i like the dress :) Also watched your video on addiction which was good too particularly at 12mins 30 when you adjusted the frame :)
On a serius note I understand where you coming from with this vid since i have AS and your neuroscience / behavioural science vids are very interesting.
Please do more with the frame set right - they're very interesting and educational at the same time.
My best friend has been going to counseling and receiving medication (untill he decided to go off the meds) for Schizophrenia. He discovered recently Dr Hoffer's Niacin Treatment, on Youtube, Now he has ordered a book by Hoffer. But Honestly, I dont think you have any real issues. I think you understand relatively well. I do the same things like make fun of myself. I say this because I wish that I could walk around in a world with nothing but ones like you, then I would have better chances.
this was a great video.....keep it up...I enjoyed the differences but has anyone ever thought that maybe we are all alike cause they are a lot of NT's out there that actually are closet aspies LOL Some people just want to think they are normal but really who or what is normal in this day and age cause if 90 percent of the population has some sort of mental illness than really who is normal who?????? No one LOL Love it
It sucks that people have to 'act' different to fit in with society, people different than society make up so much of the beauty in the world, and not to mention the really cool inventions we have!
I agree, to an extent. It depends on what 'fit in with society' means. If it means not being antisocial (violent, etc) then it's a good thing. But when it comes to having some odd and eccentric behaviours, so what? Why should we have to change who we are if it doesn't hurt others?
I dress nicely, and that is about it. I just do what what makes me feel comfortable. I do have a verbal filter, so i don't say the wrong things to people i just met. To me, the costs outweigh the benefits when I "play the game" and I think it is unfair that we have to do it. I know people are capable of more acceptance, because my high school is unbelievably open minded.
Yeah, it's true. It's unfair, but that's life. For example, sure, you can go to that job interview in the garbage bag for lulz, but you have the choice: a decent attempt at getting the job vs self expression or what have you (but the win situation is when they find that funny and hire you for that :P).
The thing about job interviews is that they only last an hour or two. You are right, sometimes it is worth it to sacrifice your individuality for that time frame. Or you can choose to interview over the phone like Temple Grandin did.
However, having to commit to a mask every day at work or school can be too stressful for some people. When people get denied or fired from jobs for irrelevant things like this, it is called a glass ceiling. It once affected women and African Americans as well.
I hope by the time my daughter gets to your age, that people like you would have made this world a kinder place for her. You are paving the way...keep it up.
It can be helpful in the short term when dealing with people you don't know. However, feeling obligated to do so whenever out of your house, I think that is too much and unnecessary.
I LOVE this! This is exactly what I am talking about. I have studied ad nauseum the brain, psychology, I should understand why people look at me strangely, but I don't. I don't have any idea how to pass as normal. I don't think there is such a thing frankly
YOU GO GIRL! LOL. Great vid. I'm a US citizen female self-diagnosed Aspie. I can relate to you more than any NT could ever know! GIRL NERDS UNITE! My husband is super normal, but I think it helps me drastically get by in life by giving me direction/helping me be more resposible and understand the NT world better. I feel I have to "fake it" a lot around normals but I don't care about what people think about me & I know I'm smarter than your average guy which helps me have confidence.
i think if you hang out with kind of an edgy crowd, AS characteristics either don't matter, or can even be applauded as being slightly "outrageous," and it works well. but now i'm older and trying to fit into recovery circles. (trying to heal from the ptsd due to repeated abuse and early bullying!) the social rules in recovery circles are pretty specific and pretty strict. i'm getting kind of tired of all the uproar because i have such a difficult time figuring out social conventions.
i seem forever to have my foot in my mouth, getting booted out of situations, etc.. at this point, i wouldn't mind learning a little small talk, etc., etc.
i think your attitude is fun, and if it works well for now--i say go for it. unfortunately, later, it tends to make things difficult. i'm certainly not proud to "pass" (even if, at this point, i could.) but i'm still who i am at the core, whether i learn eye contact, small talk, "appropriate" behavior or not.
In the sense that I haven't been diagnosed with any form of autism or developmental disorder, no.
As for having the traits... I couldn't call myself an NT either. The 'restricted, repetitive interests' are there, and stimming. But the impairment of social skills... I really can't judge myself because what I have been diagnosed with is social anxiety.
I guess I'd answer 'I don't know, but I'm not an NT either' :)
Hey one thing I can't understand is how you have managed to go over the 10 min barrier that youtube puts on all videos. Thats amazing I wish you would tell me the secret take care :)
Sorry, I forgot to answer this question, and just remembered :P
Anyway, when youtube came out, you had to apply for a 'directors account' which let you post as long as you like, provided your video was under 200meg or whatever. They thought this would stop people from posting copy righted stuff without hindering those who want to post their own creations and vlogs.
About one or two years ago, they changed it, and made other types of director accounts, like comedian, guru, etc [cont]
You don't apply for these, you just chose it, but they put the 10 minute restriction back on. But to be fair, anyone that created a directors account before that date (such as myself and other people who can post long videos) could keep the unlimited time.
Yeah, some things are just not worth it. Why bother trying to fit in with people who wouldn't really accept you any way? And then there is moderation. For example, at a job interview you don't have to show them how much you like to cut (actually, I'd like to see their faces if someone randomly did that :P) but why should you stop it *just* because someone else tells you that you should?
Yeah, I remember my first experience with a group of nerds - back in my highschool days going to an IT summer school camp thing. Basically what is normal and acceptable just resets in a new subculture. But the way social interactions worked stayed the same. Within that week, a pecking order had already established and people exuding others, even if it is for reasons different to what I was used to (who cares if you're good at sport/look good, if you're an IT nub, you're out)
None of the previous videos showed you with prescription glasses. Now you have them too. Academia and research does that to you. Or is it something else?
Lol! I used to have bifocal glasses, but I hated those and never wore them. I'm short sited but not blind. Now I'm trying to get my license, I need glasses to drive legally, so I got some new ones :)
It has nothing to do with trying to look cool... nothing...
I also think "nerd" is a bit of a misnomer because it's generally defined as "someone who is socially inept with a propensity to technology". They've clearly never been to Penny Arcade Expo because a lot of socializing happens there. A lot of socializing happens on WoW too. People with similar propensities. Wear the Nintendo shirt.
Aspergers has been labeled 'the geek symdrome', but it's not 100%, as as you said, those called nerds, etc are just as social and can read people just fine.
For example, my uni has a large group of us who are into video games, fantasy and table top roleplaying. The social problem simply lies at the interests. Someone might talk about clubbing, then the other person is talking about lanning and really don't find the other person interesting.
It's a win-lose scenario essentially. In the quest to "find themselves" or establish an identity people want to associate themselves with a social class. This may not be the case for everyone, but some people want to feel like they belong and achieve that by establishing themselves as part of a sub-culture. Then the dynamics of group-polarization help steer that person to further extremes. Flaws in our society which you can defect from but you will never really "fit in".
In regards to Autism Spectrum Disorder and Neurotypicals. It's the same thing quaint little names for a generalization. "Spectrum" suggests a gradualism from "normalcy" to florid "autism". Then what the fuck is "normal"? Having two legs and walking upright is pretty abnormal to put it in perspective. The masses are ignorant and use simplistic notions as a framework for perceiving reality. Its the nature of the brain to differentiate the world and work out natural order. A lot of brains are wrong
You are very perceptive Nervous. You are well beyond the simple concepts society consists of by and large. I also find social dynamics confusing and illusive. I'd much rather discuss the effect of gloucocorticoids than the weather, but I'm in the same boat and I'm not a neuroscientist, I'm a Lan/Desktop guy. But anyway sounds like a simplistic and flawed social system when people are categorized and generalized with quaint little names like "nerds" and "jocks". Seems pretty narrow-minded.
youre a fkn neurologist for c sake .. why give a shit about the proles with their well oiled reptile brains...unhindered by a frontal cortec to think twice before speaking shit which conforms to " normality " one should also take into consideration that the human race is fucked up n u need to be fucked up to conform....wisdom from a bottle
She's referring to a popular game called World of Warcraft in which you can take part in raids with other people to fight powerful enemies in dungeons. She reckons defeating such a 'boss' is better than an orgasm.
Lol, for most people an orgasm *should* be pretty damn good, but the point was basically that I'm so not interested that everything else out there is better. I guess it's kind of like food tasting better when you're hungry, not as good, but okay when you're full. So, I'm always full.

Society created people like pekka eric and Matti Saari.
introverted people are left behind in a extroverted business society.

What do you say is better than an orgasm?
In general, you might have a point there if you think of sex as the monkey/rabbit business it is made into in the Western world.
However, I am quite sure that there are some masters of Tantra and stuff that might think totally different.
As an aside: the fact that you're an asexual makes your cleavage even more distracting.
