  • great tune. but you have some of the lyrics messed up

  • The song always trips me out. Perfect for Halloween. Spirits in the night...

  • Manfred Manns BLOWS

  • "I had my head out the window and Janie's fingers were in my cake"- love those lyrics!!!

  • I don't have a bottle of Rose to go to Greasy Lake, but I do have a bottle of Tequila, will that do?...That'll show ya where yer at!

  • Please near with me, I'm vintage. I just got used to Youtube and can't type worth a $hit!

  • WTF!!!! Is every one here as old as I am? I thought I was the last person the planet to remember Spirit in the Night!

  • ITS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was meaning to go to sleep early tonight, but now I just can't help listening to Bruce!

  • @Miika153

Good call! I know the feeling.

  • @Miika153 The same thing is happening to me... haha! :)

  • not a big bruce fan, BUT... this is a really good fuckin song!!!!

  • Manfred Mann's version is much better...

  • @hristotod

aaaaaaaaaaaa you are a botard man !

  • @hristotod no, you couldnt be further from the truth. their version blows. absolutely terrible. you cant play this song without saxaphone. their "attempt" at playing this tune is a disgrace and so are you for thinking such a stupid fucking thought. the world is a worse place because of your existence in it.

  • sick

  • Haha. "I got a bottle of rose so lets try it." This was my favorite line when I thought he says "so lets dry it." I thought that was the coolest slang for drinking. So throughout all of college I was telling my buddies that we were going to "dry that keg" "dry that beer" "dry those shots." I then read the lyrics one day and was heartbroken. ha

  • @Sorenconrad1 Still an awesome phrase, though!

  • what a song! i think ashbury park is a really underrated album

  • im not a huge fan of springsteen but I do love this song

  • All things considered, Springsteen is pretty negative. The odd part is that so much people derive inspiration from his toxic emotions.

  • "i gotta bottle of rose so let's try it" I didn't realize they were making Tequila Rose back then.

  • 1st 5 or six albums are deffinatley his best. at least up until born in the usa in 84. that album is too much pop in it

  • the boss at his best

  • The best song.

  • Check out the Live in Barcelona version of this song.

    Easilly the best version!

  • I used to play this song on the gitbox many moons ago. And now I will search for my old Martin.

  • Good song, but I still prefer Manfred Mann's Earth Band's version.

  • One of my favorite songs.. great feel, smooth and soft, tender yet cool... back when people actually made good music awesome!

  • Tasty. This is from back when I enjoyed Springsteen. Those first 3-4 records had soul.

  • he still and will always have soul everything he writes is awesome.

  • This will get me flamed I know...but I found a large portion of "Born in the USA" to be utter tripe. And his anti-war stuff sounds condescending and contrived. Give me Tunnel of Love - then "Nebraska" and everything previous..

  • I agree. "Nebraska" was better than "Born in the USA" and his first albums were the BEST.

  • I don't think I've heard much off of Tunnel of Love, but the song by the same name kind of makes me nauseaous... sounds like 80s garbage.

  • Now that my friend is the truth!

  • @martianshoes agreed. After that i don't listen to too much springsteen but songs like these are perfect.

  • @martianshoes I concur, actually never really enjoyed anything but Greetings from Asbury Park

  • Does anyone from Pt Pleasant or Lakewood know where greasy lake or the dark side of rt 88 is?

  • It's Wild Irish Rose, known as Rose. Wine. Cheap wine. Very cheap wine. :)

  • loooooove it makes me feel indescriable, i wanna put a scene my movie that i made up just for this song

  • Did Van Morrison do a version of this song?

  • Manfred Mann's Earth Band did a cover in the mid-70's.

  • are u sure it was this song? cuz i know manfred mann covered blinded by the light and it was a big hit

  • Manfred Mann also covered "Spirit In The Night" & the video is posted here on YouTube, if you'd like to see/ hear it.

  • no it was springsteins song and manfred man covered it.

  • they did not. bruce did. his only #1

  • Yeah I read that on wikipedia. Both are so much better by Bruce.

  • Yeah, what dshaw504 said - it was Springsteen's song off his first album, Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ. Manfred Mann took it to #1 with (what I consider to be) an inferior version.

  • springsteen wrote blinded by the light. mannfred manns earth band covered it and took it dangerously close to disco. believe me i cringed everytime they played it...right before Boston....and after Kansas...

  • blinded by the light...disco?...u dont know what u r talking about,, Mannfred Mann covered great,,..go jump in Greasy lake and cool off .

  • yeah Mannfred,ELO and a few others were pretty synth-heavy in ways UNlike Floyd and Yes who kept plenty of guitar in the mix. And the Mann didn't even get around to Greasy Lake or Janie or Crazy Davy!!! I DO know what I'm talking about since I was around when it was all overplayed on WLPL and WKTK and the debut of the dreaded V103 with the new Cheez Wiz brand of music...thank god it died off.And if I hear one more person sing "wrapped up like a douche" I will choke them.

  • LoL its as bad as '..warm smell of policeman, rising up through the night..'

  • bottle of rose. It's a type of wine. Rock on.

  • Four Roses, dude - it's whiskey/

  • it' s bourbon, man - not whiskey

  • great song.one of my favorites from his along with born to run

  • the boss

  • Manfred mann's "blinded by the Light" was better than Bruce's but "Spirits" belongs to the Boss - Manfred Mann's version is faggotified.

  • not true both of bruces versions blow manfred man away.... you are clearly the fag

  • yea man lahaim...and sholom.....its wine

  • he really captures that essence of being young and in love with this song.. those where the times

  • This version blows Manfred Mann's version out of the water. Someone please tell them to stop robbing Springsteen songs.

  • isn't it "bottle of woe"? i love this version, bruce's voice is great for it. he makes the part about janey (in the chorus) sound like its in paranthesis because his voice winds down real soft and then crescendos at the next line.

  • BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE.

  • springsteen > mann, period.

  • Heh, I just happen to like the Manfred Version a bit more.. but Springsteen is pretty chill too.

It just depends on the mood I'm trying to set, both songs have there own interpretation I suppose..

  • youre an idiot. then dont listen to this and this one is the REAL song sorry buddy the other one is shitty.

  • either way, only Springsteen could write something so awesome. every other version is just a cover.

  • awesome song. Bruce shows yet again that he is a genius in the art of writing music;

  • Well first, if u wanna call us retards, spell it right. Second, Mannfred mann ruined the song. It was supposed to be laid back swing beat. It made the song as good as it is.

  • uhhhhhhh i said retred for a reason you wrong know it all retred

  • -_- dude, dont even try to recover. you acting like a drunk retard, or at least a drunk, which is very possible, you wouldn't be the first drunk guy on the internet. have a glass of water, put the pain killers next to your bed for the morning, and sleep it off dude. and Bruce wrote this song, Manfred Mans earth band redid it. im going to assume your drunk so you dont end up sounding like a retard again by replying to this, so just go with it.

  • classic!

  • this was the first song i ever heard love this song!

  • hmm this is my first time hearing this i just assumed it was a manfred man song i had no idea it was a cover i like them both but i think i like this 1 better

  • What are you talking about! i love Bruce's voice! the song wouldn't be the same without his voice.

  • i cant believe you actually have the ability to say that. ridicules. your obviously a fan of the hypnotic, smoothed over, shiny versions of this kind of music, not the rough, rugged, and pure versions. quite frankly, i like the smoothed over ones, but i cant listen to them over and over again. i can listen to Bruce over and over again though. its just so much more....mineral.

  • I'll take you all out to where the gypsy angels go..like spirits in the night. Oh man, this was one of my theme songs back in the day!! Definately my favorite Springsteen song!

  • I love the lyrics in this song too. Good drinking music!

  • My absolute best Bruce song... Love it!!

  • This is awesome in the liveversion, saw it in gothenburg in Sweden :D
