@tecmo1 well some people never had a NES. I's hard to get it now, I was lucky and got mine in 2000 for 50 pounds with an original packaging and three games. one of them was SMB with duck hunt, also there's the fact that games have to go on , we can't just be stuck on game which is mario.
@tecmo1 It's probably because nowadays games are dominated by kids from different countries especially USA and as we both know that probably non of them played Mario and found it interesting, (probably they would moan about the graphics). In the times of NES and master system we have been kids and then we played what was cool, so we grabbed a Nes and started playing Mario. Nowadays kids have their PS3's XBOXES and play things that are shit but have good adverts.So they go and watch Call of Cuty

I sit in the gaming industry as a programmer and I know something about modern games, my comment is my opinion you don't need to agree I respect your opinion so I expect the same. My views are probably effected because I'm a traditional gamer that played such classic as Baldur's Gate. Mario plot is dull but this is why it's a success, just like angry birds now, But Mario and AB were not that simple as modern games are usually now.

Anyway I think you know something about casual and hardcore gamers, basically it's not graphics that make casual games compete with e.g: Battlefield3 but the gameplay, you know those families from the Nintendo commercials, there is always a kid, mother,father,sister. etc: but rarely there is a young teenager/adult because it comes down to a classical speech "This game is too violent" So average man would choose games like Minecraft instead
@Sappharos There is many families of casual people even my father used to tell me off for playing Mortal combat on the arcades long time ago and this are the people that prefer to buy less violent games, so the quality is (non-violence) casuality. By saying simple about modern games I mean "everything" is too linear,short and easy. It used to be that a total gameplay time was at least 10 hours and that's without any additional events, now it is about 2 hours and 5 with all the additional quests.
@Sappharos E.g: I completed Homefront in 2 hours when I played Call of Duty in 2003 it took me a whole week so it's about 12 hours, and the gameplay in Cod was exciting and hard. Now games lack most of this they are made up of 7 missions and that's it when in past there were like 5 campaigns that contained those 7 missions EACH also the level is just too easy as if they wanted the casuals to play as well. It's hard to find a pearl in a sea of waste.
@Sappharos But there are also the good games made that appreciate the needs of the hardcore gamers like the Witcher 2 that came out not long ago, I prefer this then Dragon age 2 that basically coped DA1 and did exactly the same thing luckily real gamers knew how to react and dumped the game away. Well I played Battlefield3 on consoles and PC, don't but the console version if you care about graphics because you would not believe how much they messed up the console port.
@Sappharos I played Oblivion, it is very interesting game better then Morrowind, not only graphically I reccomend it. Age of empires is a great series from 1 to 3 it never surprised me(in a bad way), I don't know why people say 3 is bad. It is like GTA4, the same thing with better graphics and a bit deeper story then the 3'rd one. AOE is one of my favourite (if not the most) real-time strategy, so hopefuly by my 5 comments I answered your questions, fell free to ask more.

Sequels rarely live up to the original character of the game; often improved graphics come at the expense of aesthetics, and gameplay is often dumbed down, so I really hadn't expected AoE3 to be any good; I must try it some day.

@MightyLemur ha! don't make me laugh... first of all, i'm a game collector and collect modern and retro games. i own both super mario bros. and mw2. i have put countless hours into both and imo are among the best games of all time. i happen to prefer mw2 because of the multiplayer and online. super mario bros. is a great game, a classic in fact, but has many problems. I'm not saying mw2 is the best game of all time, oot would take that prize, but in terms of overall gameplay, mw2 wins :)

I remember when i got my first NES when I was a 5 year old . I used for so long it Didn't work anymore. Then I told my dad he bought me another one. Them the same thing happened again. My dad bought me about 20 NES. Yup those were the days. ;)

@MightyLemur ha! don't make me laugh... first of all, i'm a game collector and collect modern and retro games. i own both super mario bros. and mw2. i have put countless hours into both and imo are among the best games of all time. i happen to prefer mw2 because of the multiplayer and online. super mario bros. is a great game, a classic in fact, but has many problems. I'm not saying mw2 is the best game of all time, oot would take that prize, but in terms of overall gameplay, mw2 wins :)

@MrAwesomeness220 Okay you may be a game collector but like I originally said you are just a kid.. That doesn't necessarily mean anything and could be taken as stereotyping yet there is a noticeable link between being a young teenager and being wow-ed by, as i said before, MW2's shallow tricks and shiny features when if you scratch the surface MW2 isn't all that great. Sure you can put alot of time into it but it's gameplay has nothing new that wins over other games, classic or new.

@MightyLemur wowed by shiny things? no. mw2 is fun plain and simple. maybe its not a classic or anything, like SMB is, its still fun, with a good campaign and great online multiplayer. smb is fantastic too. but to me when i picked the game up years after its release i wasn't seeing anything new. sure, it was revolutionary and great for its time, but when it comes to mario games, mario 64 and the galaxy games are better. mw2 may not be good as sm64, but it's better than super mario bros.

I remember when i got my first NES when I was a 5 year old . I used for so long it Didn't work anymore. Then I told my dad he bought me another one. Them the same thing happened again. My dad bought me about 20 NES. Yup those were the days. ;)
