Rather, let's think real? How about trying to create full or plug-in hybrids to replace the conventional gas car? And for people who love cars and more importantly, performance cars... Electric cars are not that bad. Not bad at all, they are very powerful as proven by the BMW I8 which is rumored to generate nearly 700-800 lb-ft of torque! That's more than about most supercars today!
LOL Yea sure peoples can't park their cars properly , most of them can't drive properly... and you are going to see them FLYING in their personal little planes ? LOL
Love this thing, it is the best solution so far that i have seen for an air transport that can rival the car. I hope that this will be an exception from the rest of nasas research and will end with a usable and affordable product.
lets see,a very personal flying thing. Ask the 74 year old pilot at the Reno air races that landed nose first at 400MPH. I have known a lot of professional pilots that are no more, can't emagine Bubba trying to land in a cow pasture, lets not forget drunk as well. I am a 35 year pilot with no accidents. I don't fly no more, can't afford it.
40 something years and they tease us with another dream this is 2011 and where is the home of tomorrow? or a robot maid they have been talking about this personal vehicle since the 40's and we still drive on the ground and we are still not in space. I am tired of watching our taxes go to NASA for dreaming.
they need to make this rechargeable through propeller motion so you can extend flight time by using thermals to climb in elevation with an adapted infrared optics you could easily find the thermals to use for this purpose!
None of these ideas will ever come to fruition. Aviation as it exists today is out of control, in "controlled" airspace, no less. I've seen idiots in 2-seat Cessnas damn near kill each other...what do you think will happen with a sky full of these running amok ???? And they'll come crashing down on your house, family car, and anything else unfortunate enough to be under one when it quits flying. Knightsix
@60knightsix That is a problem but not neccesarily a killing blow against craft like this. How many people die in just a single day in north america from car crashes? Theres a certain level of risk the public is willing to accept.
We're wasting national resources to come up with crap like this? How about finding a way to convince to automotive industry to make carbon fiber and composite cars with aluminum engines and other aluminum parts a standard. it the 21st century for Pete's sake. If you reduce weight, you improve the power-to-weight ratio which means you can essentially use less power/fuel to move the same vehicle.
I think it's good people all over the world are putting their creativity to the test by coming up with all kinds of creations, which, in the long run, will likely end up inspiring or lending ideas to the more significant, more groundbreaking discoveries to be made in the near future!
Every area of science should be in constant motion, even for military applications. All you should do is stop the war-making, not the research. Sadly that's something very unlikely to happen.
@zenoparodie I'm right there with you man. One of the reasons I want to vote for Ron Paul is because of all the true budget cuts he plans to implement with 1 Trillion dollars being cut the first year and bringing all of the troops home from around the world as well.
I guess informing clients about high risk of entering vortex ring state in case of such a rotor configuration will not be a part of marketing campaign...
I'm not enthused about this thing because it's over 250 pounds in weight. That means it's not classified as an Ultra Light, so you still need a pilot's license. Once you have a pilot's license, you can make enormous amounts of cash and that in turn means you can afford something much better than a stupid puffin.
@cprich22 don't get me wrong, americans have actually invented a few things over the years but not all of the things they claim are theirs. Afterall, it is a Brit that is regarded as the inventor of the jet engine but in truth there were actually 3 patents for the jet engine about 30 years before the Brit got the idea, and they were all from americans! One was merely a written idea of principles without drawings, but still, 30 years before Frank Wittle or Hans Von Ohain(of Germany)!
Designed and developed by NASA? I think the commentator should get his facts straight! Typical American! Think they've invented stuff they haven't! This is actually based on a Nazi German design from W W II as illustrated by the pilots position. NASA have merely redesigned it to take off vertically. Lying thieving Americans at it again. Next they'll be telling us that they invented the light bulb!
what was that cartoon that aired in the 90's which had three characters and each had there own machine that would attach to their bodies one yellow - for land, blue - flying, green - land. this machine reminds me of that cartoon. just can't think of the name.
@bigsoundz Many drivers today have a great deal of difficulty mastering the complexities of turn signals. Can't ever see the average driver passing the necessary testing required to obtain a pilot's license. As always, it is an interesting concept.

True. Sadly a large part of Americans couldn`t even fit in because of obesity. Even if they could make it big enough it couldn`t get of the ground. Also landing like that is ridiculous and very dangerous. Let show it with people build and ready. Paper planes with cheap models can be done by anyone these days.
In the future, masters will fly in the sky with some kind of aircraft, but most of the people will still step on earth just like stupid bipedal animals...
@darkon4431 Eh....dont people fly in the sky in 'some sort of aircraft' while most people still just walk right now?!?! I guess your statement could have been prophetic if you had said it a couple hundred years ago.....Your like a Reverse Nostradamus! Wow!
@darkon4431 Hmmm, and just like Nostradamus you write things in some sort of code.....since you are the REVERSE Nostradamus, then you must be telling me something about my past......Hmmmm I think I read Brave New World back in High School.....what secret could you be revealing about my past with your statement??? Hmmmm my mind is going to be working on this puzzle!!!!
why is nasa trying to appeal to the private sector consumers? Last time i checked they were a govt run administration focused on space exploration. Bastards get enough of our money as it is.
NASA - they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Here is an absurd idea.. and design. Twin rotor VTOL craft are notoriously unreliable on landing take-off (Osprey, anyone?) And how do you land in a strong wind? I guess the first $10 million was spent coming up with the name, the next $10 million choosing the office wallpaper, etc. A boondoggle waste of money... again.
@Tobacc0 the osprey just needs more computers. another part of the problem is pilot training time accidents caused reduced flights which means less proficiency, which in turn causes more accidents which grounds more pilots from more trainingn . vicous downward spiral no pun intended.
Such an aircraft would require both fixed and rotary wing instruction and ratings. To simply obtain a private pilot license requires a minimum of 40 hrs, where as in reality the average is more like 52. Then a student would have to learn how to fly a rotary wing aircraft and that'd probably take another 40 hrs. In addition this is a single person craft, so any person desiring the fly couldn't be instructed in how to fly it specifically. This is a complete waste of our tax dollars!
If Nanowire batteries ever become mature enough, this same vehicle could get a range of between 400 to 550 miles. These next few decades should be pretty interesting to watch.
I'd settle for a microturbine Jet-A powered version of this thing with a 120-mile range. It would be more energy efficient and cleaner than an electric craft recharged from some filthy coal burning power plant several hundred miles away.
im glad it has no emmissions because looking at the size of it if it let loose with an emmission while you were underneath it look out below. im just saying its going to be pretty nasty.
I always like how people say electric is 100% clean, like electric energy just magically appears out of nowhere, when in fact, over 50% of the electric enrgery in the USA is produced by coal burning plants, & the Puffin is about the stupidest watse of government money I have ever seen, like CEOs will suddenly be flying between buildings in one man aircraft, as if
this look pretty awesome, but I hate it when people make out that electric vehicles are good for the enivroment. They're worse, getting the electricity from the powerstation and then charging up a battery uses more energy then simply releasing the energy straight from the fuel (like in cars)
environmentally friendly, laughable. When will people realize that energy is energy, whether you are burning gas in you plane, or whether your burning coal, to charge the battary for you environmentally friendly plane, the pollution externality is essentially the same.
lets not even get on to how do you govern a flying population
@psinanan In the near future, electricity WILL be environmentally friendly, and this plane is meant for the near future, not now... Also, people now can own their private plane and get a pilots license so the government is already governing a flying population.
jesus, people can't even control their credit cards let alone this thing. Make it a sit on arrangment like a motorbike with 3 electric motors and they may have something alittle more logical. Nasa, I have plans already, CALL me
i used to have lucid dreams about this idea when i was like 8 years old. was the best feeling ever only seeing whats infront of you flying over citties and things just to hear this dream i once craved to become a reality is over whelming. obviously im not the only one with dreas like tht
@11thetruthisoutthere When you were 8 years old? So, you're telling us about last night's dream? Sorry, couldn't resist. You had so many spelling and grammar errors in your comment. ;-)
Single occupancy flight machine are a novelty that have been around for 60 years. This one is quieter and has an interesting design. If perfected, this would be a rich persons toy or public service vehicle for special use (think police or forest service). This is not a transportation solution for the masses.
@Watzitoya I'm pretty sure where you live and at what times you gotta get somewhere...
I can easily imagine that in the bigger cities this could be useful if it only were a prototype... however if more ppl started using them then it would make a whole load of trouble
Haha was it not similar criticism with the announcement of the first car? or the first biplane? I predict this will be widely used within the next 30yrs
Because people weren't bad enough at driving...

why is nasa trying to appeal to the private sector consumers? Last time i checked they were a govt run administration focused on space exploration. Bastards get enough of our money as it is.

Electric motors designed to fail! You heard it here first!
terminator9990 1 year ago
NASA - they know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Here is an absurd idea.. and design. Twin rotor VTOL craft are notoriously unreliable on landing take-off (Osprey, anyone?) And how do you land in a strong wind? I guess the first $10 million was spent coming up with the name, the next $10 million choosing the office wallpaper, etc. A boondoggle waste of money... again.
Tobacc0 1 year ago
@Tobacc0 the osprey just needs more computers. another part of the problem is pilot training time accidents caused reduced flights which means less proficiency, which in turn causes more accidents which grounds more pilots from more trainingn . vicous downward spiral no pun intended.
circusboy90210 1 year ago
Such an aircraft would require both fixed and rotary wing instruction and ratings. To simply obtain a private pilot license requires a minimum of 40 hrs, where as in reality the average is more like 52. Then a student would have to learn how to fly a rotary wing aircraft and that'd probably take another 40 hrs. In addition this is a single person craft, so any person desiring the fly couldn't be instructed in how to fly it specifically. This is a complete waste of our tax dollars!

its just like the plans in the movie "battle for terra" nasa is a copy cat! lol bridging-humanity (dot) com

If they make a working prototype. That doesn't mean that they'l sell it to a company wich will put it on mass production.
It's much more dangerous considernig pilot's mistakes.
It's a nice concept though.
Today not much people can affoard to travel with helicopter. And not much of a helipads.

If Nanowire batteries ever become mature enough, this same vehicle could get a range of between 400 to 550 miles. These next few decades should be pretty interesting to watch.
Spartan043 1 year ago
I'd settle for a microturbine Jet-A powered version of this thing with a 120-mile range. It would be more energy efficient and cleaner than an electric craft recharged from some filthy coal burning power plant several hundred miles away.

im glad it has no emmissions because looking at the size of it if it let loose with an emmission while you were underneath it look out below. im just saying its going to be pretty nasty.

For those worried about the environment, as far as I recall, there is a solar charger for this. Plug it in for a quick charge if you really want.
Oh, and hopefully you'll need a PAV license to fly one, at least I won't have to worry about the crazy taxi drivers in this thing.
Munchkinross 1 year ago
I always like how people say electric is 100% clean, like electric energy just magically appears out of nowhere, when in fact, over 50% of the electric enrgery in the USA is produced by coal burning plants, & the Puffin is about the stupidest watse of government money I have ever seen, like CEOs will suddenly be flying between buildings in one man aircraft, as if
sphinxrising58 1 year ago
this look pretty awesome, but I hate it when people make out that electric vehicles are good for the enivroment. They're worse, getting the electricity from the powerstation and then charging up a battery uses more energy then simply releasing the energy straight from the fuel (like in cars)
HotFuzz456 1 year ago
environmentally friendly, laughable. When will people realize that energy is energy, whether you are burning gas in you plane, or whether your burning coal, to charge the battary for you environmentally friendly plane, the pollution externality is essentially the same.
lets not even get on to how do you govern a flying population
psinanan 1 year ago
@psinanan In the near future, electricity WILL be environmentally friendly, and this plane is meant for the near future, not now... Also, people now can own their private plane and get a pilots license so the government is already governing a flying population.
MrFlipske 1 year ago
jesus, people can't even control their credit cards let alone this thing. Make it a sit on arrangment like a motorbike with 3 electric motors and they may have something alittle more logical. Nasa, I have plans already, CALL me

Single occupancy flight machine are a novelty that have been around for 60 years. This one is quieter and has an interesting design. If perfected, this would be a rich persons toy or public service vehicle for special use (think police or forest service). This is not a transportation solution for the masses.

you predict that huh? you do realize little things like this have been around for years all saying the same thing "with little expence"
but little do they know their are other hidden costs that will sky rocket the price for the average consumer.
