Its clear to me threw out the whole Love story, the only one for Robert was Anna and vise versa if not for the original betrayal neither would of looked anywhere else they were ment for eachother.
I don't think it was circumstances, I'm pretty sure having watched through the entire 80's that the fans wanted Robert with Holly and then Duke with Anna. Had those 2 not "died," I don't think they would have ever gotten back together.
As a fan and viewer from 80-92, I can't say that I always wanted R with H and D with A. I can say that I liked how R loved and was faithful to H throughout their marriage, but I can't say that I never questioned (during the 80's) why R&A didn't get together when their "singleness" provided the opportunity. When they did, it did make perfect sense to me.
Anna & Robert were each other's true love; physically, emotionally and even their professional life. circumstances kept them from hooking up again for awhile but with the looks and actions they always exchanged we always knew they were made for each other and would one day be together.
Pisces516973 - I totally agree with you. Robert and Anna had a deep connection made even deeper by the child they created out of their love. Plus the fact that both of them protected the other fiercely because of their love. They must have wondered what life would have been had they not broken up. Would they have had more children...

IMHO, even though he was physically faithful to Holly, Robert remained deeply attached to Anna and Robin emotionally,
Most wives would be disturbed by that, even if they understood it intellectually.
