  • @davelloyd6882 I'm pretty sure someone called his hair a "Lady Di" hairdo at some point. Still fancied him, though. :-)

  • One of the most underated bands of all time.

  • What a superb innovative bass player Mick Karn was...

    RIP Mick

  • record companies couldn't handle their creativity and originality. "boys, we're too stupid. can you do a cover tune to make us money." Fuck i hate execs!!! just stay out of the way of genius and keep yer mouths shut!!!

  • @gogolplex74

Silly them for not considering a technology that had yet to be invented in 1975.

You may also want to read up on how to use Boolean search operators.

  • @moodyb quite sure that it was sarcastic :)

  • @MastroCicio Nah, they left me a very nasty response...

  • @moodyb I imagine it was a joke comment. if not, don't get angry with them, they won't understand.

  • reminds me of my middle school in the 80s luv it.

  • @gogolplex74 I know! They must've been too preoccupied time traveling in order to discover both the internet and google they didn't even think! Divvys.

  • @gogolplex74 hmmmmm google didnt exist when this band was formed.......who is the retard ?

  • This used to be a soul song.

  • It's also very sad and depressing that most of the so called music on the charts in the last few years have lyrics promoting hate and all sorts of negative behaviour :o(

  • About a year ago, I mentioned about vile (albeit rare) comments made towards this group... I said that one could bet that those comments are always made by ugly males who are jealous of the looks and talent of these guys. I also questioned why some people can be so vitriolic towards any artist doing a cover song... when this artist reason is to show his admiration and respect for the original artist and his love of the song.

  • @23sugarcane Bang on. To cover a song, they obviously love the song! Love the origin too.. so why do people hate that? It's stupid, don't they want people to get to know it's origins.. well a cover is a way of doing that.

  • @Leopardman33 Thanks for your comment. Considering how young David and the others were at the time and to do such an unique, original and amazing cover of this song, it is easy to understand why they were called 'the intelligent band'!

  • I prefer their "Ain't That Peculiar" cover. Also: I prefer David's later hair (haha), Richard's jacket is cool, for some reason Rob's shots make me laugh (when he looks at the camera), and the ending's (3:32) kinda strange.

  • @HAL0INREVERSE Well that's probably because Rob looks like Squidward so you have permission to laugh

  • Love Japan

  • With his looks he would never have made it as a car mechanic or welder.

  • cant stop playing this song

  • This is the moment I fell in love with Japan. Forgive me I was only 11 yrs old

  • @sharamsharoo ... why 'forgive' you??? there is nothing to forgive. Japan was Brilliant.

  • This is the moment I fell in love with Japn

  • brilliant

  • nice cover!

  • RIP Mick Karn Love n Hugs, nite nite XX

  • @mower6767 espescially Nick Rhodes looks exactly like Sylvian: same hair-stylist and make-up artist!

  • I don't know what it is but there's something about Sylvian in this video that reminds me of.......... the elephant man! Also how can a man of such supposedly good taste wear a bow tie?!

  • @MisAnnThorpe

I see exactly what you mean about the elephant man! Brilliant! It's the hair (from a distance looks like the big malformed head), the mouth - and all in a nice suit!

  • This hair actually makes him lookmlike the Elephant Man!

  • you can see duran duran got there infulence from.

  • i'm ugly

  • superb band and song but they dont look very Japanese to me.....am I missing something here????

  • @bc1050 it was just a name chosen out of the blue because they didnt have one in the mid 70s

  • @fiendwithoutaface66.yes but you would think that if you come from england then that would be a more appropriate name for the group assuming of course that there are no japanese members of the band which doesnt seem to be the case. It just seems so much more logical this way to me

Oh well I guess they were probabaly on drugs or something when they came up with that name or maybe even eating sushi at the time....

  • @bc1050 Mick Karn: "The name Japan was chosen in desperation. Minutes before our first appearance we realised that we should have a name. Dave suggested calling it Japan for the time being until we could think of something better. I liked it. The rest of the band didn't. But the name stuck. (The concert)... it went awful. Terrible. After the gig we virtually locked ourselves away and just rehearsed and rehearsed." (Smash Hits 29/10~11/11/81).

  • @bc1050 there was a Japanese guitarist, Masami Tsuchiya but he came in later.

  • Gee, you think they were influenced by Roxy Music at all? LOL...

  • @bradominus1 they recorded far better stuff than this

  • Can you recommend one of their albums? I'm not a Japan expert... ;)

  • @bradominus1 Quiet Life, Gentlemen Take Polaroids, and Tin Drum are the ones you should have. Their first two are very different glam rock style with some elements of what came later.

  • @bradominus1 anything with "JAPAN" on the cover hehehe

  • i thought this was duran duran!

  • @ruthroses1 nutter

  • Takes me back! This band helped me through my teens!

  • a very nice song. Never heard this song by Japan before. Also nice to see old videos from the 80s, were males were wearing lipstick and eyeliner.

  • Ive seen small countries smaller than that hair......

  • @TheTwilightalehouse that hair was all the rage in the early eighties, known as the Princess Di look tee hee hee

  • @TheTwilightalehouse i've seen big countries smaller than that hair

  • @vorpalspaz Good point,,,,,,,,great group though...

  • @TheTwilightalehouse yes, they certainly are

  • @vorpalspaz took a lot of hairspray .. believe me :)

  • i actually want to run my hand through those lucious locks...

  • @MPDEAR6060 Your comment made me LOL, as someone who lived thru that era, you couldn't have run your fingers thru his hair, thanks to hairspray, we all had heads like crash helmets!! :)

  • The nights I spent trying to get my hair to look like David's. Happy times.

  • I think Sue Ellen was jalous back then his hair look so much better..:)))

  • hahaha, yeah beautiful boys, its funny though, can you imagine all the women they had as the new romantics which they were before Duran Duran. Anyhoo, I have been to Japan, its not all thats its cracked upto be!, try Kyoto the real Japanese gardens.

  • Beautiful boys, wonderful track

  • check out rain tree crow which is sort of japan...

  • I haven't heard this since it was in the charts. What else have I missed?

  • @planetrockford , maybe you have missed the wonderfull 80s ? or maybe you were born too late ?

  • @RichardCyberPunk I was born long before this mate (late 60s) and was lucky enough to live through a great era. Some songs like this though I totally forgot ever exsisted.

  • seriously good song , loved it at school

  • I second that hairstyle.........

  • Japan for ever

  • Forever Japan!

  • Comment removed

  • @wopspee I'm 27

  • @marehtseira i was kidding

  • I second that emoticon

  • Talented, no doubt about it. Just a bit pretentious, that's all.

    Fuckin ream tune though

  • looks like nick rhodes from duran duran

  • @203361 I thnk you mean that Nick Rhodes looked/looks like him

  • when i first heard this at the time , i thought it was a new roxy music single, then i saw them on tv and sylvian looked like david bowie i knew they were the band for me. what a fabulous combination..

  • brilliant..

  • awesome..... not heard this one for years

  • Wish I could play Sax and Bass like you Mick, you will be for ever missed RIP

  • Fascinating how each member of the band in this video has his own very different style, yet each of them are uniquely elegant. The sort of eclectic, artificial, cosmopolitan world that New Wave culture in the 80s held as a promise if only we had been brave enough was just too much for the general public who were just too addicted to the drab naturalism of t-shirt and blue jeans to sustain this kind of fearless and giddy self-invention. And as it was in fashion, so it was in music.

  • @belzondium That explains why the general public usually blows hard.

  • Christ! This takes me back a bit, reminds me of when I was 14. My brother used to take the piss out of David Sylvian, cos he thought he was gay, but I think he's the BEST!!!

  • @Feisty1967 What would've been deliciously ironic is if you brother was a big fan of Queen or Judas Priest! :)

  • love this band ( will buy albums soon ) but david syvilians hair has got to be a wig no way is that natural ( just kidding ) but still ...

  • is this the same cupcake that plays keyboards for duran duran?..

  • @adebicki No, that's Nick Rhodes.

  • R.I.P. MICK KARN

  • R.I.P. Mick Karn

  • R.I.P. Mick Karn

  • It just washes over you. So easy, so uplifting, so good !

  • RIP Mick Karn

  • music rocked in the 80-s--the look was so right on for the times

  • Wow-I had vaguely heard of this group through the years

in States they were very much alternative at time meaning

they got very little if any commercial airplay.

Just learnt of his passing thru Roger Taylor-DD fb page

    RIP MIck-

David's likeness to Nick Rhodes is uncanningly eerie at best

beautiful face and beautiful straight white teeth.

I am so amazed by the amazing music that came out of UK in the early 80's some of the best music that was ever and will ever be written or produced!

  • I second that emotion ..

  • Long Live Mick. You are one bad-ass mother fucker. You will be missed.

  • RIP MICK

Made love to my first proper girl friend to this I was 18 she was 16.

Parents out, Dim lights, Cider my bedroom and Japan.

Hey Tricia - where are you now

  • RIP MICK

  • RIP MICK

  • Smokey Robinson grinned from *ear to ear* when he heard this rendition of his song! Great cover!

  • RIP Mick Khan.... x

  • Farewell Mick !

  • RIP Mick Karn

  • funny how noel fielding from the mighty boosh looks just like steve jansen

  • I agree with Mr Britjoe, Duran Duran gained some fashion tips from David Sylvian. My ex girlfriend from Norfolk's Sister used to be with the talented guy who designed most of his cool suits!!

A Japan reunion would be oh so cool......come on David, the tickets will sell out!

  • @shinysynthcity I know you aren't really insulting americans, and I consider myself a citizen of the world, but I'm from the US and I think Sylvian is cute. Also, homophobia sucks. I'm assuming you're from europe? the more I hear about europe the more I want to go there - is there less homophobia and close-mindedness there?

  • For all of the confused out there, Japan has always had a talent for detail. Reverse engineering is just another term for copying. I am going to piss you off with this next reference. The Japanese foot soldier in WWII was tantamount to an ant. With the exception of a few Pacific islands, they were to be sacrificed. The Japanese Zero was nothing more than German FW190s but without self-sealing gas tanks. Typical Japanese ego.

Smokey Robinson is owner of this sound.

  • @shinysynthcity hi i love japan add me

  • i would love to give him kisses sweet lol could someone message me i was woundering i have loved them for a long time but did david ever go out with the saxaphone player or the drummer i thought he would have gone out with the drummer please message pe and anyone who loves this band add me please i would love to chat thanks xo

  • I liked Japan too, but you guys Roxy Muisic was doing this at least 10 years before them and you can definite here the influences in there sound,

  • @MrBritjoe Oh, we all know that :) But the influence is being put to good use. And Duran Duran most definitely took a lot of cues from Japan

  • Even as a fan of David Sylvian and Japan, I'm still wondering how his voice changed so much from "Adolescent Sex" to lets say..."Tin Drum". Having said that, "Rhodesia" is still a hell of a song!

  • @singbluesilver9 Ha ha, I know, it's such a change, it's remarkable...Rhoidesia is indeed a good song....

  • @shinysynthcity Even I call it gay, and I think its awesome.

So.. if you feel like lovin' me.. if you've got that notion.. I second that emotion.

  • @shinysynthcity

david sylvian was beautiful,i'm not gay but with a guy like him, just for a night !!!

  • Japan was the first group I got into at 14, now 46-and they are good.

  • @shinysynthcity Oh well said! I second that emotion.

  • @shinysynthcity Duran Duran used to be a Japan cover band :)

  • love the hair :D

  • Fantastic version

  • @shinysynthcity Nice retort !!

  • Excellent cover, loved it when it came out and loved Japan, too much talk of what they looked like from jealous blokes with no hair, fat bellies and beards no doubt. Fact is these guys were top class musicians and played ALL their instruments, so take your blinkers off and stick that where the sun don't shine all you doubters.

  • @SteveBZ69 Hey that's me you're talkin' about !! Actually I've lost the belly and the beard.. and the hair...well...there's no gettin' that back !! Back then though, I was a make-up slathered pretty boy-thanks to Japan and a few other classy distinctive 80's bands.

  • Listening to this is like eating a Cadburys Caramel but better.

  • This is such a beautiful version of this song; its very dreamy and hypnotic, just wonderful. Japan were so debonair; do you know that the singer(David Sylvian) and the drummer(Steve Jansen) are actually brothers? How can there be so much beauty in one family????

  • HAIR!!!! big poofy hair! This musta been Japan's very early days. interesting.

  • @vutEwa didn't their hair get progressively shorter AND poofier as they went along? haha

  • @DerVampyrEngel eat shit. die slow. cunt.

  • One of the many, many, many things I love about Japan: David rocks a bowtie, without looking totally ridiculous.

  • Why trash and offend the artist? In most cases, when an artist does a cover of a song, the reason is to express his/her admiration towards the original artist/song. In David's case, we all know how he loves the Motown sound (since childhood) and has great respect for Mr Smokey Robinson. He is a fan himself!

  • I REMEMBER WANTING TO LOOK LIKE DAVE ....THEN YOUD GET LUCKY !

  • Now I have to say I love this. Thank you moodyb. I especially love Mick's pink hair.

  • Japan has to be the best 80's band ever. And David Sylvian is totally gorgeous.

  • @RawgaiaTV I know; he was beautiful, as was his brother too, Steve Jansen:) I love Mick Karn here too, his look at 2.07 and 2.32 -2.35 is just gorgeous; he looks like he looks right into your soul:)

  • @shinysynthcity the 80s were also the time cocaine was big. that might explain some of this...

  • @jimidrix5 You only attack what you fear or secretly desire. In your case I think you desire.

  • @jimidrix5 If you hate it so much, why are you watching it in the first place?

Arguing with the people who comment on this video won't get you anywhere. The people commenting on this video, myself included, are fans of Japan and their opinions won't be swayed by your insults. Why don't you spend you're time watching something you enjoy, instead of torturing yourself.

  • total Roxy Music! cool.

  • How could anyone make fun of Sylvian? Whoever has, needs to blow it out their ass. I copied his look all through high school in the 80's. He is and always will be FLAWLESS!!!!

  • @mightyguf hi im chantelle you should add me i know how u feel ppl should not give david shit i hate the ppl who do i would love to see pics of how u coppied his look xo

  • @mightyguf unfortunately the beautiful 80s are over. obviously the idea of beauty and talent now is being covered in slag tan make up and dating a footballer(slag/wag very apt rhyme) ,going on x factor killing music.

  • @MegaRapture Mate, there was just as much slag tan make up in the 80s, if not more.

There are worse things killing music, like dad rock, emo, hip hop, crappy techno clubbing music, nu metal, boring faggy boy bands, pedestrian pop music, tedious R+B warblings etc etc. The list goes on and on.

But you seem to have a tan slag wag fixation. What is it- a tanned slag stole your boyfriend, or your ex girlfriend is a tanned slag?? Yeah, I got your number. ;D

  • @mightyguf you must of looked like a complete tool, shame no one told ya!!

  • @mightyguf I think you must have looked really cool I bet loads told ya

  • @mightyguf I love their cute covers. This hair cut was hotter than the long hair on David and to this day he's still beautiful look at his pics on that website last.fm

  • @mightyguf if by "flawless" you mean walking around looking like Marianne Faithful mugged by A Flock of Seagulls, why then, yes, flawless. I love Japan/Sylvian and I think this is the best version of this song but that look should have never, never happened.

  • @mightyguf Wow if you could pull off David's look then you must have been hot back in the day!

  • @mightyguf well he is cae but i would go that far pet.

  • Tried for years to grow my hair like that, ould never quite crack it though!

  • @shinysynthcity Very eloquently put......

  • WOW!! thanks.. great! sylvian is beautiful.

  • うきゃゃ~~~っ!!シルヴィアンサマっ!ウ、美しスギマスるぅ~~ぅぅっ!

  • a girl i knew once loved these guys......she was a very quiet sweet thing....probably six months after this charted she was found on an embankment about 50 yards outside her home..... apparently her boyfriend who she was trying to dump had blown her head off.... before turning the gun on himself
