The thing about liquids is true on the first block above the top of the world. Beyond that, NOTHING can be placed.  That means that your cobblestone/obsidian structures only get one more meter higher than anything else, if you take the time to play with liquids...

in 1.8 the slimes only splits , if they for example have 1 heart left and you damage them with one heart . if you would make 2 hearts of damage they wont split. thats why not every sword worked - different damage.
