Man you are AWESOME!!! You break down this complex art form into easy to understand (and do) tutorials. Dude, I bow to you! Keep em coming! I am a brand new DJ just starting out with no experience whatsoever. You have turned me into a pretty decent DJ already with just a few of your tutorials. I can't wait to take it to the next level. Thank You DJ ANGELO!!!!
hi, great vid...im using a djm 600 and it has 3 settings for the fader.. i have it on the setting you would use for transforming but it dont cut off like the phono-line switch which i use..whats the best mixer with the best cut off fader setting in your opinion??? thanx
i have been practicing off of your tutorials and they have helped me quite a bit.. I wanted to ask, which sounds can we use to scratch with the transformer? I am a DJ using serato so i dont have a bunch of records with those sounds... can you lead me in some sort of direction here? and i am also using Ortofon Pro S needles, should i switch to Shure M447's?
does it matter if your right or left handed? I'm right handed and on record control (baby scratches ) i find it easier to use my right, but if i switch the deck placement, i control the cross fader better(with my right hand) at the cost of record control with my left, does it matter or is it all practice? P.S. your tutorials are AWSOME!
Your tutorials are the dogs man! Just wanted to ask how long it took you to get decent speed in your left hand for transforming etc? I too am right handed, but had to switch to using my left hand on the vinyl as I was just not getting anywhere with my weaker (left hand) on the fader. This means I'm now having to re-learn all the record control on my left hand, but i'm finding that much easier than trying to gain speed on the fader with my left hand.
@gattogabriele123 Shure M44-7. 3 grams of weight should do the trick, you must ensure that you balance the tone arm correctly at 0 grams first, to do this, keep adjusting the weight until the tone arm floats above the record, the adjust the weight ring (not the weight itself) to 0. You can then turn the weight to 3.
For the people having problems with the transformer scratch.
Orginally, I found it easier to do the transformer scratch just by, kind of forgetting about the right hand at first and letting the sound play, just focussing on the cutting with the left hand...
Then eventually, (slowly) bringing in the right hand to further cut the scratch. Hope this helps...
Hi Angelo, just wanted to say how good your Scatch tutorials are. You really are a good teacher. I've been mixing house, hardcore, etc for years but never got my head around scratching. Your lessons have been excellent! You really should put these on DVD, etc and start charging. I took a similar internet course on playing the piano and your teaching techniques are as good as those I learnt in the piano. Thank you. Love Q-Bert and Drumming and DJ kentaro 2002 DMC! Keep rocking bro! Peace!
DJAngelo your tutorials are the best I've found on youtube so far... so easy to understand! Really well explained and the camera angle helps a lot too. Thanks heaps... really appreciate it!!
Hey man, just sending out my appreciation! I've watched all your tutorials so far and I'm still going! Lot's of respect to your style and also telling people to stay true to their style of playing.
P.S. Would you mind mixing up some electro house tunes? Just for fun :)
where do you find vinyl with just mobb deep instrumentals like that? oh ya and when transforming you use that specific sound. does transforming use all different sounds and samples other than that one?
i LOOOOOOVE transforming, prolly my favorite scratch to do, experiment dj's out there the transformer scratches have huge grey area's you can play with and do what feels and sounds good to you, just like angelo said i need to post some clips now dammit lol
hey i just picked up spinnin records like 2 months ago i primarily just make beats but id like to get real good at dj'ing one of the things ive been dyin to figure out is in the dj quick song 8ball at the end he's scratching the second to last track (ahh yeah) on superseal 1 hella crazy i think its a trasformer style but idk if you could make a vid that'd be dope
a track ages ago had a line that was "aaahhh its so freshhh" in a weird alien way. it then became the typical scratch sound and can be found (as stated at he beginning) in pretty much every scratch record.
dj angelo use that type of vinyl where you scratch and where can I get it .......... order online or something so I'm from mexico and I do not get many things here
I started on Records ,but I use Serato and hands down (meaning) if you really want to be a good scratch DJ then learn how to use your scratch moves on REAL RECORDS NOT TIME CODED RECORDS LIKE SERATO EXT... that have a function for anti-skip.
learn how to scratch on a warped record or any record, if so you will be amongst the best !! I guaranteed you.
1.) you will learn how to have better control on the record and develop a cleaner style. once you master it then the rest is Cake!!! (SERATO)
yes it does! you it wears out your needle much quicker than normal. And yes it does hurt your records, eventually the point which as been scratched alot will sound distorted and fuzzy.
- i recomend buying "skipless" battle records (check out dj qbert's seal volumes) and buy a decent stylus, the more high end ones don't need to be replaced as often.
im looking to start doing this but i am on a VERY limited budget and was curious if these are worth the money. im looking at one Stanton T.62 Direct Drive Analog Turntable and a Numark DM950 8" 2 Channel Battle DJ Mixer.
T. 62 are okay for beginners, I have a pair! They are direct drive, which means they're better than cheap-o belt-driven turntables, but the torque is no where near as good as other turntables like numark ttx, or tech 12s... but they're great for the price!! To compensate for the relatively low-torque, get some nice slip mats (butter rugs). GET NEW NEEDLES! Shure M44-7! The one's that come with are GARBAGE. Budget mixer ($100-200) Vestax PMC-05 Pro II or American Audio QD5.. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
hey man. really getting into the tutorials now and finally my scratching is starting to sound reasonable! just wondering, is there any particular style of hip hop which is best to scratch to? ive been experimenting with old school stuff like rakim and gangstarr but iv been trying out wu tang and del the funky homosapien with results that are not as good. is this just my technique or the style???
As a scratch DJ, you are a musician and should "compliment" the music you scratch along to. It's good to practice using different beats as this will teach you how to adapt your style. Of course, some types of music may be better suited to the sound of scratching than others, but it's always the DJ's job to select the music...
i Cant Agree more with you- Being a Fidget Jacking House DJ myself, ur style of music doesnt determine your Physical ability to scratch Good- its your creativity and your Rythym you Control on the music wether it be stabs, Drops, Flares or Crabs- its just a simple matter of Co Ordinating between the music, and the scratch tools your Desire- there are some INSANE Hardstyle Turntabalists out there- as well as some SICK SICK house Turntabalists- my Sa hero- Roger D Lux- Tech house DJ- insane !!!!
I noticed that some people do it with the right hand on the record and the left one n the crossfader, but most of them do it with the left hand on the record and right hand on the crossfader, is that because some people are left-handed and others are right-handed or either way is ok? isnt it easier for right-handed people doing the crab movement with the left hand fingers?
It's personal preference really. I'm right handed and prefer to control the record with my right hand but a lot of turntablists I know prefer to control the crossfader with their right hand. Either way, its a big learning curve to achieve coordination between both of your hands. My advice is to do whatever comes naturally...
Dead prez beat wit ur tansformers so freshh! ur doing a great job angelo....Thnx for postint up these videos man...now ppl can learn witout having to take classes...much love Peace!
i havent watched your tutorials in a while and i havent had much time to scratch lately, but now that im settled into school its good to get back into this and i want to thank you for making it easy to dive right back into. Best tutorials on the net and an excellent DJ for people to try to be like. DJ Angelo is the man
good to see someone actually taking the time to break it down in an understandable and digestible format. nice one. 99% of the other videos out there are garbage.
DDDAAAAAAYYYYYUUUUMMMMM!!!! Dj Angelo that last part where you put everything to work so we can see and hear how it functions man....one word......EPIC!!!!
the best the best the best the BEST SCRATCH TUTORIAL I HAVE EVER EVER EVER EVER EVERRRRRRRR SEEN!!! WHY HASN'T ANY OTHER VID ON YOUTUBE COME REMOTELY CLOSE???
Dj Angelo, you are da man, Ive been looking for this type of vids for the longest time, no one teaches like you do man. Make them DVDs like that other guy said, ill buy some for sure. One things though, im having trouble finding some scratch sounds how do I get them, I have serato and dont feel like buying vinyl, I need to down load it from somewhere. Thanks
if on one table you have ya beat and on the other one the vinyl your gonna mix, how much louder should the one your gionna mix? like a little bit or around the same
thank you so much for doing the different patterns and the diff. ways they can be performed. i have been looking for videos that show more patterns or rhythms . cuz i have learned the scratches but am stuck repeating the same patterns. please do more vids showing patterns . thank u
man ur the best ....but i need to know which is better the vinyl turntable or the cdj's like the cdj-400....and how can i put any track into the vinyl
man i swear ur the best i always wach ur videos...................but i need some informations from u first how can i put any track i want in the vinyl
very nice man. I've seen every tutorial video on youtube and this one stands out. Excellent explanation of the transformer when moving the record. If you wanted to take it a step further you could explain the hamster style becuase most of these kids trip when its reversed. GOOD STUFF!
Angelo.... Fantastic Tutorials. Have you got any advice for building speed in your mixer hand? I'm right handed and find it difficult to get speed on the fader with my left hand for transforming etc, I have no problems using my right hand on the cross fader, but I have better record control with my right hand and would like to get my left hand up to speed on the fader. I can scratch on both sides, but find faster techniques easier with my right hand on the cross fader.
Being right-handed, I have exactly the same problems. My left hand is certainly not as fast on the crossfader as I'd like it be but I've found the best way to build speed is do the technique over and over again, starting at a comfortable speed and gradually increasing it so that is always challenges you. Your wrists and hands may ache to start with but any muscle will become stronger if it is pushed. And with strength, comes speed. Like any exercise, don't forget to allow time to rest.
Hey Angelo i'm actually thinking about buying to shure white label stylus. And by the description it brings almost the same ideal performance as the ortofon. what do you suggest?????
really nice tutorials... i like to think i can scratch a bit but its always good to practice but these are the clearest guides i have come across.... where were your vids 6 years ago lol...
Angelo, I'm having some problems with my turns and i do believe that this happens to all of us turntablelists. I have to clean my needles almost every 5 minutes, it's exhausting. I have a big bash this saturday and i can't imagine pausing a playing song to clean up my needles, any advices?????
It sounds to me that your records need to be cleaned. Over time, dust and dirt gets trapped in the grooves and when you play these records, the dirt builds up on your needles. This is unfortunately a characteristic of playing vinyl so you should try and keep your records clean by using a suitable fluid and cloth. Briansredd has done a video on how to clean vinyl so search for this. Otherwise, there are many vinyl record cleaning products on the market.
Thx alot Angelo. By the way i use a virtualdj combination with ttx numarks (not the same felling as an LP but it does its shares). I'll make sure to response it to yours so that i could get some feedback from you.
I've just started playing on my decks again (after years of Hard Dance) and thought I'd give scratching a go. Your tutorials are clear, concise and the pacing of each one is like a logical progression from the last. Awesome mate. To big thumbs up and keep'em coming
5***** ahh i bin w8n long 4 your nxt vid this iz sick still. im using cdj 1000s so this scratch iz kinda hard transforming has always bin a hard 1 4 me wen u coverin chirps bro??
Hey good tutorial as always. Long time Dj, No time Scratch Dj.. lol. I actually started Djing like most because of the coolness of scratching. I never got a chance to pursue it as much as I really wanted to, because it wasn't prudent in making money in my line of Djing. I really wanted to learn how to transition hip hop songs with scratching. If you have any tutorials of that I would love to see them. Thanks Ck the Dj
Transforming can be done with transformer switches, but the crossfader is much more versatile for scratching, particularly for more advanced techniques like the Crab, which can't be performed on transformer switches.

what kind of needle do you use and how many grams do you put on your needle to have a good stability?

very nice man.

I can scratch on both sides, but find faster techniques easier with my right hand on the cross fader.
djwelly 2 years ago

Angelo, I'm having some problems with my turns and i do believe that this happens to all of us turntablelists. I have to clean my needles almost every 5 minutes, it's exhausting. I have a big bash this saturday and i can't imagine pausing a playing song to clean up my needles, any advices?????
8299120664 2 years ago

I recommend learning all scratches starting with the cross fader open. Otherwise you will make excessive clicks in combos later on.

Thanks Ck the Dj

wouldn't that be alot easier with transform switches?
very professional edited tutorials btw
the ending was pretty ill also
sainifabulous 2 years ago
Transforming can be done with transformer switches, but the crossfader is much more versatile for scratching, particularly for more advanced techniques like the Crab, which can't be performed on transformer switches.
