For his age and the difficulties of this piece I would say Nick did very well. Congrats to him for taking a chance. A person never knows their potential if they don't and he did so brava to him.
If I were to give this performance a rating out of 5, I would probably give it a 2.3. You can see that he's trying desperately to change his timbre to fit both the mood of the piece as well as the sound of the musical. However, his voice is still a bit too weak to be playing this part. Nice effort though.
Holy shit. He sounds so different—so much more mature than in the Jonas Brothers. This is crazy good singing... definitely beyond what I was hearing before. Congrats, Nick!
for me, the only piece that he sang that can be considered good is this one, but on the other parts i would still say no. he can't reach those high notes without a lot of concentration. as can be seen in his face. his voice is not that powerful as compared to the other casts and can be barely heard in the piece one day more
My very favorite thing about his performance in this song is that he can make the audience feel his pain. I feel like that means more than having the strongest voice in the world. He sure is one talented young man <3
What moron thought it was a good idea to cast a nasally, pre-packaged hack like Nick Jonas in what basically amounts to a modern-day opera? He has no breath control, no charisma, no stage presence, and he can barely stay on pitch. Worst performance of this song, period. I've heard high school productions that do this role more justice.
Holy crap. I just gained a lot of respect torwards him. I had NO idea he was this amazing. No more pop for him. How bout broadway? This showcases his talent SO much more and better.
To all you Nick haters out there, give him a little credit! I mean he actually had the nerve to do this! (no offense to Justin bieber lovers) would you guys rather like to see Justin Bieber be Marius?!? Huh? Would you?! If you don't, start counting your blessings.
i cant believe he can sing like that, im sorry but i think those record companies r holding him back, he needs to do what he is dong right now, that is talent.
Check my cover out if you would please guys! Let me know what you think :) hope I did it justice! Sorry its a bit out of sink.. still... I hope its a good listen! :D
go nick go! I was never a fan of any Jonas brother until I saw the 25th anniversary concert on TV yesterday. I'm so impressed by Nick's version of Marius.
@frclough With the greatest of respects frclough, it doesn't sound as if you have been singing long enough to really know what you are talking about. I have been singing for 4 years now, and I think he really demonstrates great dynamism. He may be a little edgy on the acccent but his rhythm is perfect. unless your highness disagrees!?
@bethx5 The rhythm is not is not the main problem but it's hardly perfect. He cuts too many notes short. You just need to look at the score and compare it to what you hear in this performance. The mistakes (dodgy tuning, breaths in the middle of phrases, inconsistent accent) should be more than obvious. Any qualified singing teacher would be shocked to hear such beginner's mistakes in a professional concert performance. By the way, I've got a postgraduate degree in music and vocal studies.
@frclough I hate to sound condescending, but I know from personal experience that it is all very well to study the academics and the theory of music, but very very different to actually be involved in the practice of it.
Also, I think you simply cannot ignore that most people try to compare to Colm Wilkinson (who is generally considered the original). Huge difference in tone and style that you probably are not recognizing. Don't judge him on the tween persona he has created. judge on the performance.
@bethx5 You've mixed up Colm Wilkinson (Valjean) and Michael Ball (Marius). There is a difference between the academic study of music and singing. However, the score is the basis of any performance and if a singer lacks the technical skills and vocal stamina to follow the written instructions, he shouldn't have been cast (especially if there are 200 trained singers in the chorus who could do a better job). I'd never even heard of Jonas until I saw this concert, so I don't think I'm prejudiced.
@frclough Ok, fair enough, I can see your point. Just as there are many who blindly follow, there are equally as many people on youtube.com who criticize just to create an argument, but you seem to know what you are talking about? Out of interest, are you a music teacher?
@bethx5 Yes, I am. I always try to teach my students to 'blind test' different performances of the same work. I don't tell them who the performers are and they have to analyse the performances, compare them and maybe even identify the singer, instrumentalist, orchestra or conductor. That's a very useful exercise to practise your listening skills and it also helps you to approach music more objectively.
@frclough Really interesting. Thanks frclough. What would you say are the most common mistakes intermediates make, and what did you find were the most difficult transitions to make in your own singing?
I have been working on it for 4 years, and youtube can be quite useful, but it's always interesting to get different perspectives. Do you have your own e-singing channel u have a link to for teaching breathing, techniques etc etc?
@bethx5 The Gareth Gates version is slightly better but it has many shortcomings as well (very breathy sound, limited dynamic range, inappropriate accent, a tendency to overact). Over the last few years most Marius actors in London have been rather weak and perhaps too young. The best singers I've heard in live performances of this song are Hadley Fraser and Matt Cammelle. Yes, I'm a big Les Mis fan. I've seen it more than 40 times and I enjoy comparing different performances and productions.
I like Michael Ball's version BUT there is something special about this preformance...Breathtaking!!! because nick isnt traditionally trained in the theater he brings something new.. something more realistic and believable.. I LOVE this.. i cant believe he has gotten so much critisism for this song in particular.. he had some trouble with low notes but really? his friends "just died" again this just adds to the believability...
I adore this musical. It is definately one of my favorites. When I heard that Nick Jonas was going to be in it, I was hesitant and I didn't think it would go well. But after watching this video I have to say that he did a very very nice job and I am pleasantly surprised with his performance :)
He really is not terrible, though certainly not up to par to the ability I think we should expect from this musical. However, this performance is much better than other parts of this show (sometimes I literally cringed). It's quite obvious to me that he was cast to draw in a younger crowed to a seasoned musical.
I listened to this song without expecting much, and I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised. He sings the song very well, however, he lacks the passion that makes this song great. People have said that it is unfair to compare Nick Jonas to more seasoned performers like Michael Ball. I wholeheartedly agree! This leads to another question: Why was this young actor given such a demanding role, and on such an important occasion?

I am in NO WAY a fan of the Jonas Brothers, but damn he did good in this song!! Good acting and vocals. Anyone to deny him of that is being just ignorant and stupid. If he wasn't "Nick Jonas" and a legit "Broadway performer" you'd all be praising him. Taking his band and career in Disney out of the picture and just watching THIS performance you have to admit he did extremely well. Stop worrying about who's singing it, just enjoy the performance. Anyone who performs at all imo has my respect.
keeping in mind that all other Marius who have been given critical acclaim (think Michael Ball) were years older than they should have, Michael was 34 I think during his spectacular 10th Anniversary Performance and about twice the size and +17years of experience on little Nick here, he did a good job. For the 30th Anniversary should they ask him back he'll be spectacular because extra years will add to his depth. Good boy Jonas:)
This is no place for this voice. All of the other performers were stunning and they made his voice seem even weaker than it is. I would love to own the DVD of this performance but I can't stand Nick as Marius. Who thought it was a good idea to put him in this performance eh? Too bad.
This stage is not the place for a novice. This performance is lackluster, and the powers that be should NOT have given him this role. He is obviously not ready. The entire cast was light years better than Jonas. This is the only song in which he flexed a little, yet still it's weak compared to others.
Nick Jonas's voice just isn't strong enough for this role. I did a 2 year old type temper tantrum when I first heard him sing here. He just wasn't cutting it for me. HE NEEDS A STRONGER VOICE AND MORE VIBRATTO!!!
Kinda Makes you take a new look at Nick doesn't it? I mean the Jonas Brothers make me want to scratch my ears of, but man. I mean he's no Michael Ball, but this was amazing
He sounds like he's doing karaoke or the jr. high choir concert. No emotion. Just singing through it. Now, if he was barely 18, I shouldn't be so critical. The main thing is that he needs to act more. There is no character.
@elgozador I agree with you. I think he shocked everyone, vocally, because he never sung like this in Jonas Brothers, but he's still lacking the characteristics of Marius.
@Searian They asked him to do it. It's not like it's been his life long plan and he's poured every day of his life into just this. His a pop singer not a Broadway singer.
@ginapd123 He has, he started Nick Jonas and the administration and kept the jonas brothers too, but he's stopped Jonas Brothers now, he's Les Mis and Nick Jonas and the administration. Jonas Brothers have pretty much fallen apart because Kevin got married so Joe couldn't do it alone. :/ I'm not a Jonas Brother fan, so i'm not keeping up to date with them but last time i heard, thats the way it was. xx
@snowyangel97 No, Nick hasn't stopped the Jonas Brothers, and he hasn't started Les Mis full time. The Jonas Brothers are still a band, they went on tour last year. Nick's producind and writing with and for other artists at the moment. :)
@zashley43vaba He did, he still went on tour with them but he's apparently, as far as the fans and the media know, he's not wanting to get tied up in JB business again. Nick hasn't told fans or said in an interview that he's left the band but he's definatly staying clear for a while. And i actually think thats a good idea because when u see this performance ^^^^ u see a side of Nick that we don't see in Camp Rock, and we don't hear him like this in JB, so i like the idea of going solo. Hbu? :)
i think he nailed the song...but he cud barely hit the low notes...but this just shows what talent he has, he can sing pop songs and intense musical theatre
I'm not a fan of him, but he did okay. But I have to say, after watching/listening to Micheal Ball singing this, Nick doesnt compare. He didn't have the emotion. He doesnt have a bad voice though
It is undeniable that Nick does have talent! I mean, he is only 18 and he already has that amazing voice! I'm positive that with more practice he can grow up to be incredible(:
I really hate to admit this, but I got chills... I thoroughly dislike the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus... any of the Disney teeny-bopppers. But Nick actually did a decent job here... needs to work on the acting skills a little, but he's young, he's got time. Good on him.
i would just hate having to be him, dealing with all of this...thats his voice, he got cast, he did well. don't hate him because he's not michael ball.
Sorry all you Nick fans, but he really isn't a strong enough singer for a West End Role - let alone the epic role of Marius. Both me and my fiance were stunned when we watched the 25th Anniversary DVD and saw his weak, mediocre performance... especially considering it was the ANNIVERSARY show! I actually can't believe he was cast!
Well done to the rest of the cast though, especially Alfie Boe, Matt Lucas and Samantha Barks, also the amazing Lea Salonga as Fantine was fantastic!
i'm happy that at least one jonas brother is branching out. i still am not a fan of the jonas brothers, but i am gaining respect for nick and his talent
Michael Ball is and always be Marius for it was his to shape those who follow have to step up, I myself sat at the movies and watch this production it was wonderus to see Nick did wonderfuly but comparing him to Michael Ball is unfair for they both are wonderful and one has 25 years under his belt, think on this?
Personally I think if Nick Jonas had had more experience he would have been at the same level as the rest of the cast, but he isn't there quite yet. He has the potential but it was a little early. But who honestly cares? This was a fantastic production and I wouldn't change any part of it.
Nick was the weak link in this production. Dont know why he was chosen. No power in his voice and his completely missed the high points in this song. Very disappointing.
Not as bad as i thought it would be. I agree with people saying if he had more training he would be really good. Obviously he's not going to be as good as those in the broadway show but i mean for a Jonas Brother this was good.... why doesn't he sing more often in the group?
As someone who had no opinion about Nick Jonas before seeing this...he's not bad. But I think it's really unfair that someone like this guy, who is already famous, got the role over some lesser-known but much better singers. Les Miserables doesn't need the celeb factor...
@beautndabeast Yeh, and that's because most people who liked it were either stupid or die hard jonas brothers fans who would have never heard of this show until they found out he was in it
@DiamondzProductions Like I said to antother die hard Jonas Brothers fan who replied to my other comment with something similiar, I would be more than happy to, however I know that with my lower range I would not be able to play Marius, and Nick should have considered his acting and singing abilitlies before accepting this part
Nick Jonas was amazing at doing the 25th aniversry with his age as well takes guts to take this epsh after being in disney for years
Micheal ball was the first Marius and was alot older and had more professional training so stop hating at if you think nick's awful dont blooming watch this ! or listen!
I don't understand why you guys are saying "HE SHOULD STAY OUT OF BROADWAY AND GO BACK TO DISNEY." Really? Broadway is where he started. He played Gavroche when he was younger and wanted to play the role of Marius when he was of the right age. Sure, there are probably way more talented people than him, but he got the part and did his best. You can't turn back the clock and tell them to cast someone else. What's done is done. Deal with it.
@SoFreakingLegit For one playing Gavroche is nothing in comparison to playing the role of Marius. I understand he wanted to play the role when he was older, but he should have had some common sense and realised that he wasn't up to the standard that the role requires. His voice was horrible and he can't act to save his life!
@beautndabeast First of all I know I don't have the vocal range to play Marius, had I been in Nick's position I would have turned it down because if I played the role they would have to drop the part down and most die hard Les Mis fans would not be happy about that. Second I can guarantee that I would have been a million times better than he was in the acting portion of the part. Also I would have absolutely no problem performing in front of that many people if I had was part of the show
I don't like the jonas brothers. In fact I hate them. REALLY HATE THEM. But I don't hate this. This just show that he has promise in Broadway. X) -sigh- If only he would keep that maturity and continue to grow instead of going back.......
To be fair, this wasn't even half as disappointing as Vanessa Hudgens as Mimi in Rent. This Disney Star shows definite potential. She needs to never be cast in anything ever again.
People shut up.. He isn't micheal ball he is nick jonas. Yer its not his best, he only turned 18 few weeks befor him, give hi mcredit, he probs far better then most you, most you probs wouldnt be able to stand infrom of thousands people and sing that. Yer his breathing was odd but get over it it was good. Dont like it dont watch t simples. END OF x
Yes, not a strong enough voice and maybe no life experience for him to live through his eyes. Bit too card board like for me. But he is young, he should get more work experience if he is to make it in this business. Way too many better singers out there now adays. shame
I usually LOVE this boy, but I really don't think he was right for this part.. He needs to sort out his breathing, and range, maybe he would have been good for the next one they do, when he's older..
don't know what people have been talking about, while i dislike the jonas brothers he has a good voice for an 18/19 year old as Marius.. while not the best performance i have seen anyone do as marius give it a few more years and i'm sure his voice will be great and he will make a great marius.. but not bad :)
Not a fan of the Jonas brothers.. But I must say that NIck is quite good as Marius (ok no Michael Ball.. no one can beat him) but this is not at all bad!
@dempro95 you know he is miming though don't you? I love all the other parts because you can see how 15 years of performances has made the characters evolve....so how the fuck did michael ball evolve into this?
@dempro95 i dont think he has the pipes for this song. he doesnt have the low notes. They changed the key, raised it two full steps and he still struggled with the low parts.
Well, he's not as bad as I expected, but there's no emotion behind the voice. He's just singing and not emoting. It's just bland. He could be good with practice, and I wish that someone more experienced had been cast as Marius.
He was better than I was expecting him to be but still not amazing. I think that they should have given the part to someone else and let him play Marius after a few years of formal vocal training. His voice does have potential but it isn't quite at the level it needs to be to be on par with everyone else in this show.
@mnjmnjmnjmnjmnj He played the poor kid Gavroche on Broadway in 2003. Samantha Barks plays Eponine, a girl who loves Marius but Marius doesn't love back.
@BellaMusical but Cossette and eponine are supposed to be 16, and they don't cast 16 yr olds, they cast good singers.

I like the way he sings this song. I guess some people are not open to different versions. To bad. Very good.. .
HappyButterfly101 11 months ago
This is no place for this voice. All of the other performers were stunning and they made his voice seem even weaker than it is. I would love to own the DVD of this performance but I can't stand Nick as Marius. Who thought it was a good idea to put him in this performance eh? Too bad.
RuthAClark 11 months ago
Wow. Dear Nick, please never go back to Disney again. Sing pretty like this forever and I may become a fan(:
SingMariahSing 11 months ago 4
i think he should ALWAYS sing like this!!
chickady12 11 months ago
This stage is not the place for a novice. This performance is lackluster, and the powers that be should NOT have given him this role. He is obviously not ready. The entire cast was light years better than Jonas. This is the only song in which he flexed a little, yet still it's weak compared to others.
rellenoz 11 months ago
WAAAYYY better than his original singing
cupcakeclubmember 11 months ago
Nick Jonas's voice just isn't strong enough for this role. I did a 2 year old type temper tantrum when I first heard him sing here. He just wasn't cutting it for me. HE NEEDS A STRONGER VOICE AND MORE VIBRATTO!!!
howdy131 11 months ago
@howdy131 Good Lord, I turned my tv off! I SERIOUSLY want to write a letter of complaint to someone.

Kinda Makes you take a new look at Nick doesn't it? I mean the Jonas Brothers make me want to scratch my ears of, but man. I mean he's no Michael Ball, but this was amazing

where my friends will **sing** no more are the last lyrics... not meet...
mosherd14 1 year ago
He sounds like he's doing karaoke or the jr. high choir concert. No emotion. Just singing through it. Now, if he was barely 18, I shouldn't be so critical. The main thing is that he needs to act more. There is no character.
elgozador 1 year ago
@elgozador I agree with you. I think he shocked everyone, vocally, because he never sung like this in Jonas Brothers, but he's still lacking the characteristics of Marius.
snowyangel97 1 year ago
@RebelComedyClub you also have to remember he just turned 18 and his voice is still developing as a Broadway actor/singer.
prgrl10493 1 year ago
@prgrl10493 Then he shouldn't be doing this as a professional.
I know 16 year olds who are far better. :/
Searian 11 months ago
@Searian They asked him to do it. It's not like it's been his life long plan and he's poured every day of his life into just this. His a pop singer not a Broadway singer.
prgrl10493 11 months ago
@prgrl10493 'i know they did.
But they shouldn't ask someone so shitty.
Searian 11 months ago
HE SHOULD STOP THE JONAS BROTHERS SHIT AND DO THIS!!!!! HE IS SO AMAZING!!!!
ginapd123 1 year ago 3
@ginapd123 He has, he started Nick Jonas and the administration and kept the jonas brothers too, but he's stopped Jonas Brothers now, he's Les Mis and Nick Jonas and the administration. Jonas Brothers have pretty much fallen apart because Kevin got married so Joe couldn't do it alone. :/ I'm not a Jonas Brother fan, so i'm not keeping up to date with them but last time i heard, thats the way it was. xx
snowyangel97 1 year ago
@snowyangel97 No, Nick hasn't stopped the Jonas Brothers, and he hasn't started Les Mis full time. The Jonas Brothers are still a band, they went on tour last year. Nick's producind and writing with and for other artists at the moment. :)
zashley43vaba 11 months ago
@zashley43vaba He did, he still went on tour with them but he's apparently, as far as the fans and the media know, he's not wanting to get tied up in JB business again. Nick hasn't told fans or said in an interview that he's left the band but he's definatly staying clear for a while. And i actually think thats a good idea because when u see this performance ^^^^ u see a side of Nick that we don't see in Camp Rock, and we don't hear him like this in JB, so i like the idea of going solo. Hbu? :)
snowyangel97 11 months ago
i think he nailed the song...but he cud barely hit the low notes...but this just shows what talent he has, he can sing pop songs and intense musical theatre

wtf is with people saying that nick sucks?? "he doesn't have emotion" WOW ,really? the kid is about to cry as he sings this, he did frikkin amazing.
YESHUAISMERCIFUL 1 year ago 4
I'm not a fan of him, but he did okay. But I have to say, after watching/listening to Micheal Ball singing this, Nick doesnt compare. He didn't have the emotion. He doesnt have a bad voice though

I really hate to admit this, but I got chills... I thoroughly dislike the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus... any of the Disney teeny-bopppers. But Nick actually did a decent job here... needs to work on the acting skills a little, but he's young, he's got time. Good on him.

Michael Ball is and always be Marius for it was his to shape those who follow have to step up, I myself sat at the movies and watch this production it was wonderus to see Nick did wonderfuly but comparing him to Michael Ball is unfair for they both are wonderful and one has 25 years under his belt, think on this?
phycooutcast 1 year ago 23
I love Nick, but he just doesn't sing it with enough emotion. Nor, does he 'own the song'. If he were to do these two things he'd be amazing.

Personally I think if Nick Jonas had had more experience he would have been at the same level as the rest of the cast, but he isn't there quite yet. He has the potential but it was a little early. But who honestly cares? This was a fantastic production and I wouldn't change any part of it.
NikandNat928 1 year ago 2
Nick was the weak link in this production. Dont know why he was chosen. No power in his voice and his completely missed the high points in this song. Very disappointing.
98csmi 1 year ago
Not as bad as i thought it would be. I agree with people saying if he had more training he would be really good. Obviously he's not going to be as good as those in the broadway show but i mean for a Jonas Brother this was good.... why doesn't he sing more often in the group?
MissMillsonxx 1 year ago
As someone who had no opinion about Nick Jonas before seeing this...he's not bad. But I think it's really unfair that someone like this guy, who is already famous, got the role over some lesser-known but much better singers. Les Miserables doesn't need the celeb factor...

@DiamondzProductions Like I said to antother die hard Jonas Brothers fan who replied to my other comment with something similiar, I would be more than happy to, however I know that with my lower range I would not be able to play Marius, and Nick should have considered his acting and singing abilitlies before accepting this part
Jetboy012 1 year ago

SoFreakingLegit 1 year ago 31
@SoFreakingLegit For one playing Gavroche is nothing in comparison to playing the role of Marius. I understand he wanted to play the role when he was older, but he should have had some common sense and realised that he wasn't up to the standard that the role requires. His voice was horrible and he can't act to save his life!
Jetboy012 1 year ago
@Jetboy012 yh you get up on that stage infront of all those people and sing empty chairs and empty tables
beautndabeast 1 year ago
@beautndabeast First of all I know I don't have the vocal range to play Marius, had I been in Nick's position I would have turned it down because if I played the role they would have to drop the part down and most die hard Les Mis fans would not be happy about that. Second I can guarantee that I would have been a million times better than he was in the acting portion of the part. Also I would have absolutely no problem performing in front of that many people if I had was part of the show
Jetboy012 1 year ago
@Jetboy012
I wouldnt say his voice was horrible as such... But there are a few bits where it's like "Awww.... Nick.... No. :/"
But as for his acting that is crap... he's constantly like -.-
xD

I don't like the jonas brothers. In fact I hate them. REALLY HATE THEM. But I don't hate this. This just show that he has promise in Broadway. X) -sigh- If only he would keep that maturity and continue to grow instead of going back.......

Yes, not a strong enough voice and maybe no life experience for him to live through his eyes. Bit too card board like for me. But he is young, he should get more work experience if he is to make it in this business. Way too many better singers out there now adays. shame

@dempro95 what about the other 8 songs he butchered.

@dempro95 i dont think he has the pipes for this song. he doesnt have the low notes. They changed the key, raised it two full steps and he still struggled with the low parts.

clark1017 1 year ago
Well, he's not as bad as I expected, but there's no emotion behind the voice. He's just singing and not emoting. It's just bland. He could be good with practice, and I wish that someone more experienced had been cast as Marius.
But I hate Maruis anyway.

He was better than I was expecting him to be but still not amazing. I think that they should have given the part to someone else and let him play Marius after a few years of formal vocal training.
