  • A German scientist once said:

''The main reason why the world warms up isen't only because of the human activaty on earth.

The biggest cause is that this age is like an ice age but then more like an heat age.''

That sounds more belevable to me.

And if the only reason would be human activity they'd better start doing something in America and Asia, man look at L.A. lots of useless electricity being used, and SUV's being drived (not only in L.A. offcoure, just for example)

  • To read climate science straight from the mouths of scientists, visit the RealClimate page. Just google "real climate" and you'll find it easily.

  • I will be entering the political arena. Trying to learn the ropes from watching the game. I say we work alongside on this issue? Do you think you may be interested in such a campaign?

  • Its interesting you say that. I'm a supporter of Sen Obama. Theres a real lack of compromise in D.C right now. I do think a campaign should be run on issues instead of fear and rhetoric. I just hope Sen Obama choses not to run on global warming fears and insteads concentrates on integrity and fact.

  • I completely agree...we should create a bipartisan platform and help move the country in the right direction.

  • Speedster has made a great observation. Erratic weather patterns are a natural part of our planet. If you doubt this look up the mini Ice Age. Its the reason our Continental Army had trouble crossing the Delaware. Temps on the East Coast were way lower than normal. Must have been all the cars they drove I guess...

  • Correct, and erratic weather patterns also ended the Ice Age. Similar weather also melted the glaciers over most of the US making NYC a livable location...I don't hear any of the 13 million residents there complaining about that glacier missing....

  • TylerTCF, you are very well informed. What areas have you studied to make your determinations? I would like to discuss with you offline your thoughts on environmental political issues.

  • Well, good sir, I have studied not only meteorology and oceanography, but also wave particles and remote sensing, which taught the effects of various particles in the atmosphere. Did you know that water vapor is the biggest greenhouse gas? I find it ironic that we're moving to hybrid cars that emit water vapor byproducts, and we're hoping to cool the Earth. I would love to discuss with you offline.

  • Good to hear. I do health risk assessment for industrial work centers and have studied alternative fuels and their impacts as well as radon, engine byproducts, water contamination, and controls for contaminants. Are you looking to enter the political arena? Do you support Sen. Obama?

  • I think that Obama is very smart, but I do not agree with his Global Warming point of view. I think we should wait on a real answer from Science before we make a decision that will impact every American. Furthermore, I do not agree with his idea of taxing CO2 use, especially since it has nothing to do with climate change. While I'm not a Democrat, he is the best candidate from the left. What do you believe?

  • Yes it is clear that you're no scientist, because what scientists have said is that global warming is part of a trend that will create erratic and extreme weather patterns. Pattern like the ones you are experienced in Atlanta. - yet more proof of global warming.

  • Actually that's not what scientists are saying, it's what politicians are saying. Please read the truth...Goto Google and type in "OISM Petition". On that page you will find a real Peer Reviewed Paper, signed by actual scientists (PhDs). People who actually know Meteorology and Oceanography.

  • I support TylerTCF's opinion. You can look in scientific journals, find the lastest and greatest many years ago and see stuff that turned out to be dead wrong. If you can't think for yourself, then you have issues. Those who read journals and take everything as law are in no position to innovate and come up with solutions to problems - on a scientific and social level. I studied the processes involved an am able to formulate a hypothesis - Scientific Method anyone?

  • "Oh my god!!! Our driving cars changed Mars and Jupiter?" HELL NO. Quit being morons...global warming is due to the fact that we don't know crap about the sun or how it interfaces with our planet, or any other planet for that matter.

  • Based solely on variations occuring on the sun, we could see at most about a tenth of current warming. In fact, luminance records and pan evaporation rates over the last 50 years suggest that the earth has actually dimmed substantially (~20%) over that time as a result of aerosols, which has partially offset the effect of greenhouse gases; however, the dimming trend has leveled off in recent years.

For more, please see Roderick and Farquhar's article in Science (November 2002).

  • We have emitted less CO2 in the entirety of civilization that was released when Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the early '90s.Also, I might point out that the national average temperature has barely changed over the last 50 years, and if you look at it, it's colder than before

  • On Mt. Pinatubo: That eruption released at most about a hundredth the CO2 that humans emit annually -- on the order of a hundred million tons versus about 25 billion tons.

  • So before you say, "let's look at the data since 1970", let's look at the last 100,000 years....trends are cooling. Sure we're warmer than after the Little Ice Age, but if you measure anything from its minimum point, then you're sure to show an upward change. Please ask some real scientists about global warming. Politicians have no clue about what real science says.

  • They are manipulating facts to drive a point in their platform. If you support environmental cleanup, then push that, don't create a fake problem, spin it in the media, and make everyone believe doomsday is on the way. Just say that you want a cleaner environment. Just support the real issues....I don't believe in global warming, but it would be nice to have a cleaner environment...see nothing about global warming...try that!

  • Saying that natural disasters are caused by humans is the same as saying that they are caused by sin - you have to take it on faith because there is NO EVIDENCE.

  • I'm an environmental engineer. Yes - gloabl warming is real, however, whats causing it is too hard to pinpoint. Its probably natural, but with only about 80-100 SOLID years of temperature observation, its difficult to make the jump that we are causing it, or making it worse. 80-100 years is nothing in the total history of the earth.

  • Please link to any recent article in a peer-reviewed journal supporting this point of view.

  • Why bother - its clear you've made your choice. I'm actually glad you believe what you do. I think we need to start cleaning up our mess. If unnatural global warming gives you your motivation - so be it. Try not to use fear though - I think the current administration has used enough of that to degrade our country...don't you agree?

  • The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

  • daslic: While I respect your passion for this and your sense of ideals and doing what you really believe, if you think that "science" is not strewn with ideologues or folks looking for govt grants, you are VERY naive. I don't care what statement you quote, it was written by one person with a point of view and endorsed (or maybe even coerced) by an editor with a point of view.

  • daslic is full of ca-ca.

"editorial" was the keyword there. The fact is that the content of any specific publication such as the one you cited can be controlled by the political will and ideology of the editor. 'nuff said.

You probably watch and swear by "Nova" on PBS too.

  • "Nature" is, with "Science", the most respected scientific journal in the world. The editors are themselves distinguished scientists, and absolutely every article in Nature, including editorials, is subject to the strictest scientific scrutiny. The fact that a statement like "that debate is over" is allowed to appear in any Nature article should be enough to show you that climate change is an accepted fact in the scientific community.

If climate change is ideology, then so is gravity.

  • Judging by the ca-ca reference, I think michigbuck is not interested in hearing any more of your case and will not be swayed (as I will not be).

Just because something appears in print, doesn't make it true and also remember, there are just as many legit scientists who do not endorse the "man is causing warming" scenario. They just aren't in the same "club" as the folks who put out your magazine.

  • jihadistsmustdie: Please, please do some research. Call the climatology department at the nearest major university; go to the library and find peer-reviewed journals (journals written and edited by scientists). I promise you'll learn a lot, including that the scientific debate is over.

Look, you clearly don't know very much about climatology -- yet. That's not a mortal sin, and it doesn't mean you're not smart. But you should educate yourself seriously before make sweeping claims.

  • It is amazing how these people throw out phrase like "the overwhelming majority of climatologists..." and have absolutely no data to back it up....just say it and it sounds authoritative. I think I have at least one pair of hunting boots older than "daslic".

  • Michigbuck, I urge you to pick up a random copy of any major peer-reviewed scientific journal. I'll give you a million bucks if you can find an article questioning the existence of global warming.

For example, in the latest issue of Nature, arguably the most prestigious journal in the world, you will find seven articles on climate change, and every single article takes the existence of anthropogenic climate change as a given. The phrase "that debate is over" even appears in an editorial.

  • daslic is full of ca-ca.

  • southexpress: There are a lot of scientists who DO NOT believe that "global warming" is anything to be in a panic about or even that man is a significant contributor to it compared to even cattle flatulence!

Science never operates on a "consensus" either. It's not a vote. There are theories and they are either proven or disproven. Al Gore's brand of "Global Warming" and this un-hinged hysteria can thus far not be proven.

  • Simply not true. The overwhelming majority of climatologists recognize that global warming is occurring, that the shift in climate is almost entirely caused by human activities, and that the damages will be huge. The only people saying there is not a consensus are not scientists themselves.

Sometimes it's nice to wait, but we know enough in this case to realize we must act *now* or face irreversible damage. Plugging our ears will not make the problem go away.

  • You are a mental and science featherweight penis head. The very definition of science is that is has been proven (not "consensus" or "the majority agree") and thus is not just theory anymore.

  • Chemically, how exactly does CO2 come from H2O, Mr. Carriets; the brilliant scientist...

  • Water vapor does not emit CO2, but vapor is a greenhouse gas just like CO2 is, and the oceans are obviously a primary source of vapor. Without that vapor, the earth would be too cold to be habitable. You should think of water vapor as part of the baseline temperature regulation of the earth that keeps our planet in a habitable "comfort zone", and then consider that massive CO2 emissions drive the temperature out of that zone.

  • I'm going to go run my Hummer in the driveway just for the heck of it!

  • co2 does not cause global warming, uh here is a new idea, it is the sun that causes the earth to heat.. Ocean water vapor is the number one co2 emitter.. Man emits about .054% of the total co2 in the atmosphere, even if we stopped what we are doing, there is nothing we can do to stop ocean water vapor which emits about 95% of the co2 in the atmosphere.. get a clue liberals.

  • 1) CO2 is like a blanket; it doesn't create heat, but it does keep it in.

    2) Your numbers about CO2 emissions are incorrect. The undisputed fact that concentrations have increased from 270 ppm to about 380 ppm since the Industrial Revolution says it all.

    3) On water vapor: The problem is not climate, it's climate change. Water vapor is constant from year to year and keeps the planet at a reasonable temperature. Adding more greenhouse gases makes things hotter than our societies can handle.

  • Obama all the way, we may have some some radical rights who disagree and want to make Obama the evil guy, but thats just them, bieng arrogant. I'm not saying Rudy is not good, just saying I'd go for Obama, He's better then Rudy and definitely better then Hillary.

  • The earth can heal itself, but we are polluting at a rate that far surpasses the natural limits.

  • I am voteing for Obama, he is an honest man who cares about this country and all it's people. (smile)

    Love & Peace

    Wiskawind

  • daslic: Is man also causing ice on Mars to melt and new heat phenomena on Jupiter with a new red spot? Hmmm...what could it be, what's in common? Could it be the sun and its increase in solar flares and radiation it's been emitting in the last few decades?

Libbies and environmental types always want us to feel guilty about something - either as Americans or humans. Stop your global whining!

I'm buying that Hummer and just letting it run in the drive, how's that?

  • Mars and Jupiter along with basically every other planet are unstable in the first place.

Also, what about scientists around the world that have come to to conclusion that global warming is real. Not liberals, not right-wing republicans, not environmentalists...

    Scientists from around the world!

Sources: IPCC, World Meteorological Organization and U.N. Environment Program.

  • I work in climatology, and I assure you there is no question. We have both short-term and long-term empirical evidence that match up with simple results of physics and chemistry. Humans are vastly increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, which leads to warming.

They say retrofitting costs about as much as buying new, and we'd basically be retrofitting the entire earth. Look at what even a small shift did in Darfur, and consider the billions we've lost to wildfires in recent years.

  • So people now support pollution, regardless of the debate on whether or not we're to blame on global warming? If so, what makes all that pollution HEALTHLY for Earth and why must we continue to pollute the same if not more in the future? What's so wrong with cleaning up if it means better water, better energy, better travel, and of course, better living conditions?

  • Radical leftest

  • Obama voted for every appropriation for the war since he got into the senate (go look it up). You guys are completely blind! He says he doesn't approve the war in Iraq yet he doesn't show any commitment to ending the war, he's a puppet. This is the same money that could go to our Veterans, the poor, education etc. He says all these great things to rise his approval rating but when it comes to its execution and voting he represents the opposite of his rhetoric.

  • yeah, so did everybody else.

  • he's better than bush.

  • He should have said Global Warming, not climiate change. Is he a Dem or Rep?

  • Dem, in between liberal and moderate.

  • it is because, in 20 years wehnglobal warming is over, it will get really cold really fast.

  • Earth becomes Mars? Very scary.

    Kyoto? YESH.

  • *Sigh* Of course nobody on earth disagrees that there is climate change. What we object to is that Humans play a very big role, if any at all. Watch "The Global Warming Swingdle" and you'll see what I'm talking about.

  • that TV show was immediately found to be warping graphs by nasa and posting it as scientific evidence and duping the scientists. As soon as the speakers found out they retracted their statements. AGW is real, the rise in sea level is overly exaggerated but you'd be naive to think that humans are not affecting global climate, even taking into account the solar cycles and milkankovitch cycles, which the side of the "global warming is a sham" has as their best arguement.

  • Obama 2008, 10 step process. 1. Register to vote 2. Learn about the candidates 3. conclude that Obama is not only the best candidate, but will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents ever 4. tell friends 5. blog 6. volunteer 7. donate 8. yard signs 9. bumper stickers 10. Vote Obama in primaries and Nov. 2008!

  • Foolish liberals, there are just as many scientist who think that man made global warming is a sham.. There is no consensus in Science, Science is Science. Man emits 5.4 % of the total CO2 in the atmosphere, even if we stop all that we are doing, we can't stop ocean water vapor, volcanos etc. People get a clue. This is just a political move by the liberals becasue they hate capitalism.

  • Foolish head-in-the-sand anti-science distractor- Thousands of studies from climate to bird migration to permafrost melting to ecosystem changes all have the same dire conclusions. Can anyone believe we can plow, pave, and deforest our planet, destroy ecosystems, and burn up millions of years of sequestered carbon without consequences? Apparently so. Oh, I forgot that because I actually care about our environment that I hate capitalism...thanks for the reminder.

  • Being dependent on one source of energy nearly destroyed the US in the early 1900's when coal miners boycotted their jobs. History repeats itself. Do you think Saudi Arabia cares about our economic intrests if their not involved?

Also, where did you get the number 5.4%? I also love capatalism, and I'm liberal.

  • I would want to know where you get this from. There is not a single scientific paper published in the last 20 years, which doubts that climate change is man-made. wake up! science is not joking!

  • I hope you're being sarcastic. I'd hate to think that people this retarded actually exist. So just because you hate Gore, you are saying it's ok to pollute? LOL get a clue.

  • Had you listened more carefully, you would have known that Obama was speaking of utilizing our advanced technologies to counter global warming and simultaneously exploit this advancement by marketing the CO2 carbon emission levels.

  • Let alone the fact that the IPCC announced that they are 100% certain that global warming exists and that they are 90% certain that it is caused by humans. We have the ability to progress forward into a time of efficiency, happiness, independence, and opportunity. Quit relying on the old fashion dependance on oil and non-environmental industrial methods and embrace the future: it's 2007, wake up.

  • I was at this forum meeting in Council Bluffs. He impressed the hell out of me and the other 2,100 that were in attendance. He talked mostly about domestic issues and how he would try to solve them, very detailed about every question.

    Obama/Richardson in 2008.

  • I'm skeptical about every political candidate... but Obama already looks like the one to vote for.

  • Tell Obama, he could mention Germany as a good example for this. Since the Renewable Energy Act a few years ago, nearly 200000 jobs were created, scientific research centers were founded and farmers are beginning to earn money with energy. This could convince people.

  • we will have to pay to end the problem of climate change -- but it will be worth it for us and future generations. I am ready for the sacrifice. Go Obama!

  • Go Obama Go!

  • I can't wait for Obama to become president!
