I first heard this song on John Denver's "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" album. My friend and I argued whether it was a song to a baby or a lover. We saw him perform at the Dane County Expo Center in 1973 and in his introduction he said "both". Mary's version is definitely more of a lullaby to a child and very beautiful.
Wow -- Mary Travers is the freak'in "mom" mtRNA|DNA to Gisel Bündchen, among the recent decade's mega-top-dollar-paid fashions models ever...whereas, many contemporaneous critics et al narrow thinkers, discounted Mary's "strong looks" as, at best, a cruder version of the "Julie Christie school of peroxide-locks"; whereas, in retrospect--at least for newer generations--review of the ubber-graphical stagings, w/high-key lighting, proves my salient point. Not my type, but lookers all the same!
In my world this is the most beautiful song sung by the most beautiful lady and brings a tear to my eye each time I listen - Mary will always be missed!
Mary was someone I never knew or ever met, but I grew up with her songs in the 60's and her passing leaves a hole in my heart that even now still wont go away! Such a beautiful beautiful voice, in such a beautiful person, such a loss to humanity.
Mary sang this song more touching than John Denver, even though the song was written by him. It got so much feeling there that when you think of your love ones who has grown up now and is away from, it will certainily bring tears into your eyes and remember the olden times when they are only a few years old. ! A great Lady, great Artist, and a great song to remember!
I heard this song in the mid '60's when John Denver was John Deuseldorff. When I heard Mary sing it, I bought a guitar and learned this beautiful lullaby, just the way she sang it. I sang it to my firstborn every night when we tucked her in. Now, when we get together we sing it Mary's way, only this time we sing it to her four children.
@bigal6868 - Your comment was so beautiful. What a lovely legacy of music for your daughter and now her four children. Mary must be smiling down from heaven.
This song was originally written by JD for a friend's baby, and originally titled "For Baby For Bobby", and was magical when John sang it. It became even more special when Mary sang it for her granddaughter. RIP Mary. RIP John. We love(d) you both.
@DaveysMom I thought that too, but it was actually written for a girlfriend he had before Annie. She was called Bobbie. (according to Take Me Home; his autobiography) .
When Mary sang this to her Grand Daughter "wiley" my heart melted not only for her grand daughter, but, for her daughter's as well. Heaven won't ever want for music again.....Mary is home.
Have always loved this song, both Mary Travers' and John Denver's versions. My best friend and I had an ongoing argument about this song: I insisted it was a lullabye and she insisted it was a love song. The answer came at a 1973 John Denver concert when he introduced it and said that it is really both!
I wrote to the women this song was particularly written about (Bobbie Wargo J.) and that was such a wonderful thing after loving the song for so many years and wondering about the mystery lady behind it. She is indeed a specia lady and she continued to always hold John dear in her heart. Sometimes attending his concerts.
I had always invisioned her as a quiet blond and though later she had darker hair, she explained that she was indeed a blond when the song was written for her :) Mary sang it for her daughter (Baby) while John sang it for his girlfriend (Bobbie)....thus we ended up with it eventually being called "For Baby (For Bobbie).
I heard Mary sing this song when I was teenager. I was taken with it, even more than John Denver's version. I sang it in a coffee house, then to my daughters, and now to my grandkids.
Thank you for posting this song. I think it is really beautiful, and have been playing it in my car for days now. Mary seems to put her whole heart into the lyrics.

I remember that. In fact, when Mary died, I rented that video and showed that performance to the whole family.
