Wow im a skater, and this is awesome! but he did cheat the takeoff of the triple axel. He turned a half rotation before taking off, he had a good RFO edge but took off to late.
lol everything looks rediculus because its in slow mo, ps if you want to get higher then a 5 when you are testing i suggest not pre routating... that was to everyone talking about pre routating :)
I never would have believed that a man could have landed a triple axel in 1957. The first time it was landed at a World Championships was in 1978. Jenkins could have been the first had he attempted that jump when he was competing. Amazing.
Not to take away from his achievement but if you look closely, that 1st half turn pretty much takes place on the ground. Still a great jump considering the time and place, but I don't think it's truly a triple axel.
Loved the Sun Valley rink when I saw a show there in 1992.That was some triple-axel by David. He was a Dr.and retired a few years ago.Its amazing that his bro,Carol and his kids didn't become skaters.I mean 3 Olympic/World gold medalists in that family!!!!!
My jaw still drops open every time I watch this, and I've watched it many times!!! lol. To think he landed a triple axel - a nice, clean high one at that - 21 years before it was landed in competition.
It is a Delayed Axel instead of an Open Axel. A Delayed Axel starts out as an gigantic Waltz jump and only pulls in at the end to make the enough rotations. An Open Axel is, as it suggested, opened all the way.
This 3 axel has better mechanics than that performed by Lysacek...whose 3 axel IMHO is not an axel. Lysacek's takes off from the wrong edge...I'd rather watch this one any day..
first think about the type of skates they had back then and did you see the hieght on that jump his triple axel was effortless if he was born now and was wearing the best skates maybe the Pro flex 2 with the Matrix 2 he would be able to land a quad axel and probably some quintuples too. lol
Triple Axel!! AMAZING!! Was he the first person ever to land it in 1957? And what's the first jump he performed a kind of a single axel/ballet jump?? no one does that anymore!!
he jumps a lot like ilia kulik. i seen kulik do a standing triple axel that was every bit as perfect as it would be on the ice. I bet david jenkins could do that too back then. i love the triple axel. its my favorite jump. best one being brian boitano!
Well duh,it was over 50 years ago.Sun Valley has the refigerated rink year round now and covers it up in the warmer months. Its amazing that no other skaters came from that talented family with 3 gold medalist winners.None of David,Hayes and Carol's kids became skaters.I hope this post shows up coz the ones I typed in the past didn't.
he couldve done a quad with that height if he didn't have a wrap! take off was wayy late though, looks 1/4 cheated on take off. i used to do that on single axel til i kicked my foot through straighter and not in a huge circle
I'm sorry, this axel looks dangerously like the Steven Cousin's one... the take off is so delayed that almost -and I clearly said "almost"- the foot makes 3-turn... with the new judgment system it sould be penalized at least with an "!"
Well it's not under the new system it was a triple axel landed in 1957!!! Fer crissakes chill out and just be impressed with the fact that anything like this was possible outdoors in crappy skates so long ago by one of the greatest male skaters who ever lived.
This is precisely where the International Judging System fails miserably and demonstrates that people without much knowledge of good technique had a hand in it. Good freeskating jumps should take off on a curve, and, since curves are round, the rotation starts before the take off.
It's not really possible to take off from the back edge and complete a Triple Axel. He's definitely just curving around on the blade, as several other skaters do.
I respect you point of view... But I still belive that axle is heavyly pre-rotated and nearly a salchow... I don't understand why for the simple fact I expressed an opinion I have to be attacked with offensive privat messages that I'm receiving since this (I'm not referring to you Zuranthium)
@iceroby72 Absolute rubbish! He takes off on a deep, curved forward outside edge and I don't see any three turn at all. In fact, his take off is probably cleaner than most 3 axels we see today as often many of them are skidded on the take off. You are just trying to over critical, as floskate says this was 1957 for Heaven's sake!!!!!!! I was not even born then and I'm 47 now!!!!!
@npe1 Yes, yes, yes ... I just expressed my opinion ... I didn't do it to obtain people consents ... Be nice and calm down ... I ment no offence to anyone ... I still belive i was a bad tale off though ...
@zipidiedoda As I wrote, it seams to me that the take of was so delayed that he actually made a 3turn ... so, form my point of view, he changes the edge.
@iceroby72 You do know that you have to skid on a triple axel right? Less than a handful of people could do it without the skid. You need to skid. He did executed the jump correctly.
@filipinoICEsk8ter I know that. Two recent examples were lambiel and Sandu, in fact their axels were not at all consistent. Anyway, from my point of view Jenkins's triple axel was severely prerotated.... Are you Hunting my posts little wanker?
@iceroby72 For one thing I'm out practicing triple axel and looking for examples. Calling me a wanker isn't going to stop me from being a better skater. You called me arrogant, look at you BS ing on skaters that are great. There are more examples besides Lambiel and Sandu. Plushenko, Yagudin, Lysacek, Mao Asada, Midori Ido, and Tonya harding skids into their triple axel just like David Jenkins. BTW pre rotation is common to all triples.Just like toe salchow, loop, axel, flip, and lutz.
@filipinoICEsk8ter For somebody who doesn't care about my opinion you get too excited. If you think I'm an arrogant, ignorant etc, way dont' you stop hunting my posts? You are so stupid that you don't read carefully what I wrote. I intended that skid on the axel take of is not a mistake ... the skid make that jump more secure and helps the rotation. But like all techniques if you exagerate you do like Jenkins in this video. Go beck to the toilet little one ... handjobs are waiting for you.
@iceroby72 For one thing I found your post on here while I was told to look up David Jenkins. Why would I have time hunting down your posts? I'm the one practicing and watching triple axel examples. Triple axel wasn't even a bad take off, if it was, he would be in a bad air position and would have fell. Why don't you take your inappropriate name calling and act like more of an adult. In figure skating, inappropriate/ vulgar name calling is not necessary. Goes to show who's the bad one here.
@filipinoICEsk8ter For somebody who doesn't care about my opinion you get too excited. If you think I'm an arrogant, ignorant etc, way dont' you stop hunting my posts? You told that you're practicing you triple axle ... good ... make a take off like the one in this video then go to an international competition and see what a real judge pannel thinks about it ok?
@iceroby72 For one thing I was told to look Jenkins up. Seeing is that he is one of the greatest skaters of the 20th century. Im here to watch and learn. If I don't know what I'm talking about, then why is it that he didn't fall? By the way, learn how to speak like an adult. Instead of calling people inappropriate names like "wanker" or saying "Go beck to the toilet little one...handjobs are waiting for you". I mean seriously be an adult.
@iceroby72 You call me an arrogant wanker, look at yourself. If you are a judge, you'd show respect and appreciation for skaters. With your attitude, it shows that you are not even a real judge. You leaving bad disrespectful comments to other skaters shows you have no respect for the skaters or this sport. If it weren't for the Jenkins, we wouldn't have triple axels.
@iceroby72 I think the reason that the take off looks like there's a 3-turn is that Jenkins knew how to hold a proper edge - he is taken off on a clean outside edge - not the flat of his blade
@iceroby72 back then skaters were mostly judged on the figure eights, so they mostly practiced on those rather than freestyle. That's the reason their jumps might look "wrong" to us these days as jumps and spins were not the most practiced aspects of figure skating back then.
He is clearly making a curve on the outside edge, and the reason his technique looks so foreign to you is because his technique is based on the use of edges as they would be used in figures.
OK OK!!! Hey people don't even dare to touch an america hero!!! I shkated for 12 years and I know how an a axel's take off should be... Questionable or not and in that occasion the edge was an inside back one... and please don't call ignorant somebody only because he expreses a poit of view.
