@losfreddy But at the same rate--this video is not "how an airlock works" but instead its "inmate brew airlock - how to make one". So I see nothing wrong with it! LOL Youtube how they work--I'm sure there's a video out there on it (or you can check out mine in my Basics of Home Brewing series for a verbal explanation). Cheers!
@losfreddy You could if that's what you had. Condoms are sterile though, so they're a bit more sanitary--though if you're making hooch, it doesn't really matter... LOL
@wibrle Haha--no problem! Just check with any home brew supply--they should have extras on hand, and they should be no more than 30 cents US. They're the replacements for the drilled holes in fermenting bucket lids. I hope that helps! Cheers!
i never need an airlock bacause my fermenting bottles have a mason jar lid and is very good at keeping an air tight seal that burps itself and never spills - JUST MAKE SURE YOU SANITIZE BOTH PIECES VERY WELL.
Another air lock is a tube from your fermenter's lid to a mason jar 3/4 full of water. you can even use a glass of water, as the seal between your ferm. lid and the tube is the only important one if the other end of the hose stays submerged. CHEERS AND HAPPY BREWS TO YOUS!
you could take a pin and poke a tiny hole in the condom/balloon. The pressure of the CO2 leaving the must is enough to keep any beasts from entering the tiny hole.
@terpsichoreankid hey, im brewing mead and im using a condom on the top, ive been told by several friends that you poke holes in the condom, some say poke holes before you put it on the bottle, others say wait for it to inflate, you seem to know your stuff. do i poke holes in it? and if so when, any other tips will help to becuz this is my first time brewing. thank you
@terpsichoreankid i wasnt trying to get drunk, i just thought it would be something kool to try becuz i heard about tht thing from some of my friends.
Hey, I bought an airlock and made a bath of Hard cider, but i didnt know that there had to be water in the airlock,i had the airlock on for about 20 hours before i put water in it, will this batch survive?
@nwoisnow As long as it was bubbling and fermenting, I don't see why not! At that point, the CO2 created was being expelled through the airlock, so the likelihood of any air getting through that rush of gas is pretty low. I'd imagine it will be fine.
Since you were using condoms and they weren't holding enough air, could you use maybe a VERY large balloon? Incase I break all my airlocks? Or just don't want to spend the 3 bucks on each one?
@RightWingCon81 You could do that! For some reason with mine, the gas was building up too quickly for the pinholes to allow it to escape properly. I think next go round I'll try poking even more pinholes into it, that is, if I don't use the airlocks! Cheers!
@terpsichoreankid hey i have a question, ive been told by many people that you use a baloon or a condom, like i saw you doing, but they say that you poke about 5 or 6 holes in them. some say you poke holes after its inflated, others say you poke them before you put it on. im looking to get into this hobby but i dont feel like wasting 3 bucks. help me out?
@express375 I did actually do that, but the gas was forming so quickly that it didn't seem to escape--or maybe it had gotten clogged or something... I don't know--but either way, these things are handy!
@rawimpact At 2:38 I mention that "I give this about 45 seconds until it burps" but it actually wound up being 49 seconds, which is what my note is for. :-)
Btw: your correct at the end of your video where you state you no longer have to worry about your condom popping off and contaminating your drink, Now you just have to worry about getting poisoned by not using FDA, food grade approved rubber grommets.
@FletcherHabit I've never done an experiment to compare the two, but I do know that regular table sugar adds a little 'fruitiness' to it. Dextrose is used for priming home brewed bottles of beer, because it adds no flavor--only carbonation and a slight amount of additional alcohol. I have read that home brewers that have tried table sugar for priming have said it makes a very cidery, fruity type flavor, which isn't what you want in beer, but in wines is perfectly acceptable.
@terpsichoreankid haha. you should make yourself a video intro with you dressed as jack with some rum :P
apparently, when making an airlock from a condom, instead of bleeding them every few hours you can put a tiny hole in the top after they first inflate. i dunno. sounds legit to me. might try it. :D
@ricochetfuzzy Nope tried it. Too much air leaks out and I only poked it with a needle once.(before inflate). So It isn´t like a boner but more like well.....a condom. without air.
@ricochetfuzzy LOL Yes--I will have to do that! You know--the funny thing is that I DID actually poke holes through the end of the condom--it seemed that the fermentation was just too vigorous. Now--I don't know if the tack I used got through--it seemed to, but that might have been my issue. When I wind up doing it again though, I'll have my handy dandy airlock lids ready to go--plus I don't have to worry about dealing with the latex smell. Cheers man!
@chevygearhead454 Yep, you could do that too! You'd just want to make sure the drilled hole was a tad bit smaller than the tubing--that way it would be a very tight fit. The grommet eliminates the needs for that exact measurement. Cheers!
@SuperCHOPPERBOB The things is, I DID put several pinholes into the tip of it. The fermentation was happening so quickly that I simply had to find a better way to allow the gas to escape. I don't know if the pinholes got clogged or if I just didn't have enough of them--but they just weren't working well for that particular batch. Now I've got those lids which fit on just about every bottle, so they'll last a good long time. Cheers!
You should have shown a visible test of the airlock by squeezing and then releasing and watching the valve hold pressure & push water both ways. If the valve water doesn't move both ways, then you know you don't have a good seal. I also found a non-distillation mash alcohol extraction method yesterday that might interest some: v=rME3Q8NCWQM

sweet, very nice.. But may I add for folk who don't have access to power tools they could probably do the hole with a round hand file and something sharp to poke a hole to start with. It's only plastic after all :)
Personally, I haven't done any inmate brewing, but I do want to try making my own cider from fresh fruit, but it might be a lot of faffing to press/juice.
@LeJimster Ah yes--you could totally do that. The lids on the fruit juice bottles are fairly thin--so a good, sharp razor would totally do the trick--especially if you install the grommet. I've also seen bottles where almost the entire top is gone (I suppose you could actually just get rid of the top entirely) and use one of those rubber stoppers that has the hole drilled in the middle of it for the airlock. Any of those would work very well if you didn't have access to a rotary. Cheers!

@yz125racer258 It should be fine--I'd let it be. Unless there is a large gaping hole in the condom, you're a-ok. It should fill back up within the next 12 hours or so. Cheers!
Very true! If someone didn't want to go through the airlock making process, or didn't have the means to, that would be an excellent alternative. I've also heard of using balloons (maybe better pressure control) but I would be wary because they're not sterile like condoms are. Thanks for the advice!
