Shame May spent all those years poncing around with Queen. That said, if it's legal you go where the money is, unless you are big corporate America. In that case legalities don't matter. When are you Yanks going to start throwing some of your financial terrorists in jail??? Sorry digressed from the music. Good effort Brian.
@LieKiller... you got it right... IN YOUR OPINION. Agree to disagree I guess. I love May, and he is a rock ICON imo, while Thayil is just some underrated guitar player overshadowed for years by one of rock/metal's most amazing voices EVER.... but still, May's version doesn't sit well with me, it sounds a little forced, and it's because Thayil most definitely IS every bit as much a part of Soundgarden's trademark sound
sorry, but kim thayil's guitar style is better suited imo... nobody plays like thayil, he's been world's most underrated and overlooked guitar player in the world forever... and we all know it's because Cornell's voice steal's the show every time
@axhand1e In your opinion, in my opinion Thayil could have been replaced with any number of rock guitarists and the band wouldn't have suffered much. Thayil's leads aren't all that and never have been. Soundgarden was defined by Cornell and Cameron.
@LieKiller Obviously you're not a musician. Without Thayil, Soundgarden wouldn't sound like Soundgarden. Sure, Chris is the voice and his lyrics kicks ass, Matt drives the sound with his killer off-beats, Hiro and Ben respectively played solid lines and countermelodies and have helped with songwriting too... none of that would've mattered without Kim's riffs and chaotic melody. To say Thayil is replacable is utterly ridiculous.
@soundgardener75 Obviously you overrate Thayil, a decent guitarist but his work by no means defined Soundgarden or their sound. Room a thousand years wide is a great example of how his contribution actually diminished the overall song.
@uuummm66 I am RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT, END of discussion! What you numbnuts are failing to comprehend is that you are commenting to a video that PROVED me RIGHT! LMAO! Suck on some reality, fool.
Imagine if Brian May had played on all of Badmotorfinger. That album wold have been a seminal hard rock record instead of being relegated to genre music. He is amazing. I mean, I love that album as is, but the sledge hammers on Slaves and Bulldozers or Jesus Christ or even Outshined would have been like giant earth movers slamming on your head.. It just would have been epic.
@1000diesel Brian May's contribution is fitting as is. If he contributed to Badmotorfinger, that wouldn't have sounded like what we're hearing today. Sure, it may possibly be good, but that wouldn't be Soundgarden.
Chris Cornell is the most powerful rock vocalist I've ever heard. He knows exactly when to sing, and when not to sing. And boy, you better listen when he does sing.
Holy shit, this is one of the reasons why I love soundgarden. Read the lyrics and apply it to the american economy. I swear to god Chris Cornell is a physic, read limo wrecks lyrics as well.
i dont know... its not bad... but when i hear soundgarden i think iommi... not necessarily brian may.... HOWEVER.... cornell does some very similar vocal parts like robert plant.... I WOULD LIKE to hear soundgarden cover Immigrant Song.....
@gilligan80 Listen to the guitar part man...Brian May can play any kind of Rock/Metal, Tony Iommi and he are very close pals and Brian May is the only guest guitarist to ever appear on a Black Sabbath album "Headless Cross" - When Death Calls (1989), Brian's solo's are legendary and truly make any bands recording better! GREAT SONG!
Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, and Matt Cameron are the perfect combo. This version is cool, but no one plays like Kim Thayil... sorry die hard Queen fans.
Actually Im a huge soundgarden fan and love Kim Thayil's dirty grind but iamo he's about 3/4 the guitar player Brian May is (skillwise & tone control) .
@LieKiller no your not a soundgarden fan your a dipshit, kim thayil is probably one of the best lead guitarist ever, just cause your not progressive enough to hear it. eat shit and die.
@dukeljk Haha, I've been a Soundgarden fan since the early 90s. Kim's licks just aren't that impressive, there are plenty of lead guitar players in the rock world that blow Thayil out of the water...in a major way.
Thats really good actually Cornell's voice is magnificent - also without meaning to sound like an old git but don't think people today realise how influential Queen was on all these bands they must have been delighted to play with old Brian!
Does anyone know why Brian May decided to play on this track never quite understood how that would come about.
The only major thing I notice is that the guitar tone is much thicker (better in my opinion) than it was on "Badmotorfinger". For some reason though, I still love the original more. This is really fucking cool to hear nonetheless.
you mean the scream in basically ALL his solos?! Its the same setup hes always had. First, is his red special guitar which was probably made by the gods it sounds so good! then he puts it through a treble booster, then a three way splitter, which goes into an eventide harmoniser, then it finally goes into three VOX AC-30s. In total it costs easily over £10,000!
Your comment remind me some Master Card Ads that used to compare the material things that have price with the emotional effect you feel when you bought one.
Red Special Replica + Treble Booster + Three Way Splitter + 3 VOX AC-30's to emulate Brian's style = over 10.000
Being Brian May, with his talent, creativity and feeling; composing like Brian May with his ideas and techniques. Is priceless.
haha sorry my bad! Im obsessed with brian may nd sometimes i get a bit overenthusiastic. The main thing is the guitar and booster. oh yes, i forgot to say, he uses a sixpence too :)
Well Black Sabbath was largely influenced by Queen, or more specifically, Brian May, the guitarist of Black Sabbath was one of Brian's closest friends.
The only conceivable downside is that this was done for Greenpeace, so naturally, I would have to offset my "donation" by purchasing rocket launchers for the Japanese to use whilst whaling. Otherwise this is quite good.
I think this version is lacking. Most of the guitar leads are gone, and it sounds bare. The opening of the album version is so intense, with everything assaulting you at once. I like May, and I grew up on Queen. But the version on Badmotorfinger is better to me.
Yeeeeah! I'm a Huge Queen fan and I love Soundgarden and untill today had no idea of this! Sounds stupid but makes me happy so much, I tought Queen and Soundgarden where kind of incompatible but, just hear!
I think Dr. Brian May is the most versatile guitar player, and the most brilliant and tallented!
why didn't they use this version on the record? it's fat. may is channeling hendrix and jeff beck to the baddest. cornell's voice is powerful as all fuck, too.
Shame May spent all those years poncing around with Queen. That said, if it's legal you go where the money is, unless you are big corporate America. In that case legalities don't matter.
