scenes by Ito? I played Tenor Sax in that and found it enjoyable...

  • Could you tell me what orchestration mistakes were made specifically? I mean you are obviously a musical genius. I would really love to hear some of your work put out onto youtube so everyone else can see how great it is.. Really man it was meant to be a crowd pleaser and I think it accomplished that and I, a musician thought it was nice, however cliche it may be. But I would really love to hear what you say the specific orchestration mistakes were made. thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • before you get all hot and bothered I was just asking. I would love to hear some of your music is it on youtube??? And I would also appreciate it if you could tell me where exactly the mistakes are because I am a young(well college level) musician and I do not know too much about orchestration mistakes, and I was saying that I am sure the general public does not either.

  • The general public is who the music world relies on to support the composers. No one said you had to I would just like to know and hear! and the only reason I was a little agitated was because you completely attacked his work, I do not know how you would like it if someone did that to your on a public forum. Thanks!

  • @EdiEllerymissing There are no orchestration "mistakes". There are just ways of orchestrating that do not fit with your idea of a good orchestration.

anyway - the fact that you're into "contemporary" music makes me wonder if you did expect anything else than this from an internet(!) symphony...

  • @Simson616 You know what, you're right. Actually, Tan Dun is quite good at orchestration... That's why I have to delete my comment. Now I see the mistake in my words.

  • @EdiEllerymissing We have to be carefull 'bout what we like to call right or wrong. It often happens that people call things wrong which do just not fit into their cultural concept.

  • Comment removed

  • I think this song was purposefully aimed to people of all kinds not just musicians or art zealots, so they could capture a wider audience. Take a chill pill from a fellow musician.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @EdiEllerymissing Please call me when they publish your next masterpiece or when your next concert sells out. With criticisms like that, you must be sitting on some kinda talent. All music is necessary, even the mediums you have no aptitude to appreciate.

  • Comment removed

  • @EdiEllerymissing Truthfully I didn't like the song either. All I'm saying is that musicians make artistic strides in their own ways and should be allowed to do so without being undermined. Art is changing, not dying. Btw Lachenmann's "Schwankungen am Rand" is one of my favorites. To further solidify my point, Mozart or Beethoven would have considered using guitars in classical music blasphemy.

  • Comment removed

  • @EdiEllerymissing

I have to respectfully disagree. While art is a subjective matter, this composition is very well written and performed (though pop sucks imo). The musicians had limited time to play and aren't professionals like the LSO. The "inserts of movie's music" was Tan Dun's homage to John Williams used at the 2008 Olympics China, so there's a reason for that.

I was at the Piano Texas Festival and several symphonic performances this year, the art of classical music is far from dying

  • @EdiEllerymissing how do you define art? there is no definition for art take a look at classial music there are different periods over the past 400 years art don't die, you die and your view of art is shit

  • @EdiEllerymissing can you even fucking compose a orchestra piece for babies? guess not, you should just go wear a traning bra

  • Comment removed

  • @EdiEllerymissing

Can you send me your work?

Perhaps I can get my orchestra here in California to play it.

    :]

    Message me.

  • @AznPandaFTW If that's true it would be nice. Send me your e-mail and I'll send you one of my works. I hope your orchestra is professional, cause it's not easy music.

  • I think of this piece the same way Boulez said of Verdi's music when interviewed by Joan Peyse: "Stupid, stupid, stupid!"

This kitsch... this crap... this trash is one of the worst things that has been penned in the 21st century, and is unfortunately paraded as art music. It is perhaps worse than bad film music. Tan Dun, you can do better. You have done better, with stuff like Death and Fire. Why must you give in and write this kitsch?

  • I love that master piece:) awesome=)

  • amazing

  • thoes arnt part of a syphany

  • guitar?!?! percussion?!?!?!?!?!?

  • i dont like the guitar playing through the trumpet

  • Bad cymbals part!

  • I notice it too, bad timing.

  • it sounded more balenced live.... alot more

  • ahh this is so awesome!

they should do a youtube youth orchestra!

  • 5:20 mini piano?

  • is there any way to get a hold of the sheet music for this piece? I know it was up during the audition period, but has been completely removed from the internet?

  • William, is that your question??

  • excuse me, but do I know you?

  • lol the piano woman looked like she was typing on a keyboard. how cool!

amazing, obviously. tan dun conducts hilariously :)

at 3:23 or 3:24 was the guy going to play, and he stopped? was that a near mistake?

  • he was just blowing in it to warm it up

  • Comment removed

  • oh ok. I just never seen that happen during a concert. i take my comment back.

  • The main theme is nice, but repetitive. And the piece would've been about 5,000 times better without the extremely obnoxious percussion! And this is coming from a percussionist - the extra-loud brake drums sound like someone is constantly interrupting the music.

  • I wonder if they overdid it when they mic'd the percussion...

  • i really like this piece :]

  • not as good as the LSO

  • Surely not :)

  • Also the fact that the quality of the recording sucked!

  • Plus the percussion equipment isnt as good as LSO. And they arent as professional. And they havent learned to balance!

  • i bet you're worst jrdkirksey
