One of my favorite Guitarist. He appears in Richard Marx album and a high school bandmate of Steve Lukather. A prolific session musician in the 80's and 90's
@CircleCityEric it's hammer on/pull offs with left hand and lightly running your flesh down the strings with the right hand. Don't take your right hand off, just glide it down. Try it with left hand frets 5,3,0,5,3,0 etc... Works best on the bass strings.
@GuitarSlinger2112 Wow, thanks! That's boggled my mind first since I heard a track by this band I played with (members of anyway) in Indianapolis called Rok Hollywood - then the Janet Jackson #1 "Black Cat." Nice to know how it's done.
@samdan20 pull offs like this work easy with a pick slide... he's just using his nail as the hard slider point and hammering/pulling off and producing the harmonics...
Steve Lukather and Scott Henderson both think Michael is at the top of the mountain!...There are a couple of new guys on the block and their names are Tristan Klein and Daniele Gottardo!!!...Search Daniele`s video titled "Cardiology" here on youtube and try doing a google search for Tristans myspace sight and listen to the track "Not Dead Yet' and that track has some of the best feel guitar on the planet!!!
What steve and scott meant is that michael landau is one of the so amazingly rare one shot guitarist of the world.
PLayed over 15,000 albums becuase when you pay your studio bill it costs your house, and with michael, you pay his flight ticket, tells him what you wnat, and in one shot, your record is done. cheaper than playing yourself. Sounds "cheating" but if you play yurelf live, you don't loose your pride :D
damn, wish the vid had the whole jam on it!!!- there's a clip from 4-4-08 ,berlin, that has a more complete version......... but shit, michael was just hittin' his groove when vid ran out........same tune, each with different ideas.....mike is a BAAD dude ! ! ! !
you just hammer on/pull of and run either your pick or right hand up the strings along the neck at the same time, automatically alternating between muted sounds and overtones. Usually works best on the deeper strings but it all depends on the guitar and overall sound. Obviously distortion is needed for full effect, although it can be done without for a different feel.
Ever heard of an English player called Ollie Halsall .. another true original .. sadly no more with us .. totally unique .. never listened to guitarists for the same reason .
incredible guitar player, i never heard something like this, maybe jeff beck but they play some kind of different, who knows some others guitar players with this style?
Buzz has a new album just out ( in Japan so far ) with Brandon Fields guesting . Its absolutely wonderful .. Buzz is as stunning as ever .. its a pure treat . Pls tell all your music loving friends to go out and get it . Buzz deserves our support .. his talent is unique and he is too oft overlooked .
absolutely! i've seen him a couple of times here in Chicago. He's awesome. He said in an interview that spend a year without listening to any other guitarists just to find his voice. HE's brilliant!
where henderson would go off in scatty bepop lines, landau stays a little more 'riff' based. one can tell where he ends a thought, breathes, and starts afresh. god, what am i talking? SUCH FLOW!!!!
My last comment was supposed to be a reply to a comment made three pages ago.. anyway, the part that has me bewildered is that weird little harmonic/hammer/trill thing he whips out at 2.38. Anyone got any clues?
It's an old EVH trick. Do anything similar to what he does with the left hand (it actually doesn't have to be with open strings, but it's easier) while your right hand presses lightly on the string (with the same touch you would use for an open-string harmonic with you left hand). Try the side of your thumb that faces the guitar. As you hammer/pull, you'll create artificial harmonics. Changing the position of your right hand (watch his) produces different harmonics. Hope that helps.
Thanks dude, it all makes sense. Mike's apparent (but irrelevant) pick position had me bamboozled. I guess he had to dangle it somewhere.. of course, the rest of the song's a piece of cake..hmm..
Yep, I here Holdsworth also, when he runs feestyle its more in place for me than Holdsworth, because of the high energy choice of his notes , but niether are predictable, his tone is felt well, I love this cats music.
Wow!Really great stuff. Some of the comments about this(not all of them)make me embarrassed to be a guitar player. All this stuff about the best thumb and fingers in the world and the best player alive today is such shit. Why would someone feel the need to have a best anything? Can't people just listen and love it?This kind of talk makes me forget why I love music and guitar playing so much.Dan
I'm a huge Luke fan also and I'm seeing Verheyen next Sunday... but Landau has something very special in his playing... don't know what it is but I love it...
wow cool shit. and loud! a strat with no pick and some whammy may sound a bit beckish but this is nice. and he's only using the bridge humbucker, like holdsworth did all over the 1st IOU album. yeah yeah yeah
I saw this video yesterday and I couldn't get over that overdrive sound he has there, man the tone is good, great video love how up close it is. thank you for making this avalible to all.
