this is my favuorite movie of all time. i once wrote to craig harrison he was nice enough to write back. wow! the ending i would love to know where zac is everybody has theories ranging from religous to science. the ending never ceases to make me stare and wonder!
My initial though, when I first saw this film in the 80s, was that the effect had again taken place, and that Zac had shifted, perhaps to the place where the rest of humanity had already shifted.
It is impossible to explain the end of this movie, but we may assume the effect took place a second time which left Zac, dying in this very moment in the explosion, the last human.
Imagine! Is there some other intelligent life somewhere in the universe? We do not know. If not Zac is the only living creature left in the whole universe.
Not for long, however, since he is about to die soon ...
@rolline He is already dead (sleeping pill overdose) when he is waking up at the beginning. (According to the trailer and the campfire sequence.) In my interpretation once somebody dies, he gets a copy of the world he just left to play with and once he is ready to move on, he can do it by dieing again. Since his first death coincides in time with the executing of a military exercise in his former lab, Zac misunderstands the whole situation - and that makes the whole movie grotesque.
I remember sitting through this movie and thinking it was okay, until the last 2 minutes. Then I couldn't get out of my seat even after all the credits had rolled, I was so stunned by the beautiful ending. Truly a hidden gem!
After read the comments juts want to say how it is that some people want talk about themselves everytime it's possible, telling how important is their job, how smart they are and all of this...
But regarding the movie, it's one of the best 10 for me. Awesome ending.
The ending is indeed open to inerpretation, which is a great thing.
I always felt that there were two possibilities. The first is that he is dead and this is heaven or something like that, or as seems more likely, he managed to die again at the exact moment of the 'effect' and so was saved.
Unfortunbately for Zac, he is now most likely to be the last human alive, as the chances of dying twice at the exact moment of the effect are ridiculous.
The situation that zac finds himself in is inconsequential to whether he is on a moon of Saturn or not. The scene is to convey a notion of ambiquity to the theme. The Saturn-like planet represents the ancient Greek mythical God Saturnus, who was deposed by New Gods Dis and Jove (Jupiter). Zac's "obliteration" from the Earth represents the complete extinction of homo-sapien man (rational, sometimes reasoning scientist that he was,) with the two irrational beings (Joanne and Api) surviving.
this is one of the most weirdest movies I've ever seen, but still superior of I am Legend or 28 days later, though, those movies have different kind of plot. But I love this movie anyway.
Yes, it is Saturn, the deal was that physical laws and spacetime were so fucked up by the second event now a moon or wherever it is near saturn is habitable.
Probably in another dimension where earth's, or that universe's physics and planets are different from ours... since the clouds formation and look, and the Saturn looking planet looks totally wild. Reminds me of those spray paint artists that make a living from making their art work look like out of this world. Makes one wonder, what possible dimensions there are...
When the effect takes place for the 2nd time, the main character dies the 2nd time, and then the earth is even shifted farer away. Now, next to Saturn. And the man is now completely alone. Earth has become Quiet Earth and his device in which he has spoken is meaningless.
I don't fully comprehend this ending. Yeah it was cool and all but why did he end up on a moon in a different part of the universe? Also was it just him? Was he able to transmit himself to a second (technically third) stage because he died again?
@YouMockMe I think this is the best part of the movie - it leaves one with so many unanswered questions. The movie has haunted me since I was a kid. One of my all time favorites.
I will never forget seeing this scene for the first time. I about died of shock, I was sitting there in sheer jaw-dropped awestruck silence. I never saw it coming, it was brilliant. One of the greatest Sci Fi endings ever. Sheer genius. I rewound and watched it about 25 times.
One of the best Sci-Fi movies ever made, with one of the best soundtracks to boot. The cinematography was fantastic as well, as NZ lends itself to beautiful shots.
I saw this film in the theater when it first came out and found it to be a thought-provoking, and compelling sci-fi film. The soundtrack is beautiful and haunting -- perfectly reflecting the mood of the film. It's unfortunate that the film didn't get the critical acclaim that it deserved.
The ending is cool, of course, but that's not supposed to be Saturn. What Zac is on is a habitable moon around an extrasolar ringed planet like Saturn. None of Saturn's moons is habitable by humans.
@unbelievablesuccess Both are right, I would like to add that astronomars now call any large gas extrasolar planet as a Juptiter and so any giant gas planet with rings, would be called a Saturn.
Well, besides what I said earlier about uninhabitability, the entire scene is impossible: We see the side of the rising "Saturn", yet the moon that Zac is on is in daylight. That is not possible since the "sun" must be on the opposite side of that moon. Even reflected light from "Saturn" is insufficient to cause the daylight - it was "day" on the moon even before "Saturn" rose. It's a great scene; just astrophysically impossible.
I need to correct myself. The "sun" is right above because we see that in the very beginning of the scene. However, the way that "Saturn" is lit is still wrong given the location of the "sun". "Saturn appears as if the "sun" is off screen to the right, but we already know it is above. So, again, the scene is still impossible,.
Actually its very possible in Sci Fi. I think you are looking at this as if its "real", its Sci Fi, anything is possible. So why would it be impossible for the universe to be altered and causing a scene like this? You seem to forget....he has thrown the universe out of wack once already. This was another incident where he altered the universe, yet again.
That's the difference between good scifi and, say, unicorns and elves and dragons. Even in scifi, 1 + 1 = 2. If you don't have that, then you have sh*t. So, in a nutshell, you have to draw a line in scifi. The key is that scifi discusses the raminifactions of the possible, but it never advocates the clearly impossible. However, if it makes you happy, I'll say that perhaps the lighting is such that the scene is plausible.
Again....its sci fi.....You just compared Sci Fi to "Fantasy Element"...unicorns and Elves? That has nothing to do with sci fi. In fact, Piss poor comparison my friend. You clearly over-analyze things and seem to be looking for something to complain about. No need to make me happy, already happy. Make yourself happy...........
Hey, I just want to say that I love the movie and think the seen is awesome. That doesn't make it realistic though - even from an SF perspective. You understanding of SF is in doubt. Feel free to view Lord of the Rings as SF as well.
BTW, yes, I do overanalyze things. It's my job; I verify that aircraft software works properly so people don't die. Would you get on board an aircraft that uses Microsoft? So, be thankful that there are folks like me who are worried about folks like you.
I work in the military and work for special investigations in the air force. Sorry you can use that excuse for overanalyzing all you want. I dont have to be thankful to you for aircraft software.....you dont work on the planes i fly on.
Because you analyze software for aircraft...doesnt mean you should ridiculously overanalyze a film thats entertainment. Two different things.......
Still never answered why you decided to bring your personal business in this. And again you work on some USAF, not all. I dont still dont know what you are getting at. You feel guilty about overanaylzing a sci fi movie...so you decided to try and make things personal?
This is like the age old argument that Star Wars is a bad science fiction movie because there was no sound in space. Sometimes you just don't think of these things, we can't all be like kubrick and be exact to science. I guess it was just something he didn't notice when filming. It is however still an incredible scene and if questioned about it he'd probably use the universe is altered and now there's two suns or something, i dunno?
@ALEXXX1992 - yes, it is an incredible scene, and probably was meant simply to suggest that the universe (or zac) was changed in some profound way. and it succeeded at that.
as far as star wars goes - it wasn't a bad movie because of the sound effects. it was a simplistic adventure story that dealt with none of the big questions addressed by great science fiction (which frustrated a lot of science fiction fans). but it was a good adventure story.
I prefer to think of it as Zac being shifted into another alternate Earth where Saturn is simply a planet neighboring Earth, part of the inner solar system, and not that he is on a moon of Saturn. Any gas giant would be throwing out lethal radiation that would make any of its moons uninhabitable.
And given the size and proximity of the planet coupled with the rapidity of the moon's rotation he is most certainly about to die, as the tides will soon overwhelm him...
