Thin Lizzy deserve all credit for writing this wonderful song BUT Smashing Pumpkins got it spot on...the mood on the Pumpkins version suits the song way better !!! Seldom is a cover version better than the original but it's certainly the case here !!!

I loved Smashing Pumpkins long before I got into Thin Lizzy, but I much prefer the Thin Lizzy version. Billy's off key here quite a bit. Just don't care for the arrangement.

I hear the Thin Lizzy version, and I hear a man living in a very jeux d'viv sort of way, no troubles to bring him down, everything's groovy.

I hear this version, and I hear a very different story of the same guy. He's living in the moment, but knows that it can't last forever, so this moment is bittersweet, that tomorrow may mean that everything will be gone.

Someone like this version, some the other. To show personal opinion is ok. To rank it make no sense. I think it's nice to hear various cover versions and how new interpretations can be made.Sound evolves through decades also.

My personal opinion is that the original from Lizzy is better, because I like the entire style of TL better. Additionally I think the fantastic Phil Lynott (rip) was genius and made it special, not only since I'm one of the lucky ones that got to experience TL live :)

I remember buying this bootleg i think back in 95-96. Half of it was acoustic with this, Rocket, Today, Cherub Rock and Disarm. All acoustic and amazing, still have it. The other side was live and loud but the version of Drown is great. Then they go into some Boston song which is funny. This was always the best though.
