Yep...some of the oldest in the world. The first mountain building events responsible for their formation were more than a billion years ago. That's why they are so much fun to walk on. A lot of deep time right below your feet. cool stuff.
I told my wife after I win a World Series of Poker event (WSOP) I will hike the trail..Well saturday I won a circuit event and now..holy cow, at 53, can I actually hike it?
Im so jealous, Ive been planning for the trip of a lifetime for years, im 15 and hope to hike it before heading off to college! I love to hike and go on overnight trips, I hope Im not over estimating my ability! Congrats!
@sbchickfcms I worked for 6 months after high school, then hiked. If you work to stay in your own head, and chant "I won't make it to Katahdin, today" every morning, one day you will be wrong. sloetoe
I have an entry in my journal titled "questions and answers" where i go over a lot of the details of my planning. I used the thru-hikers companion to plan all of my mail drops and write a basic itinerary. It only took a few days to do this. Once I started hiking, I slowly transitioned into more of a "wing-it" type attitude.
One of the things I could say about your vid is that it makes a great barameter: you could show it to people and ask, "Do you get it? Do you understand now?"
Them as do you can feel safe to think of as Good People.
good point! A lot of people do combine the two trails and call it the "Appalachian Mountains Trail". Unfortunately, the IAT isn't completed yet (a lot roadwalking) and it is still not officially recognized by the ATC as part of the trail. the main reason I didn't consider doing it was because I simply ran out of time. If I had the time, I might have done it. If you can, you should do both!
I saved up about $5000 for a year before the hike with the intent of spending it all....Which I just about did. I stayed in a lot of hostels and hotels though. I could have probably done the whole hike for $2000 if I was tented every night and didn't splurge as much
I just watched all your videos. I am planning to hike the whole stretch too, and this helps keep me focused on my preparations. Thanks for posting all of your vids. :)
Great slideshow! Very climactic. I remember the first time I walked down the trail, we were camping nearby, and after about 20 minutes, my brother and I started seeing a bunch of Indians in full gear and warpaint! Little did we know, they were filming The Last Of The Mohicans! What a trip for a 12 year-old! Never forget it!
I thru-hiked in '99 and it was the happiest time of my life. I never felt so free and alive and purposeful. Looking at your slide show brought back some great memories. And seeing the pictures of you on Katahdin brought a tear to my eyes. Thanks for sharing.
if you decide to go back out there or to another trail.. I'm dying to go do something like that. I'm itching for another adventure.. maybe we can team up? Hit me back if you think about doing something.
Kudos to you John,I am sure you must feel proud. While I have hiked only part of Virginia, your videos inspire me to hopefully one day make a thru hike..Congratulations
Very moving slideshow. I hope that one day I'll be able to hike it (I'll have to section it since I have a family).
The very last picture where you're holding your left arm up, looks like you have a huge head or a small left arm lol. (It's funny what camera angles can do)
Hey John good job ! You flew man... I didn't see you after traildays. Anyways the video is amazing. It felt like a huge punch in the stomach. In a good but longing way. Take care.
Beautiful video. Brings back memories of my thru-hikes. Thanks for posting.

From what I remember from geography and geology classes the Appalachian Mountains are one of the oldest in USA.
Or maybe I'm wrong...

How long did it take you to hike? Would it be possible to do it in about 3 1/2 months? I'm thinking about hiking it over a summer break from school.
osageroarange 4 years ago
It took me 3 & 1/2 months. I averaged 22 miles a day though
