A lot of famous impressionist paintings are just of landscapes and still life; no meaning at all and most impressionism is not very visually appealing or technically skilled (imo). At my school we got these hideous modern art sculptures on campus. It's just twisted metal or ugly shapes with no point, no name, not representing anything, etc. Modern Art is an insult of the highest degree to true artistic creators.
@hitjohnyup We had a fundraiser at my old high school where we collected pop cans and bottles for a year to build modern art pieces. Im pretty sure we were ripped off. We got 3 hideous statues that are just metal tubing that is bent at one place near the top. Its so ridiculous. I really hope that none of the money went to some high priced "artist" because the metal tubing cant be very expensive, and we had $1500 in the budget.

It a con job. I think it is difficult to come up with a style of abstract art that is identifiable with a you as an artist. For example Kandinsky. I realize it is glorified doodling but I can pick his work out of a line up so there is something more there. But I have to agree that the art piece that is accompanied by a short essay to tell you why it doesn't suck is a straight up con job. If it was really good no one would have to tell you. That is why I love the Dada Movement.
People seem to be under the impression that we had expectations when we voted for Obama... the fact is it was a choice between the guy who stood before congress and said "The 'System' is broken" for 25 years and voted with bush 90% of the time and who's second in command is a beauty queen with an IQ of 20.... vs some guy we barely knew. I don't know that modern art is supposed to have a meaning. I think it's about style without any depth or content at all, which gives it a cold quality many people find upseting. That also means their is almost no set structure either, which means you can indeed "take a crap on a desk" and call it art. I understand Cenk's frustration with "modern art." I am a visual artist myself, and the problem that he has is understanding amatuers, really. Great art is part of artistic progression, as a whole and is cerebral. Impressionism was specifically about the phenomenon of light and vibrant color, and so-on. This shoot was superficial from the get-go. It can be compared to football. There's a reason the game is played, just like there's a reason good art is made, outside of base stimulation.

At my school we got these hideous modern art sculptures on campus. It's just twisted metal or ugly shapes with no point, no name, not representing anything, etc. Modern Art is an insult of the highest degree to true artistic creators.

@hitjohnyup We had a fundraiser at my old high school where we collected pop cans and bottles for a year to build modern art pieces. Im pretty sure we were ripped off. We got 3 hideous statues that are just metal tubing that is bent at one place near the top. Its so ridiculous. I really hope that none of the money went to some high priced "artist" because the metal tubing cant be very expensive, and we had $1500 in the budget.

It a con job. I think it is difficult to come up with a style of abstract art that is identifiable with a you as an artist. For example Kandinsky. I realize it is glorified doodling but I can pick his work out of a line up so there is something more there. But I have to agree that the art piece that is accompanied by a short essay to tell you why it doesn't suck is a straight up con job. If it was really good no one would have to tell you. That is why I love the Dada Movement.

I don't know that modern art is supposed to have a meaning. I think it's about style without any depth or content at all, which gives it a cold quality many people find upseting. That also means their is almost no set structure either, which means you can indeed "take a crap on a desk" and call it art. Someone should do that at a modern Art exhibit, those people are savages anyway.

Sure, someone probably could find art in it somehow. Simply defining art by majority rule is anti-artistic. Beauty truely is in the eye of the beholder. Cenk needs some art appreciation classes. The pics with the lady and black eye is a picture. Are pictures art? Depends upon what the viewer of that picture feels.

You haven't studied art, don't know how and why styles rose and fell, what they meant, how they looked, how they're interconnected. People aren't taught about art societally, so the bias is to dislike it because they don't understand it. Funny side note: after all of my studies, I still think Warhol is a hack.

I understand Cenk's frustration with "modern art." I am a visual artist myself, and the problem that he has is understanding amatuers, really. Great art is part of artistic progression, as a whole and is cerebral. Impressionism was specifically about the phenomenon of light and vibrant color, and so-on. This shoot was superficial from the get-go. It can be compared to football. There's a reason the game is played, just like there's a reason good art is made, outside of base stimulation.
