bba is typically a result of fluctuating co2 levels, commonly due to diy co2 mixes. Many people will say that the only way to get rid of it is dosing flourish excell, or crazy lighting schedules, but I've come up with a different treatment. I figured that since co2 is an acid, and directly effects the ph of the aquarium, then maybe the bba loves the ph changes, so I dossed baking soda, 1 tsp / 10 gallons. Mixed it with aquarium water, the just dumped it in. bba dead in 1 day, gone 100% in a week

dustin, i think that sound of your HBFilter is not because its old. have you tried cleaning the motor? sometimes if its not in place it does that sound. especially upon starting the filter w/o water. try it and let me know if it worked. it happens to me allot so. =) thanks! oh and Happy Birthday Bro! 5 dislikes? lol y are you people even here? Anyway, I just got into the chemical side of keeping fish, still kinda new. I'm kinda confused when people say "Don't clean your filter, you need bacteria to grow on it." This is to promote Nitrite to Nitrate I understand this, but do I just NEVER clean the filter??? Or just don't overdo it to make it like new? I guess clean the big stuffs, quick rinse is the route I'm suppose to take. I have two tetra whispers btw, a 40i and 20i in a 40Gallon Breeder.

@RobinhooodGFX I clean it once a month. Don't make it clean clean, just take the sponge or whatever media you have and swish it in the tank water when you do a water change and place the media back.

@RobinhooodGFX no you don't need to, swish the media in the bucket of water you took out of your tank during the water change, that way the shit doesn't go back in your tank lol..is your goldfish okay? it's a cold water fish cories like it warmer, though i have seen people keep both tropical and cold water together

@PurpleSpades I have the tank around 72-73F. Just did a 50pwc and here's what I got: pH 7.2, Ammonia 0.50 ppm, Nitrite 0.25 ppm, and Nitrate 5.0 ppm. I have a handful of live plants in there as well with a sand substrate.

FYI -- pretty sure if your plants are pearling they are giving off oxygen. Mine will pearl after a water change but I've been told that is for different reasons. But one of my tanks isn't balanced at the moment so it shows what I know. ;-)
