How were previous Foresters ugly? I know styling is subjective. BUT it was a simple clean design, nothing over done or as ugly as what the Koreans were putting out at the time or even American manufactures. I own a 99' L model and its great....I just wish the added that plastic stuff on the back seats so when you throw your dirty mountain bike in there you dont need a tarp or something to cover the seats.
We just bought this car, I love it. In the mountain roads around our town, La Paz, 3600mt altitude, it overtakes EVERYTHING and feels like its limits are still faaaar away.
It's a bliss, and it's only the 2.0 non-turbo version...
The 1st and 2nd generations of the Subaru Forester have very nice styling. I wouldn't same the same thing about the 3rd gen model. Also, the 1st generation was definitely not ugly.

I got a 2004 Forester XS used, its got 98k miles on it now.
This thing has got us through the worst blizzards every time.
I LOOK FOR REASONS TO GO DRIVE WHEN IT SNOWS.
SUBARU'S MAKE SNOW STORMS BEND OVER AND CRY TILL IT HURTS....
When my other car conks out I will replace it with another Forester as well.
Good mileage, low center of gravity, great handling in all conditions.
lots of cargo space as well.

In the US: In the UK, Europe Japan and Latin America they also offered the 2.0 normally aspirated (ours) and the 2.0 turbo (apart from the 2.5's)...
