  • @OreckBoy1: It's not just you. Every time I watch it, I'm rather disappointed(Williams' is about my all-time favorite). It's like either they were short on time with the names and had to sacrifice someone's extra 2 seconds or they didn't want people whom were born yesterday to know that he composed it. And to do that to someone who's created most of the greatest pieces of all time...

  • Isn't it amazing that the opening credits here still don't beat the ones from 1978.

  • Best parts of this score were all John Williams and Williams' themes. Shame.

  • @Edbrad

Check out the in depth soundtrack review on the 'Filmtracks' website. They make the case for awarding it five stars and those guys are notoriously hard to please.

  • Is it me or does John Williams' name come out rather blurry and a little too fast???

  • You will travel far, my little Kal-El

Though we will never leave you

Even in the face of our death.

You will make my strength your own,

See my life, through your eyes,

As your life shall be seen through mine.

    The son becomes the father,

    and father becomes the son

  • Bryan Singer recently said he made this movie for women and it failed because they went to go see The Devil Wears Prada.

    Fucking shmuck

  • @TehQuestion75

Not sure I buy that as the main reason though. I think he made it because he's a Christian and wanted us to cum all over Jesus for two and a half hours. Admittedly, I was quite moved by the religious imagery in the film, but then I find it much easier to do so when no one's telling me or entire classrooms of small children that a man can actually fly.

  • @TheConciseStatement I saw nothing Religious about Superman Returns. I don't supose you know that The Creators of Superman were Jewish? So if there where anything religious about the film it certainly wouldn't be Christian.

  • @TheConciseStatement wow, prejudice much?

  • @NevadaWrangler

    Wouldn't that be "Prejudiced much?"?

Anyway, in the words of Bill Maher, "I'm not prejudging. I'm judging." To me that seems completely appropriate for a narrative that ends in fire and brimstone and, crucially, *lots of judging*. XD

  • Where is Jon peters now? i'm sure he's the guilty one for this picture!!!

  • @careycoombs

The film he was developing with (forcing upon) Kevin Smith sounded mentally ill.

  • @TractorBoy881..Christopher Reeve was superman.

  • I have read that the new Superman movie will NOT be using the John Williams Score..not sure I like that.

  • @billbot60

Didn't know that. I don't even like the idea of ditching Brandon Routh. Whatever problems the film had, he wasn't to blame for them. The same rather merciless culling of the lead is happening in the Hulk franchise too, with Ed Norton being replaced with, I think, Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo should be fine but I quite liked Ed Norton's mild mannered portrayal and the chemistry with Liv Tyler. One thing's for sure though - they've got to make Lois Lane humorous again - it's a vital element.

  • @billbot60 Thats because it is a reboot of the series. Its pissing me off. They're also making a Spiderman reboot which REALLY pisses me off. They dumped Toby and are using Andrew Garfield. AND they completely screwed up his suit. He doesn't even wear a mask anymore......ehh, whatever.

  • @TractorBoy881

You forgot 4 - The Quest For Peace. (I understand if you've erased it from your memory.)

  • look they need to bring back Brandon Routh simply it would make sense because of the whole infinite earths, but have a modern superman who people can relate to instead of trying to be like Mr.Reeves

  • @ballashotcalla07

I liked him. Had no problem with him at all. It was a Reeves impersonation but a pretty good one. He is *not* one of the issues with this film - they're all down to run time, lack of action, a lack of real vibrancy in Metropolis, a Lois that needs the acerbic wit of Margot Kidder, and ensuring the film isn't taken over with that cold, pervasive, lonely feeling of doom and gloom. And I hope they don't dump Routh like a sack of potatoes, as per Marvel's hissy fit with Ed Norton.

  • 200 million dollar budeget film and the special effects in this opening looks like something from a video game.

They got the music right though

  • @navylaks2 they were recreating the magnificent opening title of superman 1 and 2.

  • the one thing Bryan Singer got right- irreplaceable

  • this is an ok movie but the opening is epic

  • The producers were smart enough to keep the old music score.

It would have been a damn shame, if they changed it.

  • super intto fabuloso

  • No offense to Kate Bosworth but I felt she was miscast as Lois Lane. Hard imagining anyone but Margot Kidder as Lois Lane.

  • I think that was only half the problem though. Lane needs to be charming and she can only do that through more humorous dialogue.

Indeed while I stand by the film as a partial success, the whole thing needed to be less sombre and lonely and a bit lighter - not that it's a dark film by any means, just a bit more fun.

  • True, that's the only problem I have with the movie.

  • The casting of Ms. Bosworth? Or the tone of the film?

  • Only Kate Bosworth.

  • Yeah, I think it's a bit harsh to say - why did she screw up the film? The character as written on the page, is as serious and burdened and disillusioned as that, so she did what Singer asked adequately, I thought.

Had it been written with a bit more spirit and in the tradition of Kidder, I think they might have appropriately cast someone who does that kind of more rapid comedy, and sort of lights up the screen.

Right now an alternate suggestion escapes me though. Who would you cast?

  • To be honest, I don't know. Sorry.

  • Robin Tunney-who reminds me of Ms Kidder-if you watch her on The Mentalist, has that quick wit and kinda worldly, jaded outlook

  • Ah, the best part of the movie.

  • You should have a chat with Droogie128, if you haven't already. I'm sure you'd find a lot to talk about. with this film.

  • Reeves is Superman............forever.

  • No doubt about it

  • I remember being in the theater to see this movie and when that opening theme started playing and the blue "Warner Bros. Presents" started to come up and that famous music started playing the entire theater just started hooting and hollering and cheering! one of our heroes was back...we all felt young again.....we all were smiling ....the world was a wonderous place again! And as the music got louder and stronger the audience just started "singing" along with the tune....It was so cool!

  • This is the best part of the movie lol.

  • I think the VFX supervisor in charge of this sequence missed a great opportunity here. In the first film, Jor-El states that the journey from Krypton to Earth involves passing through six galaxies with 'their own individual laws of time and space'. The opening sequence could have consisted of the voyage through these galaxies, each one more bizarre than the last, showing things that only exist in theoretical cosmology. It could have been the most amazing opening sequence ever put on film.

  • @UncleFeedle Also the most distracting one for people who aren't that well-versed in astrophysics :P

  • Good movie I was suprised but Reeve was Superman although I would not mind seeing another with Routh

  • they so used 3ds max for the cgi animation and aftereffects for the titles

  • How do you know they used 3Ds Max for the cgi animation???? These effects could have easily been produced using any number of softwares, Lightwave 3D, Maya 3D. If I took a guess I would have gone with Maya being used over Max.

  • This was way better than Superman 3 and 4 so i don't see why it gets such a bad rep. I thought it was pretty faithful maybe too much so.

  • no superman 3 was better than this

  • superman 3 was better? you go squish now! :D

  • Amazing total amazing. <3

  • Brilliant opening segment. Too bad the rest of the movie wasn't as good.

  • Only The main title theme is perfect, others are disapointing

  • i hope they keep the john williams theme in the reboot. without it, it wont be a superman movie.

  • Well the vast majority of the fans online really hate this film, and already disniss this as 'not a Superman film'. Funny because this was decent with a very nice emotional climax, and yet the film that made all the money, Spider-Man 3, was absolutely awful - just awful.

  • "Well the vast majority of the fans online really hate this film, and already disniss this as 'not a Superman film'. Funny because this was decent"

No idea where you got that from. When this movie came out, it rocked ratings everywhere at around 7-8 out of 10. The few who didn't like it are geeky idiots who live in their parents' basements. Everyone else loved it.

  • I wouldn't go by IMDb alone but at the time of writing, the rating is 6.7. I'd say that's below average, and that ≥7 means most liked it. Plus right now the selected user comment is "Choses to be sentimental instead of entertaining." (Though the fact they spelt 'chooses' wrong' sort of proves your point.)

I'd say $400 million is a bit disappointing, and a travesty given that Pirates made a billion. Other than LotR and Dark Knight, it now takes a lukewarm crowdpleaser to make insane money.

  • Well, I for one loved Spider-Man 3 just as much as the other two, and no one is going to make me change my mind. Besides, I think the part with Peter walking down the street is one of the most underrated scenes in any movie recently.

  • Hey, what's with the "-2" on my comment?! Don't I have a right to state an opinion?

  • Sure you do. I -1ed you ONCE - ONCE. Whoever else did also disagrees with you. They're just stating their opinion. I hasten add the obvious : if Spider-Man 3 is as good as you say, the rating will eventually turn positive.

  • Now, I don't want anyone putting negative ratings on this post, but STOP SAYING THAT SPIDER-MAN 3 IS AWFUL!!!

  • LOL. If the sentence had ended before your command to stop saying Spider-Man 3 is awful, I would have +1ed you. But given it's sheer awfulness, it's a -1 from me I'm afraid.

(Relax - the billion dollars it made should make you and everyone who made the film, feel slightly better.)

  • FYI, Most of the people I know saw it, sometimes with me, and I can tell you this: They loved it!

  • I never argued that no one liked it. Lots of people like bad movies. Rarely do the best films make the most money. Isn't Titanic still the number one grossing movie in the world? (Actually, that's unfair - Titanic isn't terrible, just massively over-hyped at the time.)

  • Those are some spectacular opening credits.

  • It really does divide people this film.

I openly admit I'm not attached to Superman : I don't really know the older films, I can't relate to its staunch 'Americaness' in the face of 'boo-shudder-the-bad-guy' Communism, and I grew up with that 90s TV semi-spoof version during childhood.

The film itself is overlong, and a bit too sullen and lonely to be any real fun. But I have to say, as an emphatic atheist, even I was moved by the imagery and his vulnerability at the end of the film.

    6/10
