I'm at 11 days post-op for a closed wedge lateral HTO & I am still at the "toe touch" stage. Any weight or bending of the knee is extremely painful & I am still on a very strong pain medication. Is this unusual? Am I just an over & above average wuss or has anyone else had this problem?
MrBuckyOhare, your injury was pretty drastic - ACL, PCL and tibial fracture (?tibial plateau), and would be a challenge to any knee surgeon. It may be that the fracture made it too tricky to repair the PCL? HTO is an accepted practice to improve 'posterolateral corner instability' which I suspect you had after this injury.
The person here would not have had instability due to ligament damage, nor a fracture, but instead the outer joint surface had arthritic changes with joint angulation.
Wow...I had a HTO surgery on my left leg and it hurt like crazy...worse pain I have ever felt. I tore my PCL and ACL also with an impact fracture on my tibia before I had the surgery. My surgeon said this HTO surgery is probably the best option for me since he could not repair my PCL or some crap like that. I still have pain daily in the general area that the plate and screws are in, and I can't run anymore, I use to be very athletic. I feel like my surgeon screwed my leg up...any input?
And he also said "This bone on bone contact plus the strong plate make immediate weight bearing possible..the level of discomfort does vary..she is at the good end of the spectrum..but not that unusual..Having said that some patients struggle and only wean off crutches at the 6 week mark..""
Dr Wilson says "With regards to the patient walking 3 weeks after the hto..she was a closing wedge. As long as the opposite cortex is not breached, the bone on bone makes the osteotomy very stable..patients are often relatively pain free. I have had some patients go home on day 2 post op with very little pain.."
I asked Mr (Dr) Adrian Wilson to respond, and he says "Patients universally walk from day one following surgery..this was a closing wedge which people recover from a little quicker..on the whole most closing wedge pts walk as well as the lady in the video at 3-4 weeks and 6 weeks for opening wedge..that's one of the big advances of the procedure".
This lady had a medial closing wedge osteotomy for lateral compartment disease. See the bottom part of this webpage - kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEnotes/node/2146

@kneeguru I was told by my ortho NOT to put any weight on mine, except toe touch only for balance if I was comfortable...
