Wow! Even in 1980 people were dressing up to fly ... widebodies such as the L-1011 and A300 regularly flew into LaGuardia ... oh, and iconic airlines such as TWA and Eastern, still existed. If someone transported a person familiar with LGA into LGA, today, they'd think they were at some small, regional airport. What a shame what U.S. aviation has become. Thanks for the journey back into time! Great vid!
nice expressway approach to rw 31 at klga.it was always fun to watch those widebodies making a tight left turn over shea stadium then on to 31. now all we get are md 80s a 319s and crappy regional jets. havent seen a 767 come in in years the only one still maybe flying them in is delta......
People knew how to dressed when they board a plane back in the day but today people don't even dress classic anymore when getting on a plane, and sometimes you wonder if you are at a greyhound bus station.
Wow, there was wide body service between Charlotte and LGA. Charlotte -JFK would be less of a shock, but Charlotte-LGA, now that is a shock. What really something, is the fact that the plane looked almost full.
SDMullis, did you edit the video to give it a sepia-oldy effect or where videos really like that in 1980? also as i wasnt born at the time, could you tell me if you ever spotted a delta a300 since they took over eastern airlines?
It appears SDmullis shot this in 8mm or 16mm film, a video camera in 1980 was gigantic-size of a giant boombox - and would have cost a fortune back then. Delta did not take over Eastern, Delta did take Eastern's gate space at Atlanta, half of Concourse B and all of C. Eastern was folded into Texas Air Corp .. under it's dominant Continental Airlines brand (who got a lot of EA A300s), along with New York Air, People Express and the original Frontier Airlines.
oh, im sorry, i meant western airlines, and now i realize they did not actually have A300s since this is easter airlines and not western. Oh well, although im certain i saw a delta A310 or A300 once
True, it was Delra who acquired the late great, Western Airlines. And you DID see Delta A310s, ir's just that they came from Delta's acquisition of a large chunk of Pan Am's European network and Kennedy operations. PA had some 30÷ A310s and Delta for them all only to replace them with 767s.
This was filmed with a Bell&Howell Super 8mm movie camera. It used real rolls of film...you are too young to remember. I did not have to add sepia effects, etc. That is the way the movies looked back then. I do not think Delta took over Eastern. They got a few L-1011s when Eastern shut down but no A300s.
"Western Airlines" was whom Delta took over the SLC Hub after Delta merged with them back in the late 80's. "Eastern Airlines" had a Hub in Kansas City from i believe 1985-88 thats the farthest west they ever had a Hub. A-300 beauty of a plane! And seeing all those 1011's at LGA allways puts a smile on my face!
@ITSWIN55 Delta did not take over Eastern but they did get a number of ex-Eastern L1011's and B727-200's after EA went bankrupt and folded in January 1991.
Wow, EA used the A300 CLT-LGA. I find it amazing they did this especially in this day and age of the regional jet. Did the flight deaprt frtom the old terminal south of the NE-SW crosswind rwy? My first widebody flight was on an EA A300 ATL-SFO in July 1987. I was amazed by the big and wide cabin. It felt like I was in my living room. I remember the big window in the rear of the A300 near the L4 door and having to go through the very smoky Y cabin aft of the wings back when allow smoking.

Delta did not take over Eastern. Eastern went out on strike thanks to the stupid union. We did not get any A300s but a few L1011s

I was in 7th grade when you shot this. Brings back memories of my first EA A300 ride in '82.

This is the kind of video I could define: "poetry"! Do you like the blonde woman
at the beginning of the video guys? I'm sure if I was on that aircraft I would fall in love!

The A-300's can take off out of most of the same runways the 727's can operate out of.

yes, i confused eastern and western airlines, which was the actual airline they took over (which got them the SLC hub)

@SDMullis
Quite correct. Delta did not take over Eastern, the airline imploded on itself in 1991.
Delta (amongst others) picked over the company's assets after the shut down. They got several L-1011, 727, and I believe some DC-9's.
I believe the A-300 went on to fly with Continental if I'm not mistaken.
