  • My first concert- 1981! Fan fucking tabulous~ :)

  • REO always reminds me of my little sister who begged me to take her to see them live in 1981. R.I.P. Les

  • This is so relavent sadly again today....

  • this is for makmichigan

  • when i was in tenth grade,a girl sat next to me in art class.her name was Cherie Wright.she was a wonderful girl and we became good friends.she was all excited about the reo concert coming up the next day after the concert i couldn't wait to hear about it,but that day she wasn't there.we were told the next day she was found in an alley the next day, raped and murdered.I was devastated.37 years yesterday i listened to golden country and all those feelings came rushing back.this is for Cherie.

  • @59rmelton Sorry that happend. Not sure why things like that happen in our lives. You should try to put that to rest.It still is hurting you for you honestly cared for her.Peace.

  • B before B

  • haven't heard this in a coons age

  • wasn't a huge fan (i respected their songs, and longevity...just never got in to them for whatever reason) saw them live tonight.....i'm a fan..these guys kicked fucking ass...

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 They were good, weren't they? I just saw them on Sun., 9/25/11 at the LA County Fair, Pomona, CA. Excellent show!

  • @gogomountain i don't think "good" does it justice lol..i had no idea what to expect, like i said, i wasn't really into them...the fricking rocked it.. great show..

also i knew they had hits, but until then i never realized how many. i'm not sure how commercially successful this song is, but i loved it

  • @banklikefrankwhite1 They have a lot of ballads ("Heard it from a friend who . . .") that really aren't my cup of tea but I really love their stuff like "Golden Country," "Keep Pushin On," "Ridin the Storm Out," and especially "Roll With the Changes." You HAVE to see their performance of "Roll With the Changes" from the Midnight Special in 1978. It is on YouTube. Kevin really belted out the tune, and it was a total jam. Have fun!

  • This has got to be my fav REO song.......Our high school grad song was "Time for me to fly"

  • I have this CD. Just wish it was digitally remastered. It's still as awesome as it was 39 years ago. I remember when this came out back in my day.

  • the time has come we need to take OUR COUNTRY BACK from the worthless politicos that have run us into the ground stop the drug test discrimination and the abuse of the people that made this country great or just nuke washington dc

  • I had to buy the album 3 times. Literally wore out the first 2. Back in the day.

  • Funny how "Album Rock" radio picked up on this in the last 20 years! The LP was never even close to the Top 100 in album sales, but it seemingly grew "coattails" when REO finally did start gaining success in the early-80s, and dragged every previous album with it, particularly the ones with Kevin Cronin. I don't think that has ever happened before in the history of Rock!

  • an anyone come up with some good reo speedwagon songs fro my traditional Power Metal band ( andraste) to Cover?

    Gary's songs ONly here!

  • @MattHatter What needs to happen is the young musicians need to sit with the old timers and play and learn the ropes. That along with working good solid fundamentals is the only way you get quality playing.

  • not much has changed. We really need to do our patriotic duty. Get Involved.

Make Stand. The Blacks are still dying - just at their own hands. We are the richest country on the planet. The politics of peoples poorness needs to be stopped. Both parties are keeping people down. We have have been rip off by the very elite. Wake up and understand it is the wizard of oz. The elites have us focused on the political circus while they run behind the scenes.

  • @HobNobToledo how are we the richest country when we owe china trillions?

  • @HobNobToledo Exactly.....we must not listen to the wizard and pay serious attention to the men behind the curtains.......they are heartless capitalistic vampires that are sucking the very lifeblood from this nation.....

  • great song if you get chance check out 157 riverside ave. and they sold out to pop and left the rock behind

  • REO SPEEDWAGON was, is, and always will be AMAZING. They get better every year. Some previous comments are UNBELIEVABLE to me. I can understand why some might prefer Gary Richrath, being purists and all, but Kevin Cronin is a big part of REO; face it. Anyone who has something bad to say about him is NOT a true REO fan and doesn't deserve my time and effort into trying to put the rest of this nicely... anything else I would have to say would be deeply inappropriate so I will stop myself here. :)

  • I could not give a metric litre of stacked shit less the motive of this song. It's just a great tune.

  • A Classic- they made the band when Kevin Croning started singing lead and then screwed up by mainstreaming into the pop culture. All their stuff up to and through " You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish" was for the ages!!! They should have never moved into the 80"s; their 70's music is where it is at.

  • if anyone has Flash Tan Queen please email me

  • Tom Costello would really like this tune

  • i used to not like reo speedwagon that much, because i heard their 80s pop songs being played constantly on classic rock radio. but i take one listen to reo two and im a believer now

  • REO is one of the suckiest bands of the eighties, their 70's songs are way better, and as much as i dont like them, this is probably one of my top 50 songs ever.... it really kicks ass... and gary richwrath is a kick ass guitar player.... lost in a bullshit band, kinda like neal schon or JY from styx... to me these 3 bands epitomize what was wrong with rock in the early 80's...

  • @milesneedham Hey Man, I hear Ya about Schon. However, if you have never collected a lot of the journey cds, I suggest you do so. Journey is one of my favorites, but, like very few of the "hits" People and places on departure is a masterpiece. The Steve Augeri period cd, Arrival, is outstanding. You should check out some of the Neal solo cds. Beyond the thunder is an awesome one. Like Gary Richrath, Neal Schon is severely underrated.

  • @bluzcat007 absolutely, like i said earlier, reo has some great songs as does journey and styx but they went to shit, the first three journey albums are awesome, before steve perry, Styx Equinox, and styx II are classics, and golden country by reo is a hard rock classic..... The late 70's and early 80's sucked a lotta good bands down,... def leppard is one, too bad paul di'anno ever left maiden, remember aerosmith? look what the 80's and no drugs did to them!!

  • REO is one of the suckiest bands of the eighties, their 70's songs are way better, and as much as i dont like them, this is probably one of my top 50 songs ever.... it really kicks ass...

  • I Just love REO Speedwagon They ROCKS!!!!!!

  • Codroy17, to be successful you need someone to sing those songs. How would Golden Country sound if Gary sang it too? ...just sayin'

  • @MSUSpartanFootball To which I'd answer, I did listen to REO and went to their concerts when KC was not the lead vocal. I neither intentionally buy nor listen to REO with out GR. Not to say that Kevin isn't the best vocals REO has had but Gary Richrath IS REO for me.

  • My favorite REO song.

  • look they were nobodys then and nobody now thank god we have our generations hero.............JUSTIN BEIBER..AND THANK GOD FOR AUTOTUNE!

  • Everything is in place to make a great song here. Vocals, bass, drums, guitar, and those typical keyboards of the time. These are the vocals from Kevin Cronin I have always admired so much backed by the powerful guitar by Richrath and solid drumming by Gratzer. The other instruments are spot on as well, in my opinion. This one and Keep pushin' are masterpieces of that solid REO Speedwagon sound of the 70s.

  • WOW.. had almost forgotten this great great song!!! So good to hear it again, just LOVE this!!!!!

  • the first stereo i smoked was to this song the next was deep purple, lost 2 car stereos to the cult some songs u just cant turn up enough! rock on!

  • @JetsRockinDaddy I am assuming you are a fan of "The Stoned Age" if not, you must buy that flick...dont rent it, I dont think any blockbusters are open anymore....trust me dude, if You have really lost not 1, but 2, car stereos to the cult, it is the rock law that you OWN this movie.

  • good today as it was yester....mmmmm

  • original guitar gary and drummer allen best im biggest reo fan but gotta say replacements are doing great job

  • original guitar gart and drummer allen best im biggest reo fan but gotta say replacements are doing great job

  • The government is corrupt and filled with power hungry pigs spilling our blood for their bank. It wasn't right in 1972 and it isn't right in 2011.

There is no pride in patriotic castration, which we clearly demonstrate by doing nothing.

  • all reo is good Garys King

  • when REO was a rock n roll band NOT a pop band.

  • Why cant people around the world at least have basic needs met . its more important to go to the moon. yeah right.... THERE SHOULD BE PLENTY TO GO AROUND.

  • Just saw them last night and they sang this song. I love it REO speedwagon ROCKS!!!!!!

  • the backs are still turned sick guitar

  • the backs are still turned

  • your freaks are still dying.35yrs later?

  • Gary rocked....one of the best....very under rated....song smokes......

  • let,me,sleep,is,egoistisch,moe,anfgel,bay

  • this song is the best... reminds me of my dad... R.I.P daddy love you...

  • @1991shortybaby

    My condolences.

  • @1991shortybaby my favorite as well--i love a decade of rock n roll.

  • ive never been able to find tab for the solo and i guess it'll be a lifelong journey search to learn this solo cuz i cant learn songs by ear but richrath was probably one of the most underrated guitarists of all time in history lol

  • @UNWIND777 Gary still lives in his home town helping up comming groups. His son Eric started a group as well, I know this cause I went to school with Eric. grade school - high school. Eric is a great guitar player too. Its been some time sence the last time that Iv'e seen them & I hope they are doing well. Reo's early stuff is so remindive of home that no matter where I am in the world, the music reminds me where i'm from, I close my eyes & for a moment ,(IM HOME.)

  • R.E.O./T.W.O.

Best album they ever made IMO

  • Awesome song! This is classic Richrath stuff. He's one of the finest guitarist ever and this song brings out his best. REO used to rock back in the days but I guess they had to make monet and went pop in the 80's. It ruined them, in my opinion. Their You Get What You Play For is the best material they have ever put out. What an phenominal album!

  • definitely one of their greatest - before the 80s crap. a really great song

  • Why cant we make music like this anymore?

  • @RunnerDude92 The sentiments that came out of the hearts of THIS generation aren't the same as those of today. Kids nowadays can listen to classic rock and try to imitate it but you've got to have the foundation these musicians had in order for it to truly be. And we're never going to have that same foundation ever again.

  • Totally agree, if not Gary's finest.....certainly in top 5 (everyone has opinions plus these

early REO Albums contain SO MANY Great tunes) & that makes it hard for me to pick just one. l.o.l. I know Cronin has a "history" with them but Gary was/is REO to me (nothing whatsoever against rest of band, namely Bruce Hall, ect.,) & that's just my opinion....for what it's worth. Thanks for the Post.....appreciate it.

  • My fav REO song:)

  • A truth of yesterday and today, great song!

  • This song relates to what went on in America in the early 70s, and could be considered to be one of the last "protest" songs that were so popular back in the day.

Nevertheless--despite all the advancements in the sciences and technology, nothing has really changed. I lived through that era, and we are once again involved in war as we were then in Vietnam, and it may also be another unwinnable situation--at least this time no one is being drafted.

  • And Just for the record-REO is My all time Favorite band.

77 Grad. so they were all Up In The Wheel House in my prime time.

I'm just saying......LOL Ya gotta love Ralph Edison Olds

  • @PQXLR That would be Ransom E. Olds

  • heavy message, yesterday and today.

  • @Dv8ors Gary Wrote this song 39 YEARS AGO and It is very erie to say the least. The words dictate another story that is Happening TODAY and the last few years OR it could almost pass for Revelations.

USA you've embarrassed yourself, all of your people sould surely Be Fed.Your HAARP machine causes so much disaster & U don't care what comes after..Hatians & Africa are dying, but you have no concern. No Hidin from God's promise-the rainbow & when He returns,He must see your country BURN ..Mortgage peo

  • I LOVE REO SPEEDWAGON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WAS A MAID AT SHERATON WESTPORT PLAZA IN ST LOUIS AND HAVE PICS OF THEM ALSO KEY TO THEIR ROOMS GOT TO SEE THEM SLEEPING WOOT WOOT I SHOULD OF CRAWLED IN LOL

  • I saw REO back in 1971..1972 and 1976 (during the YOU GET WHAT YOU PLAY FOR tour)...that's when they were a REAL band....someone to take seriously...after they lost greg philbin.....they went down hill fast....every album was worse than the one before it

  • My favorite Reo song hands down.

  • i can rember 8 trackin this song. Rockin the way its supposed to be

  • Music the way it should be!!!

  • This whole record is awesome!

  • love this song.

  • Ride the wagon!

  • i saw them live in concert and Gary played this song with some wah pedal which made the song insanely bad ass.

  • it really does not matter to me who posted this song, bottom line is that it got posted and early r.e.o. had a great feel for what was going on in this country and they let everybody know how they felt. truly one of rock&rolls greatest assets. along with anti establishment man, to me they were ahead of there time!

  • BEST REO SONG!

  • never was much of an reo fan even though they were an almost local band for us here in mo. but this song is Great!

  • has anybody herd the lead mans sons band they suck

  • yeah ridin around in a 72 duster crankin this on the pioneer super tuner with the jenson coaxils and a little power booster, boy were we cool.wanted to hang out with my buddies and didnt want my girl to hang out anybody what a dumb fuck

  • @NonRider ...one of the heavier songs from that era ...pretty trippy as well

  • @NonRider i can rlate to everything you said even the brand names of the stereo and speakers except the girlfriend part.mygirlfriends were always one OF my friends and i wanted her(them) hanging out with us

  • Rock N F'n Roll Baby!

  • some pretty great stuff

  • by my 1st inspiration, gary

  • nice!

  • Richrath forever, man.

  • wow, great tune, will never see music like this ever again, we had it great back then, we were oh so lucky. Thanks Reo speedwagon for some great tunes that makes us feel just that, GREAT. x.o

  • Great song, great lyrics that still work after almost 40 years. That's what I call a true classic. Furthermore it's my all time Speedwagon favourite.

  • @Loner5705 yes it's a true classic.

  • ANYONE can bend this song ANY way to ALMOST ANY country. Haiti, Mexico, England come to mind. As long as you are THINKING while rocking, it's cool. Just steer clear of late 70's DISCO and it's all good!

  • I've been a fan of both Led Zeppelin and REO for a long time and I have to say the drums in this song don't sound typical Bonham at all. The vocals don't sound Plant at all. If anyone doing a long and fancy guitar solo in the middle is influenced by Page, beats me.

I would say it sounds like the REO of the 70s, sounds like Keep Pushin' still sounds later on, with powerful Gratzer, aggressive Richrath and the somewhat weird, edgy and crispy vocals Cronin used to have.

  • That's a step in the right direction Dave. The pompus attitude of the U.S.A is something you need to work on. Look at your own country to alleviate the issues at hand. Otherwise your country will fall.Button your lip, don't let the shield slip take a fresh look on your bullit proof past.

  • where the fuck are you from?

  • Maybe the U.S. should use THIS song for thier national theme song. Seems to be a good fit for the last 35 years at least.

  • way to insult the States hollypepper9, perhaps we should all look to Canada for a prime examplehow we should all behave...fuck you!

  • I'm from the U.S. and hollypepper is dead on. Don't be blind in your patriotism.

  • @davethecaveman

I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think she was really bashing the American people - but, rather, expressing her displeasure with the US government. I have no patience for those who bash the American people, but the government is a different matter. The Canadian government isn't perfect, either. As a citizen of your country (be it Canada, the US, or whatever), you can't just blindly defend your government in the name of "patriotism". That was how Nazi Germany came to be.

  • @bttf4444 great job illustrating the difference between bashing the people of a country for what their gov't does and the importance between the two ideas of the people and the gov't are one and the same.very well put

  • @davethecaveman If you think this video is "leftist-paranoia" than get paranoid because their is trouble bruin. I tried to give a link but YouTube won't let me. The media is controled by you know who. Llisten to our troops that are there. It's not about left or right. Watch your news station for a day and count how many times they even mention this frightening situation that we are in, While we are camping out at the local mall to get the latest IPod. Made by you know who...

  • @scott30771 IN YHour Letter& Take it on the run aren't pop songs

  • @hollypepper9 I like what u say and I from the USA...very wise. We go around invading here and there and do very little to help our own people.

  • when REO rocked, they sucked in the

80's with their love ballad shit

  • absolutely. i still get goose bumps when this song begins. richrath could kick ass on lead.

  • @danderson87 its called selling out

  • @dandeexxxx

I don't think all of their '80s singles sucked, but I agree that I like more of their stuff from the '70s. People shouldn't be so quick to dismiss REO Speedwagon without first giving this song a listen - and I said something very similar for Styx, with Suite Madame Blue.

  • @bttf4444 -well said, I never thought Styx as anything but occasionally corny and average rock however I was pretty suprised at how good Suite Madam Blue was and think its their best song.

"Golden Country" is without a doubt my favorite REO song, nothing at all like their later material which earned them a fan base of sappy teenage girls and the Journey crowd

  • @MightySaturn5 You must listen to some more journey and early styx and they were more progressine rock feel to there music.

  • @journeyvail ..yeah, when you think about the beginnings of multi tracking and progressive creativity its interesting how the same guy that took multitracking to the masses did so with a progressive song of his own creation -year-1947 -song-Lover -artist (all instruments)-Les Paul

  • Great song from REO in 1972. The song is a Protest song and anti-war comment, esample: Black Sabbath "War Pigs."

  • I don't hear any Zep in this, but I do wonder if Styx' Suite Madame Blue was a bit of a knockoff of this tune, a few years later.

  • My fav REO song!

  • You need to get your ears checked.

  • Yeah, I'm no diagnostician but it sounds like you have musical color-blindness or something of the sort.

  • @Codroy17 They Stariwayd to Heaven solo and this one are similar, just because he goes into this 3 note legatto thing. He has a point, but I don't think it is a copy, seeing as how billions of people use 3 note legatto.

  • @inflames2121 dude...no...just no....

  • @inflames2121 First of all, dumbass, this solo is much longer than Stairway's solo.

Second of all, Stairway's solo is grossly overrated.

Lastly, this solo is better than Stairway's.

  • @undertakerfreak1127 Just to butt in here, I don't think Stairway's solo is overrated at all. You want to talk about overrated guitar solos let's talk about "Hotel California" or "Free Bird." Yes it's played to death but it has a perfect build in it's intensity, perfect in it's pace and cuts off right where it's supposed to.

  • Awesome guitar solo. Definitely REO's best song ever!

  • Gary Richrath is a master wah wah guy!!..one of the best!!

  • political diatribe? thats what this song is

  • who cares - just a great song with great guitar work

  • you got it

  • the country was political and deeply mired in Asia when they did this.

  • @dandeexxxx and it still is..just a different part of Asia...the middle east

  • It's only rock and roll but I like it. Saw these guys around 1972 opening for Johnny Winter. Top notch indeed. And oh yeah, take your political diatribes elsewhere!

  • How about a bit of respect for the song . . .

Mayhap, sometimes it is good to simply

    listen?

  • wow timin770 - you fired up both brain cells for that zinger! now go beat off to rush limbaugh (again).

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring on the socialism!!! I want to see CEOs in jail!!!

  • If you put all the productive people in jail, who's going to pay for your government cheese?

  • The only thing CEOs are productive at is LINING THEIR OWN POCKETS!!!!!!!!! otherwise, they produce NOTHING but LAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!

  • Then, why don't you try to become a CEO? It would beat the hell out of making french fries

  • But I LIKE french fries.

Oh, excuse me, I mean FREEDOM fries.

  • It's sad how many ignorant people like timin770 there are.

  • i think they do this song better live

  • this song WAS REO for many years!

  • this is one of the best songs rock wise i may be younger but this song sums up america and the reality of whats going on still today.

  • you know your music, you fucking moron

  • We've got the same video and you have more views?? wtf.

  • Probably cause you put yours up a month ago and I put mine up over half a year ago. Besides I'm not putting this video up to get views, I want to show people this music cause it deserves to be heard and I don't care if it's heard through my video or yours.

  • @Codroy17 Well said

  • Great message..........and Gary wails as usual.

  • Very cool Song, all is brilliant, the organ, the guitar, drums..brilliant prog song from west coast heroes!

  • this is my fave REO song!....they rock...a friend of ours jammed w/ gary richrath several years ago...cool

  • this song has one of the best solos ive ever heard

  • To me this song is one of the greatest rock songs ever. Maybe because it's too early 70ish most people don't agree with me but I have always thought this about this song. I'm often sad that the song doesn't get the recognition it deserves. And because of that I am thankful to Codroy17 for posting this video, thank you man!

  • good to hear Gary still has it.. It just wasnt REO without the "R"..

  • AWSOME

  • I really like ..Gary Richrath he is pushing 60 years old now. And he is a GREAT guitar player.

  • I freaking aged 10 years listening to that solo. The awesomeness begins at 2:41

  • awesome solo! :)

  • Written by none other than the most BADASS guitarist ..Gary Richrath!!

  • you can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish

  • Yeah, You can tune a piano but you can't tune fish I always thought was a cool and clever name for an album.

  • Thanks for posting this! It's my favourite song by REO Speedwagon! :)

  • There is a European double of the first album and REO TWO.

  • An Epic Classic! :)

  • An Epic Sick as Hell Classic-Bar-fucking-none ;)

  • im only 24 but was raised on good music and Reo was one of the regulars in my house. Gary is one of my fav guitar players.

  • Thank you so much! It's nearly impossible to find the albums released pre Cronin take over.

  • Ummm...you are aware that this vocal IS Cronin...or, maybe not...Riding the Storm Out is Mike Murphy (album)...Kevin came back for REO (cow cover) and beyond... just to clarify...the live version of 'Storm' is Cronin...which is all you hear now-a-days...
