But there definitely was the expression "old Hong Kong" applied to certain people, who may have been there since the 20's. I think the Keswicks (Jardine Matheson Ltd.) would go back to the 1840's; also families from the other British trading "hongs." Hope this helps. In those days HK , Britain's last major Asian colony, was the best run place in Asia IMO - I went to many.

Also by 1812, Ireland's flag had been incorporated with the English Union Flag. So, the modern looking Union Flag would have been in use as far back as 1802, I would think.

umm things haven't changed much,,, the proportion of the population has always been dominated by the Chinese with very small number of other ethinicity including the british.. the only difference is that the english now need a visa to go to hongkong, but didin't need one before 1997

Hay why did you put the St. Patricks Cross in the Grand Union flag? Not to complan it dose look better that way thow when it was flowen by the first president of the U.S. it only had the flags of Scottland and England at the time of the war of 1812 now i know at the time that the flag flew stars where unheard of on a flag so we put the Union Jack where we now have a blue filed of 50 stars

@Robert46514 I think the Grand Union flag was first flown in America, in 1775. But by 1812, the United States flag bore 15 stars upon the blue field. Also by 1812, Ireland's flag had been incorporated with the English Union Flag. So, the modern looking Union Flag would have been in use as far back as 1802, I would think.

I fondly remember the German Empire, but the treaty of Versailles and the way WW1 ended ruined the chance of having any legacy.

In Africa, though, I'd be scared to death to have stayed behind when colonial rule ended. Was it common for whites to stay behind in these African countries after independence? Or did they leave with the colonial government?

I know that in some cases, the whites had been in these African colonies for generations, but, that wouldn't have been enough to keep me there. Especially not if it meant living in poverty, amid all that violence. I'd gladly move to Canada or Australia..

It is such a frustration for Europeans who long for LAW, ORDER and technological advances in INFRASTRUCTURE to be stuck in an once rapidly growing country-South Africa. I am an American. As an American, I remember my relatives who served His Majesty in WW1 and WW2. This is why I have chosen to Major in British Imperial History in University
As a Jew, I also think about Britain as the only safe haven for Jews throughout much of European history. Also how Britain is one of the few countries in the world where Jews are equal citizens, and have served Her Majesty's forces since the creation of the Empire. We will continue to do so.

We could have possible won more lad had we commited more troops but the west indies and india were considered more important and so they were sent there.

Does Germany still have a Kaiser? I liked the Kaiser and old Kings of Britian/Europe. They lost all their power though, especially after ww1.
