the screw is functioning not much different from a water wheel as a source of torque but i think 'carmium' is right. the classic archimedian screw was meant to lift water.
@carmium And it is not? You're only looking at the "open side" of the system where it lets water go out to the bottom, but the "closed side" of the system is keeping water up on the screw.
The screw has the highest water to mechanical efficiency (up to 97%) for low head turbines. This enables maximum generation year round. The screw is also fish friendly meaning fish can swim down its length un-harmed. This is another massive advantage over the waterwheel. Please visit the Hallidays Hydropower website for more information on this fantastic technology.
@DivBMesa This excellent for fish and it alleviates the flooding. Previously the fish had no way of travelling downstream as there was a 2.4m drop over which they would have to fall. Now they can swim down the Archimedean Screw. More information at hallidayshydropower website
prolocater if you look this screw here is a Generator not a pump it goes the wrong way (down hill). if you look at "huge archimedes screw pump at work in kinderdijk" it goes up hill that is a pump

@ziebol1 This scheme is a domestic scheme replacing the waterwheel for the old mill. It generates 30,000kWh per year and provides enough electricity and more to run the entire heating and hot water of the four large apartments in the mill.
@Gompie7 It's as if the water were a piece of wood with a hole and the screw were being backed out of it. If it were threaded in the opposite direction, it would have turned counter-clockwise.
Guard is fitted. It was removed for the purposes of the video by the company that installed it. Please see 'Archimedes Screw Turbine Construction by Hallidays' that demonstrates the screw and its protective screen. The screen is only ever removed by the installation team, Hallidays Hydropower. Hope this gives you a little peace of mind. Nick
@thereare4lights17 And if this was in the US, and it had a guard on it where people would lean on it and break it, they'd then frivolously sue the owner because of their own stupidity. Sad, but true. :( Sometimes I hate living here.
@brian1679 Why? Be aware of your surroundings and you'll be fine. If the argument is "for the children", well... if a parent does their job right, no child would be that dumb. And if they are, oh well. Darwin Happens. When they get out of the hospital, they'll have learned a valuable lesson about not being stupid or oblivious.
Protection devices hold too many stupid people's hands. No, a "ready bake" turkey doesn't actually mean you can put the whole thing, plastic and all, in to the oven.
