Wonderful song and wonderful interpretation. Does anybody know on which story the words are based. is it from the greek mystery? Thank you for an answer.

Can you post the Baird version if you have it. I had the norton anthology cd and book for one my baroque class but lost it. Loved this song the first time I heard it, it was the Baird version.
Beatiful. Very delicate and expressive. You mention about the versions of Baird and Rydén and Spägele. I suggest you to see in youtube MARILIA VARGAS.
My tears, what holds you back? Why not give vent to the proud sorrow, Which takes away my breath and oppresses my heart? Lidia, whom I adore so much, Why did you give me a pitying glance, alas, The paternal severity, it has imprisoned me, Shut within two walls remains the beautiful innocent one Where a ray of sunlight may not fall, And that which sorrows me more and increases my evil torment and pain, Has, through my reason, proven my darling to be evil!
And you, sorrowful eyes, you do not weep? My tears, what holds you back? Lidia, alas, I see that I am in need My idol, whom I adore so much She who remains withing cruel marble, for whom I breathe And yet I don't die? If deaht would favor me Now that I am without hope God, take away my life (I beg you) my bitter pain. But well I realize, that to torment me all the more, Fate also denies me death If it is then true, Oh God That only of my weeping Wicked destiny is thirsty
My God, this is the most heavenly song i ever heard. and her voice, an angel...her ornaments are perfect, the therbo was beautiful, many thanks for posting.
I find myself singing the part that starts at 4:18. The whole thing is gorgeous, tough. I might post one more version of this work if not a few. :) But this one is the one I love the most.
Also, that was really well done, and I love the trillos. That's my shit.

I'm not sure if someone mentioned this, but did anyone notice that the recording is in a different key than the music?

SO easy to write music in those days. A simple melodic line and the most simple harmonic indications. And the rest is up to the artists!

Excellent! I don't know why but this reminded me of Kirkby singing Purcell :)
Anyway, loved the beggining, and love the part that starts at 6:12, the instruments are fabulous, and her voice is great, it flows.... 5*

I also got a version by a Catherine Bott, I can send it to you if you don't have it already, I think it was on Branle...
margotlorena 2 years ago
Yes, I have Bott's album too. I also have 2 others: Susanne Rydén with Ensemble Musica Fiorita and Mona Spägele with Ensemble Incantato

I didn't like Bott's voice very much.... but anyway it is always great to be able to compare....

Same here. She can be great but not in this one.
