The old elephant barn is from 1938 and is considered a local landmark. The exhibit was slightly enlarged in 1979 but the girls are getting a new, much larger place in the near future. They get plenty of exercise though. Before the zoo opens and after closing, their keepers take them for a long walk around the zoo and let them forage from the trees and shrubs.
Panya and Jean. Two long-time residents of Audubon Zoo in New Orleans enjoying their daily bath. Since things have settled down since Katrina, plans are underway for a new, much larger elephant exhibit. Hopefully, ground-breaking will be soon!
It looks like the elephants in the Audubon Zoo have a good home, too!
