  • Half a million dollars to make Jabba? All that money went to waste when they brought out the CGI -_-

  • he never done the stop motion for Jabba, just another computer image -_-

  • Comment removed

  • why why why . replace miss snooty with that ridiculouse CGI . and replace the music with something completely different . i hate CGI . it´s fake fake fake .it´s not there

  • why didn't george use the fat guy instead of a fat ass snail?

  • The Muppets take Jabba's at 4:26

  • The evolution of movie creature development... to think, only ten years after JEDI, along comes JURASSIC PARK... several years more, all that development was blown to hell with CGI Jabba :P

  • For me the biggest advantage of cgi is virtual sets. It gives a lot more freedom in filmmmaking than the old matte paintings.

  • The Making of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

    *shows guy at computer*

  • Wow, these guys are actually making creatures that look REAL. Too bad computers still can't do that.

  • I like that music they play while they're making the puppets!

  • wow 14 years later that fat man with fur became digital jabba. how would people watching this vid know it. will it happens to us with unseen footage with the next ten rerereleases lucas is waiting to sell?¿

  • 0:52 HOLY SHIT I AM WITNESSING THE BIRTH OF AKBAR

  • i always wished salacious crumb was like that instead of the laughing bastard he is in the movie. now that would make an edition special for me

  • What an exciting time it must been to be a special effects artist. I would love to go back in time and just wander around the ILM creature shop while these movies were being made.

  • "I hope it's Raiders!"

  • 4:36 - Joh Yowza!

  • HA HA! very true statement - however the one inspired thing I thought was- the clone trooper . -a nice homage to the ancient greek warrior!

  • That original "static" Sy Snootles puppet was so much better (and far less annoying) than that stupid CGI version in the special edition.

  • There should be more balance between cgi and animatronics ... these days they tend to overdo it with the cgi .... it's probably cheaper and easier than making real sets and using robotics and puppets ... But it makes a film more interesting and less boring

  • I still have this on VHS recorded back in 84 off of TV, my copy has loads of dropouts, yours has none, wow where'd you get your source it's amazing.

    thanks

  • @musicforindies

I found mine at Half Price Books (used). Your best bet aside from eBay or Amazon is used movie and book stores which sells VHS tapes. It was released along with the original trilogy on VHS sometime in the early 90's.

  • when they went back to re-mastering a New Hope the scene with Jabba was added back in but he was CGI in that one !

  • return of the jedi was the first star wars movie i saw at age four. the creatures of jabba's palace always excited me then and still do now!

  • kill that troll dokken447! >:(

    feed him to rancor!

  • lack of coherent story, proper development of characters and a complicated multiplication of endings made the prequels crap! Avatar was a way better movie despite using many cliches! of course Empire Strikes back rules!

  • @yobolion really? Avatar, a good movie?! That was the most boring, most slow paced, most blatantly political film I've ever seen and was HORRID!

  • @gamephreak5 it wasnt political unlike the prequals it was more adventure in a beutiful worldehynwipjd'po]ju89h-aernbvpfbgr03wfuckyouewqhrfou43qibf

  • I love watching documentaries about film-making, especially Star Wars.

  • @dokken447

    uhhhh no

  • @dokken447, are you MAD ????

  • Star wars had the best set of puppets. CGI is what ruined the prequels.

  • @linkfan160 I agree, they used way to much CGI in the prequels, but not as much as you think, at least not in revenge of the sith. Most of the cgi looking stuff in Ep 3 was actually props, like the lava planet scene. But I agree they still should have used less CGI.

  • Duke Nukem Pigs

  • this stuff was more realistic then CGI crap

  • Come on, why isn't this included in the DVD set? :/

  • @10laughungtears because you have to buy everything seperately, thats starwars marketing :P

  • all those lyrics, wasted

  • Hollywood needs to bet back to these days. Computer generated effects are great but If you can create the same thing for real that's the way is should be done. Even if it doesn't look as good and/or is more expensive to build the audience knows it's real and appreciates it more.

  • @SolidSnake032486 No, because then movies will become more expensive and wil loke less good and I actualy like it ore when I know it`s CGI and so do a li of people it are kmostly older people that don`t like change that like real organic matters!!

  • What ever happened to that fat bastard that played Jabba the Hut in that deleted (unfinished) scene form Star Wars?

  • @omenroc1

In 1996, he was replaced with a CGI model of Jabba for the "Special Edition" (1997)

  • 2:20 he looks like a vulture!

  • That's so cool... Salacious Crumb speaks Galactic Basic!!

  • So what is the music playing in the background. maybe the rarest Star wars find for me?

  • @mrdjjames Yes it's REALLY rare. It's called Max Rebo Band Jam. It's on youtube.

  • Incriminating evidence against George at 2:51

  • @NorvenLeverone ----What do you mean? incriminating as in, he is lying? I know he is full of crap, what do you mean, like how he said he always had that new guy as the singer always in mind?

  • hello in tv land!!

  • Can anyone tell me the title of the music playing behind this feature?

  • Comment removed

  • Pan Am!? That's the most retro thing about this video.

  • I wonder why they don't simply re-record the opening song from this clip; I know the masters are gone forever (or so they say), but certainly the sheet music still exists somewhere? Definitely one of the best songs in all of Star Wars (at the very least, the best of the Jabba songs).

  • aww man CGI must have been an insult to all those artists, maybe if nowadays movie had a 50/50 with organic models and CGI, i mean they would use CGI only if it was totally impossible to do the scene with models, after watching this it makes me feel how those artists must have felt when everything just went to 3d

  • It`s a shame the unsync audio/video on this clip

  • It's a shame the first track has never been released. Well, they did release it on the soundboards a while ago, so there may be a chance they're gonna release it...

  • all the stuff those artists used to do. now it's all computerized...

  • I still have my old VHS copy of this purchased sometime in the late 80's. I love the personal look and feel of these old making-of docs rather than the way they're done today.

  • I love the shot at 4:11 of the people in the masks/gloves clapping and moving to the song. That kills me everytime!!!

  • i wanna hear the english version of that song!!

  • XD

It's like an unaired episode of the Muppets!

  • i hope soon theyll be a backlash against cgi and directors move back to more organic sets and characters

  • another George "blooper" :P Jabba having 2 identities

  • star wars lives on, Pan Am doesn't.

  • Those guys look like they had great fun in the creature shop!

  • @WolfmanNougat i'd want that job!

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved this song and would love to get a copy of it!

  • The "Hutt-ese" version of the Jabba's Palace song is on the original Soundtrack and CD release.

  • its not the same one as used on the original movie

  • I don't think it is the same arrangement as in the film, nor is it the English version in the making of, but the original song "sung" in Jedi is on the original soundtrack... the 80's version. Not the newer CD releases or the Special Edition soundtracks.

The track is called Lapti Nek (by Jabba's Palace Band). If that is the song you are looking for.

  • Nope, the original movie version of the song (in huttese) and the english version have never been released.

  • I would love to have worked in that creature shop.

  • CGI seems so boring nowadays, you sit on your ass 16 hrs a day, and your eyes fall out of your head, and when youre done there nothing to leave to a museum or show anybody

    !

  • Yup, exactly, and slickness doesn't make for good entertainment. It used to be peopel would wonder, "how did they DO that?"

Now everyone knows, so there's no mystery or magic, just the next CGI blockbuster and a bored modern audience who will never what they've missed.

  • It lacks emotion!

    Too fluid and dull!

  • @will4ward I just love both styles, the idea of just using bluescreen and being able to turn any idea inti reality is great, aslso it allows for bigger scopes better effects an d crazier stuff, and iit makes that movies are cheaper and come out quicker, but I have to admitreal stuff is grrest too, it just both rocks, some movies should be made with real stuff an d some weith CGI, who agrees??? Both rock, thumb up if you agree??????

  • @reviewreviewer1 - you are correct anything is possible wijth CGI,

both will be used - I just find it more fun to plau with real toys-

check out the "making of blade runner" special edition the breajdown of vfx.

  • @will4ward Oke I will, and you`re right, both forms are great both should exist, like rock n roll, and clasic music.

  • @will4ward i agree , avatar is an exception though.

  • @will4ward, couldn't agree more.

  • @will4ward !00 % true, but do you really want anything from the prequels to be in a museum?

  • @will4ward It's just as legitimate an art form as miniature modelling. It's more cost effective and in most cases nowadays, looks far better and is more flexible. I'm sorry you want to live in a nostalgic past, but you'll be happier if you just learn to deal with it.

  • @will4ward I dont mind the CGI. I am just bothered that everything else is given little thought. Look at transformers, CGI galore and nutting else.

  • @cassius969 You must be from a generation where they cared about story and character.

Just watched ST "Wrath of Khan" now thats an engaging story! -.I forgot about the great FX and enjoyed the movie!!!!!!

  • @will4ward People still care about story and character. How many people above the age of 12 are amazed at transformers? It does not have to be Oscarlike, but there needs to be some storytelling along with the FX. Avatar didnt have the most unique story but at least it had one.

  • @will4ward wrath of khan? u must be from the star trek nerd generation? wat a shit load of boring crap lol

  • @cassius969 i contemplated killing myself because i was not allowed to leave theatre in between(after the 1st 10 minutes)

  • @sdf227 After you saw what prime looked like?

  • that rat-creature at 5:05 -> should have had a leading role ! its so cool

imagine chewbacca replaced by this guy, star wars would be a peak more funny ;)

  • ha they translated it from english into Jaba's native tongue...

  • This is the same song you hear in episode 3 , at jabba's place... I NEED THIS SONG , sooo groovy!!!

  • in ep. 3 when

  • The guy who stood in for Jabba for the first movie is Declan Mulholland. He played one of Robin Hood's robbers in "Time Bandits", which also starred Kenny Baker .(R2-D2)

  • thanks buddy.. haven't seen this in years..

  • there was so much more art and creativity in the puppets than in cgi which produced digital vomit if anything - which also partly explains the superiority of the first trilogy.

  • I would love to see puppets make their way back into a Lucasfilm. I admire Lucas for pushing cgi in terms of what it's capable of doing. The cgi insertion of Jabba probably wasn't necessary, but you can see that it was to prove that technology can make our wildest dreams come true. That is to say, our imaginations are the only real limit.

Still though, I miss the puppets. They're so darn cute!

  • I have Lapti Nek on CD sung by Meco, but the english version is entitled "FANCY MAN" I wish they would release it

  • I love the crates scene where the puppets pack themselves for England.

"Hey, anyone know what the in-flight movie is? Oh, I hope it's rated - ARRAAH!"

    XD

  • the scene at 7:18 was removed from the original but later appeared at the special edition..

  • is that George running with the rest of the gang at 1.27?

  • Now this is Movie Magic, not use with computers at all

  • psychatric help 1:40

LOL and then they are all running classic

    i miss star wars...im only 15 and i love the original movies./

    haha

    "hello in tv land"

  • limewire is illigal same with frostwire

  • its on youtube

  • Some of those puppets would command a fortune on Ebay these days.

  • Really?

  • maby limewire

  • Does anyone know where I can get the original song in Jabba's palace? The one Snoodles sings.

  • Yes, check out Ebay or used CD stores, etc. and look for the box set STAR WARS TRILOGY released in 1993. 4 CDS in all. Disc 4 has the song: "Lapti Nek".

  • 1:23 Strange.

  • this is amazing

  • At 1:23, what is that girl doing?

  • Thanks you so much, I love this doc. God I miss the old ILM... Yeah this thing has my favorite Lucas quote. It'ss guided me on my journey into FX and Animation, and ultimatly makes me so sad when I see what's happened to SW, ILM and the whole Lucasfilm Legacy... "A special effect without a story is a very boring thing" oh George, truer words were never spoken old friend... we miss you.

  • During the pan shot of all the creature models in the beginning - there's a creature in the center that looks like a Ferengi from Star Trek.

  • lol those muppets are awesome

  • WHOA - the music that is being played in the background from the beginning until 2:37 is the only piece from the movie that has never been released on any of the different editions of the soundtrack (this music is a long version of the 'jam' played by the Max Reebo band while Chewie is being lead to the dungeon in "Return of the Jedi"). Anyone know whats up with that?

  • yeah thats wierd. i've been looking for that sail barge funk music for a long time, everyone says the master tapes where lost and the music was gone...well?

  • As I remember the 'tapes' of that music were used by the documentary makers then lost, forever. JD

  • crap

  • cool

  • I LOVE ILM!!

  • LOL Lucas chased by Gamorreon. Love it.

  • whats the name of the song in the beginning?

  • Papboer16:

I have been asking this question for 25 years... Someone once told me it was not released on any album and was forgotten about
