If he prepared this segment rather than improvised it, then "Expert" Village needs better people. And better filming equipment, the video is kinda pants & the kit should really be mic'd up.

Recsently when I played in the music-class my teacher told me I wasn't playing the drums, I was beating them... I know exactily what he means by that, but it's hard to obtain the ability to play with different strokes, to play harder or softer, and so on.

I wan't to expand my ability to play good beats that aren't just a line of hard hits on the kit. I'm doing pretty well, but I could use some advice. My cymbals aren't the best, it's some kind of crappy-made pearl-cymbals.

not too bad, tho i would like to share my opinion here. i think you get more versatility playing 13" hats and not those strictly rock sounding 14". he only scratched the surface of all the sounds that you can get with the high hats. eg - add all the sounds you can make just using your foot only.

What did you win? Matched grip is a weaker form of drumming, most real classical and jazz drummers blow matched grip rock drummers out of the f'in water. It's a fact, you just don't understand cause you probably listen to Blink182. har.

They are really good! I only have an 'intermediate' kit (Mapex QR series), but generally they are awesome. Mapex snares are very nice and prominent. though it depends on what heads you have as well. I have Remo heads, which are probably the best ones IMO.
