Yes, that's what we've been trying to tell you: Under Reagan (as well as Bush) the regulators didn't regulate. The auditors and bank examiners weren't allowed to do their jobs by the political appointees. So the Banksters took crazy risks and we all paid the price. The 1983-87 recovery which is still touted by the Reagan mythmakers as support for their poorly conceived policies was just a typical rebound from a very bad recession. You should consider reading Paul Krugman's work on the subject.

S&L companies couldn't compete due to the 6% interest (give or take a few points) they were earning on the fixed loans. Prime rate i think hit 20% or so by 1981. This was killing the S&L's for obvious reasons. I'm stopping there for now. However, too much regulation of banks can be harmful leading to low growth rates and balance sheets with low equity deriving less flexibility to market fluctuations.

You have delusions of victimization and you're really weak at math. Reagan increased payroll taxes by 23% in 1983, not 2%, the largest tax increase in US history. The 1983-87 recovery, which is still touted by you Reagan felchers as some kinda big deal was a typical recovery from a brutal recession.

Like i said to people, prove me wrong because I guess the US Treasury Dept. had everything completely wrong and mistated historical tax rates increases. So the depreciation recapture, alternative minimum tax, and the MACRS had nothing to do with the S&L and real estate downfall in 87? Well I have a colleague in Manhattan who was one of the head guys at JPMorgan Chase dealing with the mortgages. He was referring to the CRA of 1977. And um, sorry, it was either 12.3% and meant to hit 3% difference or 13.3% and supposed to hit 2%. The 3 is next to the 2. A typo..my mistake. I mentioned the Treasury because thats where I got the payroll tax percentages from. Not from the typo in basic arithmetic. Regulation, could it be perhaps the regulators didn't regulate?
