@KCfakesmiles the song was written by an Englishman and an Irishman. The original was performed by UK artists. I don't see how America comes in to play here.

Ugh, I can't believe Glee is doing this song. It's an embarrassment. Sung by people who have never visited Africa about a religion that half of Africa doesn't celebrate, further propagating the belief that the only thing Africa is good for is to make us feel bad enough to give them money to save them from themselves. Of course there won't be snow in Africa - there's no snow in Florida, either, should we send them money?
@PharaohNefertiti You do know that they didn't write this song. Others wrote it to raise money for Africa. And it's not all about the fact that there won't be snow. It's about how Africa won't get to celebrate the happy times like most of us, about how we take this holiday for granted and so many of us don't stop to think about the less fortunate.
@JohnsonBubleLover Yes, I know Glee didn't write it, I'm just disappointed they're singing it. And I know it's not about that one lyric, but that one lyric represents every other misrepresentation in the song. But the "only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears," for example, is just propaganda promoting the stereotype that Africa is a wasteland, which it isn't - it's so much more than that, and its people deserve better than to be treated like victims all the time.
@PharaohNefertiti I love you so much. I almost don't want to buy this album because this song is on it. The fact that they sang this makes me sick. that line "no rain or rivers flow" oh yes, except that LARGEST ONE IN THE WORLD! the song is so patronizing and condescending. It's basically saying "feel bad, because oh my god, isn't America so goddamn fucking awesome compared to them?"
That's actually not what they're saying at all. Did you listen to the lyrics? I just don't see how anyone could interpret this song as something condescending and patronizing. It's telling us to look outside of ourselves and be of service to others. I think you should listen to it again with different ears. More positive ears.
@Tracy3339 Actually, when I first heard the song, I liked it. When I listened to it more closely, I realized how insulting it is to Ethiopians, and Africans in general. If that weren't enough, I find the lyrics sappy to the point of being inauthentic. It's not that I'm against songs that promote awareness or helping to improve the world - in fact, I loved Glee's rendition of "Man in the Mirror," because it doesn't stereotype an entire continent, and the lyrics feel more sincere.
Well you clearly have no heart. at the time the original band aid released this, 3/4s of Ethiopa were dying. This song helped them so much. this song has nothing to do about snow, you fucktard.
@Charlieisvlogable - You clearly don't know your facts. Not only does this song propagate the stereotype that Africa is a desolate wasteland whose people need to be rescued, but the money raised by the song and by the Live Aid concert actually went to the Ethiopian government, which was part of the reason for the famine in the first place. As Cracked puts it, "It's like buying Christmas presents for the poor kids down the street, only to see the abusive dad sell them for drug money."
@PharaohNefertiti I just want to point out that the money was meant for the people. Yes sadly the government got most of it Also you said know your facts, you should review yours This this crisis wasn't new, but it was worsened by a drought here's for your only water flowing... About the religion part, it's not about the religious part of Christmas, but more about the spirit that comes with it the Holidays the gifts everything They wanted to remind people that the spirit of Xmas is about giving
@louloulove2008 Though it was for Ethiopia specifically, it talks about Africa as a continent, thus generalizing Ethiopia's plight, which doesn't help its reputation as a barren country filled with starving citizens. Africa is more than that, and so much more diverse than just Ethiopia, and this song doesn't help its cause in that respect. I know the intentions were good, and I don't blame the artists for what happened - but that doesn't change what actually happened.
@PharaohNefertiti I meant "barren continent," not country. Also, I know that Christian has become more of a cultural holiday about love and peace, but that's part of Western culture, not African culture. In many places in Africa, Christmas isn't a big holiday at all. I've spent Christmas in Egypt and Tunisia, and though there are people there who celebrate, it's not the same thing it is in the US.
@PharaohNefertiti It actually is a cover, you self righteous twat and it was originally done by BAND AID in the 1980's because they wanted to raise MONEY FOR CHARITY. I'm so sorry that's such a huge embarrassment. And again, big apologies if the lyrics offend you, let's just repeat: A COVER. By the way, you big weatherman, Florida doesn't suffer from serious droughts or lack of food shortages (in extreme cases) so piss off.
@ICantStopTheSong Like I said, I know it's a cover, 98% of all Glee songs are covers, I just wished they'd cover a better song. No need to get so defensive about it, it's not like you wrote it. And the money BAND AID raised went to the Ethiopian government, not its people. And if the song's about Ethiopia, why generalize it by addressing all of Africa and not Ethiopia specifically? Africa's a large continent, and so much more than its tragedies. Just like North America. Or Europe.
@PharaohNefertiti I am not defensive, however, if I see a pointless comment, I will pick up on it. If you know that it is a cover, why bother to target the Glee Cast?! I know most of the money went to the Ethopian government but the intention is still there - to help. We all know that Africa is a large continent, we're not thick however, they were trying to help and raise money for charity. Get your head out of your arse.
@ICantStopTheSong I never attacked the Glee cast, I only expressed my disappointment in their song choice. As for good intentions, isn't that what the road to hell is paved with? I'm sorry, but you need more than good intentions to impress me, & Band Aid & this song did not impress me. That's not Glee's fault. But the fact that they're singing this widens the song's audience, and its distorted image of Africa. Look, feel free to like the song, we all have our opinions. I just don't, that's all.
@PharaohNefertiti Good intentions are not good enough for you? Well, it seems nothing is. I'm sorry if the song doesn't 'impress' you but why look up the song and insult it on the actual song's page?! You were asking for an argument. And the song does not give a 'distorted image of Africa', my family and friends have listened to this song numerous times and do not think of that continent differently. We all have our opinions, true, but stop publicly showing yours off.
@ICantStopTheSong I'm sorry, but I'm allowed to state my opinion, even if it offends you. This song came up when I was looking at the Christmas songs the Glee kids were doing this year. I stated my opinion, because I do a lot of volunteer work both in the US and abroad. If you really care about helping people and changing the world, then do it. Don't just praise songs that didn't actually help anyone and say how awesome it is. Be the change. Don't just talk about it. God bless.
@PharaohNefertiti Seriously, preaching to me will not change my opinion. I volunteer constantly so do not act like it is a massively important deed; please get off the Glee Cast's music page, you are just being insulting. And you should be sorry, insult any other song but do not insult the song where EVERY SINGLE penny that is raised from people buying it is going to charity. I talk and act, there's a difference.
@ICantStopTheSong As I've stated, the vast majority of the money BAND AID raised didn't actually go to the people who needed it. And I'm glad you volunteer! Donating time & effort does & means a lot more than listening to a cheesy song, doesn't it? I like Glee. I like the music, normally. This song bugs me. It doesn't bug you. That's OK because we're not the same person. But I'll never see the value in it. I'm not trying to change your mind, I'm trying to get you to understand my point is all.
This is my favourite song from the Christmas album (: (: (: it's touching and I really can't wait for this Christmas because it's going to be so special!!
@tyggjokula123 First that is idiotic, RHI/SLY is in an official channel and that channel doesn't have the other one so... well, comparing one official video with one fan video is crap reasoning (and I'm the one with the fucked up brain? oh boy...)
