I'm 15 years old and I have a construction class every Thursdays for two hours. I have been recommended by my lecturer to be a bricky cause my speed and how efficient I am with my time I get given for tasks. I am also always straight with the bricked walls also I am good with team building. Should I be one as I have other careers in mind?
@JoRddMin Go for it kidda, things are hard at the min, but things will get better with jobs soon,
There is a huge trade shortage and us trowels are up there, i make a decent living from it and you have a great laugh it beats being stuck in an office all day, aim to be self employed when the boom hits again. Good luck.
Yeah I understand the housing market has went down dramatically :(
I went to a place near where I live and they only have one brick layer which only does small jobs so they have to employ brickies to do the bigger jobs. I was told to come back when Im older enough so I might just do that. Cheers :)
@JoRddMin Are you doing brickwork at college? When i left school i went on a 3 day a week college course as jobs were no bricklaying jobs, then i got offered a job as an apprentice and me already doing a college course off my own back put me to the front of the que and the job was mine! I would advise you to find your local college and sign up for a course i even think the goverment will help you out with costs! good luck fella.
@chainedtoaradiator Well i'm still at Academy (High School) but since I have a college right next to one of the buildings we get to go to that for our Construction course. Basically we do everything in Construction, Brick laying/ joiner/ electrian/ plumbing/ painting and tiling and all sorts :)
@JoRddMin Im self employed doing my own work and when the money is ok we do a bit of site work.
I did my apprentiship with a company got my qualifications and went self employed. When your at college try and get your advanced craft you will be a better bricklayer for it. Your still young mate so you have loads of time. I hope it all works out for you mate!
@JoRddMin Advanced craft is about different arches, just fancy complicated brickwork, level 2 is just for ruff site bashers. When you have your level 3 (advanced craft) your a real trowel. No woorys fella just get out there and go for it.
@JoRddMin I just got signed off today mate, was the happyest day of my life and i can say it was all worth it, im now going for my builders permit and just got all my new gear ill be heading out on my own..its a great trade and a beautiful country austrlaia is its great for working and traveling, hope ya go for it mate :)

you sound like a wood pecker with all that tapping! Push the brick into place with your hand. Never use the trowel.
