The reason why staying behind the ball is not understood is because batters are only told to do so & are not explained in detail how to do so, and is the reason why many other aspects of the game are not understood, coaches spend very little time on actual game type play, when a ball is put into play every defensive player has a place to go, watch a game, you will not see these movements being executed for the most part with college, high school & yout players.
