Mr. Rich has beaten them all. The echoes of his sticks still ring. And any drummer worth his salt, knows what I mean. There was one. And now there are none. Mr. Rich.
Bow to perhaps the king of rock drummers. If Paice doesn't hold the throne, at minimum he shares it. I'd even go so far as to argue he could be one of the best jazz drummers...he's really the perfect fusion of a jazz and rock drummer. He can play hard and heavy like Bonzo, yet soft, fast, and incredibly technical like Buddy Rich.
@ritchie63 My belief is Buddy would probably win that battle, but he'd have to give 100% IMO. What I'd really want to see is Ian vs. Carl Palmer, Vinnie Colaita, Dave Weckl, or Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham, Max Roach, etc. Those would all be epic drum battles, probably the most impressive battles we could see today since Buddy Rich is no longer with us. Neither is Bonzo. If those two drummers were still alive, one could only wonder how much better they'd be.
