Hmm - played around with it a bit and finally got it - the low E is down to D and the A is down to G, then it all jibes, but I still can't quite get how your picking the bit where you sing 'always my ways' ... are you picking both the 5th and 6th strings on the 3rd fret on the way to your Am7?
its a good speed to sing this at - nice guitar too.
My stepdad has just recorded this, and his CD will be titled from this song ... so it has family sentimental value for us too - very very evocative song
Hi Kat.. I think wherever anyone is in life then that’s where they are.. same with music.. the voice is your instrument.. its neither good or bad.. it just is.. music expresses who we are inside and in that, we are always perfect and complete.. Have a good day.. Mike
I liked your version...I sing constantly, and just recently heard this song...how had I missed it for so long?! the song is obviously very personal for you...keep singing on...it's a comfort every minute of the waking day, to sing...isn't it?....
playing guitar and singing (although I don't consider myself a good singer) has been a personal and creative passion from an early age.. I was never encouraged.. it was just something I did ( and still do) as a form of expression.. so yes it is a comfort.. and more.. this is a great song.. .. a free born man.. how lucky and grateful..
i have always loved this song.yours is the best version i have heard.i am a bit of a traveler... you must have some traveling blood to sing the song that way.keep it in you
One of my favourite songs, this version, like the one I heard originally in the folk pubs in Scotland, is quiet and contemplative. unlike the boisterous versions you normally hear. thank you.
This is one of the first songs I sang aged four or five years. Was a common song in Derry. 1966. Long long time since I listened. Good man. I think Paul Brady and the Johnsons recorded this also.
yes, proper song and proper pace,, pity its not a proper performer performing... I wanted to be a beach comber on the Isle of Uig and this song reminds me of that.
Yes it came as a total surprise. It seems that before I met Teddettie (I named her Ted for short) in a charity shop in Nelson, (the south island of NZ) she had been tramping the Inca trail in South America years previously. She became involved in P'ru bear and became surrogate mother to his cub. (Ru's real mother had died in a tragic landslide on the north face of a little known mountain in the Andies while fishing for rainbow trout in an isolated highland river.)
Ted and P'ru bear lived together as husband bear and wife bear for some years (although they never formally got married or consummated the relationship). So for 5 years they lived in the mountains on the boarder of Chile until Ru Bear was old enough to fend for himself. Ted then left (reluctantly) to seek the eternal warm porridge bowl that was said to be found under the rainbow in the land of the four seasons where it was said to be neither too hot or too cold..
Some years before all that of course, P'ru's brother had left for England some 50 years ago to seek fame and fortune in England. The brothers had lost touch with each other and the last he knew of his brothers whereabouts, was that he was living rough in some railway station in Central London. So low and behold, Ted was rummaging around on face book the other week (with out telling me) and found a post from P'ru asking anyone knew of his brothers whereabouts .
So without hesitation or warming, Ted sent him a ticket to come to England to help him search for his long lost brother. He turned up some hours ago!. (Ru I believe is currently a life guard on Manly beach in Sydney).. So that's where we are up to. A total surprise. The baby is in fact the cub of P'ru's second marriage, that occurred after Ted had left for the land of four seasons.
It seems that P'ru's second wife (No'mora) is currently serving time in a local goal for illegal man baiting in a recent forest gathering (although she claims she was framed).... and couldn't make the journey.
How is that guitar tuned? Sounds alot like Gordon Bok's version ;)

have listened to more of your work - or play - good to listen to!
I can't accompany myself...am 'bad' at every instrument I've tried...but singing...couldn't live without it...truly...it's my first language!
Keep on enjoying your obviously good life! Kat
