Keep in mind we entered WW2 with one of the smallest overall armed forces in the world and left WW2 with the second or third largest in the world. This is compared to countries with 10 times the population! We also did it with volunteers. No conscription and no draft to dodge from!!!
My bad, should've been more elaborate. NATO has joint AWACS, and Canadians fly on them, but I don't think any of them really serve Canada. Answers my Q but I think Canada could use some of their own, not NATO ones. 80 fighters is not much for the world's 2nd biggest state and Canadian based AWACS could really come in handy.
I don't see it coming down to luck, no matter what we did we would never be able to muster as many troops as the US or USSR at the height of the cold war. Besides, we were supposed to be protected under your ballistic missile shield!
But on a different note: how is Canada going to defend itself with 80 Hornets? Those DHCs are excellent and lovely, but those 80 Hornets seems to be just money wasted. In peace they are of little use; in war, they are of little effect!
People think that Canada has no army, but yet, we have the worlds best trained infantry, snipers, some of the top pilots, worlds strongest more advanced tank, and as well as good reliable equiptment, other countrys dont have
Ya well you can only keep 21st century technology in the 80's for so long. There is a reason why every nation fears the Hornet. Even the Russians fear the Hornet and they have aircraft that are far more advanced than anything we have here in Canada.
Actually I have a lot of respect for the Hornet but the Hornets the Canadian Air Force have in their fleet, the CF-18A Hornet, in my opinion can really use a new radar, new computing system, one of those link systems for joint attacks, and so forth. An additional comment is that in my opinion the Hornet is still the best multi-role fighter airplane in the world, one switch and you're in air-air mode and another switch you're back to air-ground. ^^
Yes, i agree. they need to upgrade the systems to accomodate todays pilot, and make it so that they can be somewhat more versatile in their attack role. I wouldn't mind seeing them make one that was more adapted to land based ops as well. Originally, the Hornet was designed to be strictly a carrier based aircraft, and pilot really have to fly it right down to the ground.
Either way, no matter what anyone says, we can't change the fact that the Hornet, in any configuration, is one of the most feared combat aircraft in the world.
one of my friends is a CF-18 pilot in CAF, coolest guy I know

I just realized... you guys don't even have AWACS. The airlift is ok, but no AWACS! What do you guys use in their place?
MingGuoLi 2 years ago
AWACS are NATO planes. Canadians fly on them.
ndvfdff33 2 years ago
AWACS is not NATO. The US doesn't share their E-3s, and the Brits and French have their own also.
Also, they are based in Germany and would rarely be in Canada. It answers my question but I don't think it is adequate for Canada itself.
MingGuoLi 2 years ago
Actually there are NATO AWAC's and Canadians do fly on them I can assure you because I happen to know Canadian Forces members who flew on them.
Search NATO AWACS

Do anything NATO really serve anyone?? LOL
The only Patrolling Aircraft we have is the CP-140 Aurora.

Ouch, no Arrows, no AWACS, you guys are lucky the Soviets never Beared into North America.
MingGuoLi 2 years ago
They've came in before and we intercepted them with the F-18's.

Don't get me started- I think our military should be at least double the size considering our land mass
Ralroost 2 years ago
yea i know, like what is it we have 35,000 land troops and were looking for another 8000, i think we should look for at least another 25,000

A/B model is just to differentate between one man and two man versions. Their really at minimum the C/D standard of the F/A-18.
