The evolution of movie creature development... to think, only ten years after JEDI, along comes JURASSIC PARK... several years more, all that development was blown to hell with CGI Jabba :P
wow 14 years later that fat man with fur became digital jabba. how would people watching this vid know it. will it happens to us with unseen footage with the next ten rerereleases lucas is waiting to sell?¿
What an exciting time it must been to be a special effects artist. I would love to go back in time and just wander around the ILM creature shop while these movies were being made.
There should be more balance between cgi and animatronics ... these days they tend to overdo it with the cgi .... it's probably cheaper and easier than making real sets and using robotics and puppets ... But it makes a film more interesting and less boring
I found mine at Half Price Books (used). Your best bet aside from eBay or Amazon is used movie and book stores which sells VHS tapes. It was released along with the original trilogy on VHS sometime in the early 90's.
lack of coherent story, proper development of characters and a complicated multiplication of endings made the prequels crap! Avatar was a way better movie despite using many cliches! of course Empire Strikes back rules!
@linkfan160 I agree, they used way to much CGI in the prequels, but not as much as you think, at least not in revenge of the sith. Most of the cgi looking stuff in Ep 3 was actually props, like the lava planet scene. But I agree they still should have used less CGI.
Hollywood needs to bet back to these days. Computer generated effects are great but If you can create the same thing for real that's the way is should be done. Even if it doesn't look as good and/or is more expensive to build the audience knows it's real and appreciates it more.
@SolidSnake032486 No, because then movies will become more expensive and wil loke less good and I actualy like it ore when I know it`s CGI and so do a li of people it are kmostly older people that don`t like change that like real organic matters!!
@NorvenLeverone ----What do you mean? incriminating as in, he is lying? I know he is full of crap, what do you mean, like how he said he always had that new guy as the singer always in mind?

aww man CGI must have been an insult to all those artists, maybe if nowadays movie had a 50/50 with organic models and CGI, i mean they would use CGI only if it was totally impossible to do the scene with models, after watching this it makes me feel how those artists must have felt when everything just went to 3d
It's a shame the first track has never been released. Well, they did release it on the soundboards a while ago, so there may be a chance they're gonna release it...
I still have my old VHS copy of this purchased sometime in the late 80's. I love the personal look and feel of these old making-of docs rather than the way they're done today.
I don't think it is the same arrangement as in the film, nor is it the English version in the making of, but the original song "sung" in Jedi is on the original soundtrack... the 80's version. Not the newer CD releases or the Special Edition soundtracks.
The track is called Lapti Nek (by Jabba's Palace Band). If that is the song you are looking for.
CGI seems so boring nowadays, you sit on your ass 16 hrs a day, and your eyes fall out of your head, and when youre done there nothing to leave to a museum or show anybody
@will4ward I just love both styles, the idea of just using bluescreen and being able to turn any idea inti reality is great, aslso it allows for bigger scopes better effects an d crazier stuff, and iit makes that movies are cheaper and come out quicker, but I have to admitreal stuff is grrest too, it just both rocks, some movies should be made with real stuff an d some weith CGI, who agrees??? Both rock, thumb up if you agree??????
@will4ward It's just as legitimate an art form as miniature modelling. It's more cost effective and in most cases nowadays, looks far better and is more flexible. I'm sorry you want to live in a nostalgic past, but you'll be happier if you just learn to deal with it.
@will4ward People still care about story and character. How many people above the age of 12 are amazed at transformers? It does not have to be Oscarlike, but there needs to be some storytelling along with the FX. Avatar didnt have the most unique story but at least it had one.
The guy who stood in for Jabba for the first movie is Declan Mulholland. He played one of Robin Hood's robbers in "Time Bandits", which also starred Kenny Baker .(R2-D2)

Yes, check out Ebay or used CD stores, etc. and look for the box set STAR WARS TRILOGY released in 1993. 4 CDS in all. Disc 4 has the song: "Lapti Nek".
Thanks you so much, I love this doc. God I miss the old ILM... Yeah this thing has my favorite Lucas quote. It'ss guided me on my journey into FX and Animation, and ultimatly makes me so sad when I see what's happened to SW, ILM and the whole Lucasfilm Legacy... "A special effect without a story is a very boring thing" oh George, truer words were never spoken old friend... we miss you.
WHOA - the music that is being played in the background from the beginning until 2:37 is the only piece from the movie that has never been released on any of the different editions of the soundtrack (this music is a long version of the 'jam' played by the Max Reebo band while Chewie is being lead to the dungeon in "Return of the Jedi").
