What he was saying is that you shouldn't hold people indefinately because, not only is it against the fundamental principles that the US is built upon, but it can also increase sympathy for those people and make martyrs out of them. In fact Eric Holder has some conflict of issues due to the fact his law firm he left to become AG is defending Gitmo prisoners.
