Phonetic literacy is comprised of characters which have no meaning. ABCED -minded was McLuhan's prefered Joycean pun which illustrates the lack of meaning in letters. English is strictly a language of metaphor, lacking the threat of any trap which might subdue the word into universals in syntax. He broke from classical intellectualism because of this fact and became acoustically general in his search for meaning.
When he says TV has no visual space and that TV uses the eye as an ear, is because the visuals are delivered in controlled packets, whereas visual space is controlled by ones own directives, such as shifting the eyes or moving the head. So except for the scaling, I'm not sure what the difference is between TV and movies.
