  • I personally think that Justin Bieber should've won that year. But, she's awesome!

  • There's always footstools.

  • Alicia Keys can learn from her!

  • love that bass. <3

  • Thanks God she won the Grammy and no Bieber!

  • makes the panties drop

  • I didn't know about Esperanza until now at the academy and I am very impress with her voice, she is so young to have such mature and wonderful strong voice. She is also beautiful, I hope she stays classy and out of trouble. You can be famous without been trashy and she seems to have all the right qualities.

  • @picacho5098 you have to purchase her cds...just push play

  • She makes me want to be tall enough to play the bass.

  • @SavageHazels met her at a show in SF... she's pretty short. like 5'4"ish. its the hair i guess. that said, she still plays the shit out of that bass though

  • @SavageHazels she's pretty short

  • video response:

    watch?v=hXjzSMeM-IU

  • The academy awards brought me here too! Esperanza's amazing!

  • the academy awards brought me here!

  • I would be delighted to hear her sing some classic jazz :)

  • I long to see this wonderful artist someday...

  • I'm seeing Esperanza in concert in April! I am suuuuuuper excited!! :)

  • Beautiful song, I became a fan of Esperanza because of this song...and the Grammy win hahah :)

  • SHE IS FUCKING AWESOME

  • Beautiful woman with a beautiful voice & a beautiful talent on double bass, etc...

How did I miss her for all these years? I'm sure I shall be enjoying you for years to come...

  • Beautiful!!!!

  • I cannot be the only one who thinks Alicia Keys CAN NOT sing. She is talented; she makes amazing music, but she should leave the vocals for someone else.

  • Why would Esperanza do a duet with someone whose voice is so similar to her own? The beauty of vocal duets is the contrast of timbres and you can't tell when it's one or the other. Pity. Anyway, a nice song and and a great video.

  • okay so i didn't think perfection existed until i discovered esperanza spalding, my mind has never wavered. i still love her, possibly more and more every day.

  • its better this way that artistes like Keys, Spalding or Regina Spektor are not as publicised as the other 'fanny-slapping-oversexed-chicks'. (as very rightly put!). These artistes carve a way better edge and i'm sure they are acknowledged by the right people.

  • @ketki88 Alicia Keys is very much publicized.

  • @YeseniaDavis - Uhm.. well yeah but not in the same way as many others i was referring to with all the euphemisms. i guess Naim, Spalding Regina .. would have been a better example. ! :)

  • hermosa voz, magnifica ejecucion del instrumento, bellisima mujer, te amo esperanza.

  • cool!

  • Softly touching on the truth that we are all merley bugs in the grand universe. Honor thy bugness of our humanity amen...

  • @Greghormone

    yes!

  • Dear spalding beauty. This is sound at its finest. Thank you.

  • The poem is wonderful. Her arrangement is stupendious! My son loved this song the day he listened 2 it, so naturally everytime I play or hear it I weap. So beautiful is "good" music :-) 4 U, Kai. Love U, and see U soon. Dad.

  • listen to this every day omg like this cause vilons and chello my favorite instruments!!!!!!

  • @soymilkcat the reason why everyone is comparing her to mainstream artists is b/c she is actually talented and not getting the respect she deserves most mainstream music lacks art, class, and individuality and thats why esperanza and other talented musicians should be praised for what they do

  • I'm not worried. She'll be working in 50 years. She knows this too.

  • Comment removed

  • the irrelevancy in the constant remarks about how terrible mainstream music is compared to more talented artists (like esperanza) is ridiculous. why can't people just enjoy the music without comparing and complaining? each artist is in an entity of their own, so their is no need for all this endless complaning. just enjoy the music!

  • @lisatalley22 well she deserved it too there are more prizes then just that its not the end of the wourld

  • @IrishRadioGirl and she didnt she worked just as hard as him

  • Beautiful.

  • 87 beliebers hahahaha'

  • OMGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!! I freakin love this...so beautiful:)

  • I saw her first on Austin City Limits, and have been captivated ever scince

  • I LOVE India Arie and Alicia, gosh, my goddess

  • 0.o

  • Only someone as talented as Esperanza Spalding could have set this William Blake poem to music and transform it into a jazz arrangement. It works if allow yourself to swept up by it. I love it for its originality and i feel like I'm a little fly!

  • I am introducing my youngest daughter (13 years old) to Espranza now so that she can get off of the Beoncey kick, I play the bass and she sings

  • Why doesn't luck smile to all of the people who deserve it?

  • this is really beautiful :) i caught her performance on Austin City Limits this morning and now i'm going to buy her latest album soon

  • Beautiful.

  • Just WOW!

  • Her voice is heavenly! Thank you for sharing your talents!

  • all i need is esperanza

  • Thumbs up if you feel suddenly ashamed of your ability to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on piano. o_O

  • Wow, she totally transformed this poem. And that bass is yummy!

  • What a wonderful eclectic artistry. The superbly played bass with a marvelous voice is a refreshing if unexpected combination of talent and performance. Can't wait to hear more.

  • Jazz is my bf's fave. so its also mine now :DDD

  • @lunalerock So you just like what your boyfriend likes?? That is pretty shallow, why not find your own identity and what you like instead of just liking what people around you like. It is ok if you like jazz that is good and it is good if you boyfriend turned you on to it, but don't just like it because you boyfriend like it.

  • @Thebattlewalrus uhh...okay.. but i actually started to like jazz. i've been hearing em a lot xD. but okay. thanks for the words of advice ^_^ . ill find my own identity :DDD

  • Wow--a woman who has her clothes on, plays an instrument, and sings well--disliked by 84 jlo fans!

  • 84 people have no soul

  • I am so sick of "popular mainstream music", this is true music for the soul and I am so glad there are artists like her in the music industry!! :)

  • The faces she makes are so hot!

  • Her voice reminds me of a young Ella Fitzgerald. All the more mellifluous to my ears.

  • lovely voice!

  • I love how people try to sound intelligent when they write about music. Hilarious.

  • my god she can hypnotize a crowd such talent and super beauty...im buying your album thats how much i dig u...im super picky in music i purchase but this is worth it i love your style

  • Beautiful...

  • Real music! Rich and delicious. You just know when youve heard something real and beautiful, it changes your whole being. And then you replay it over and over...

    Gotta buy her work.

  • This is music for the soul.

  • Amazing!

  • I think it sucks that artists like her or Janelle Monae or India arie or even Alicia Keys dont get enough recognition becuz they choose not to be provocative. This is real talent, guys. But the media focuses on chicks who can barely sing while slapping their fannies in oversexed dance. Sucks, man. Really sucks...

  • @PrettyTiaF especially Janelle and India....that is a travesty . Keeping your clothes ON and having real talent and skills and musical intelligence just does not seem to matter these days. Sigh

  • @PrettyTiaF U know I agree with you, but I dont think its all about the media. Because the media gives what the public wants. If only more people would opt to listen to artists like these more often, the media would make sure they're names were everywhere. ITS THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE LOST TASTE IN MUSIC! Its a shame.

  • Comment removed

  • @PrettyTiaF NO SHIT!!!!

  • @PrettyTiaF Why did you even throw Alicia Keys in there. AK is on Beyonce's level and gets plenty of recognition. She's pretty provocative--ask Swizz Beatz and his ex-wife.

  • @PrettyTiaF so TRUE!!!!! She coming to NY in April...FYI

  • @PrettyTiaF I agree...except for Keys. She gets a lot of recognition. Deservedly so, of course. I think the list should look like: Spalding, Monae, Arie, and Regina Spektor.

  • @PrettyTiaF A Grammy is pretty good recognition.

  • @PrettyTiaF LOVE that statement! This society prefers women grinding half naked in their videos signing lame lyrics or lip synching in performances to women like the ones you named and Esperanza. It's a shame

  • @PrettyTiaF Actually I'm thinking the same way like you do. But in the end I think it's okay like it is now. If media and publicity all together focused on "real music" like this, all the great music wouldn't longer last like this. At last the stardom and wide idolization itself is what makes music become no longer the best of the best but also "mainstream". That's not valid for all but for many musicians. It is a bit like meaning well-politcians that become like all others when they reach sway.

  • beautiful, just beautiful... *sighs*

  • playing bass and singing at the same time is probably the most musically difficult thing

  • @Vizillar2505

    True dat!!! Jus ask Sting!

and thats a duo i'd love to hear!

  • Beautiful musicianship, lovely voice, and actual intellect. So rare in music today, which is why she DESERVED the New Artist Grammy.

  • @EAG46 She certainly did deserve the grammy and when was the last time we actually saw merit over marketability win a major music award>? Gives me hope. peace

  • bad joka!!

  • "Spalding, who has expressed a desire to be judged for her musicianship rather than her sex appeal, believes that female musicians must take responsibility to avoid oversexualizing themselves." hmm wonder who she's referring to? IMO her collaborating with either Jill Scott or Erykah - or all 3 together -- would be interesting.

  • @2tim149 LOVE IT!!!

  • @2tim149 I agree this is real talent, but this song is so boring its absurd.

  • this woman is the epitome of an artist. enough said.

  • She's talented but come on, quoting William Blake while playing Jazz, fucking pretentious nonsense.

  • @Rushthatspeaks: Perhaps you might like to evaluate your comment for pretentiousness.

What annoys us in other people tends to be a useful mirror.

  • @owlabelle Uh, no? Fags annoy me as well and I'm pretty sure I'm not a fucking homo, so you might want to reevaluate YOUR comment. Try another angle to defend pretentiousness. I said she was talented but fuck turning a fucking poem into a jazz song is the epitome of pretentious.

  • I'm so glad she won the award for "Best New Artist" Haha, did you see the look on Beiber's face though? Hilarious..

  • She must be an Angel....

  • @Rubetube1st IKR

  • Pure musical talent, Pure class!!

  • ...I am lezbo for her voice.

  • as much as I love Drake, this is real talent

she deserves to have won Best New Artist 100%

  • as much as I love Drake, this is real talent

  • Have you ever heard a song where you really wish you would have come up with that song?

Well that's how I feel. About this song.

  • If God was music, this is what it sounds like.

  • @MegaSam107 hahahahahahahahhaah.

  • @MegaSam107 THIS IS MUSIC. TRUE MUSIC. NOT LIKE THE CRAP YOU LISTEN TO FROM POP STARS WHO ALL SOUND THE SAME

  • this music is so stunning. Holy crap, how does Party Rock Anthem have more views than this gem?

  • 81 people dont understand what is happening here!!!!!

  • is she real???????????????????

does such beauty and talent still exist??????????

damn her voice sounds like it comes from....is it the 40s, 50s or????dayum

    she is TALENTED

  • @ntendenidownload True dat. Double true.

  • wow she is fly!

  • Just amazing, i like your sound!

  • Pure musical genius

  • 素晴らしい!

  • Her music makes me sad because I know there's now way I'll ever be this good. What she does is impossible. I don't believe it. It cannot be done. But she did it. The bitch.

  • Simply Beautiful!!

  • Thumbs up if Jazz should take over the music industry again.

  • @davo9678 but thats what went wrong with it in the first place. thumbs up that good jazz artists can get the recognition they deserve, and good gigs at the whitehouse

  • She is wonderful. Though I do prefer Florence + the Machine and feel she deserved the award, I'm fine with the fact Esperanza Spalding won because she is a gifted musician.

  • i really think shes good at singing, but if shes going to make any money shes going to have to go more in pop music, although i like how she expresses herself in her music i mean not all ppl are as pomp and pop loving as lady gaga

  • @omfgalexgotmoves actually she can probably make a great living doing what she is doing, she'll do fine.

  • @omfgalexgotmoves

Thats not the truth at all.

She had a concert in my city yesterday and it was sold out.

And I really dont believe that shes in it for the money.

She feels this in her soul.

  • Beautiful

  • Esperanza quiero un hijo tuyo!!!

  • wow her range... :)

  • she has nice hair x

  • Thank the heavens for Esperanza seriously I am so happy we have an incredible Jazz contemapry musician out there <3

  • its allright but seriously when she won that grammy i didnt even know who she was never heard of her

  • @raydiokilla That's because she's not a product of the music industry's recording artist production machine. She's actually a musician and vocalist. I hadn't heard of her either until she was featured on NPR's Latino USA. Thank you alternate sources for allowing us to find rare gems like this. :)

  • Good? It's okay, but better than Mumford or Florence?

  • @Teldumor All of Mumford's songs sound the same. Florence is alright. Over hyped though.

  • she went to the same high school as me, kinda cool. lol she beat justin beiber for best young artist :D

  • Comment removed

  • she's a very strong and creative individual!

  • Wow , what a wonderful, new artist! So many listeners have been desensitized to really great music, due to to the weak pablum, served up to us by strong marketing, good to see a great new artist marketed well!

  • that bAss makes me happy. ;)

  • <3

  • WE LOVE Esperanza!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful!!!!

  • I find this anything but relaxing. It's something more along the lines of intensely resigned. It seems we've lost the ability to find that deep intensity that resides within subtlety.

  • I wonder how many people can appreciate the difficulty of playing different notes from what you sing and also playing different rhythms from the rhythms of your vocals. This lady has phenomenal independence between her singing and her playing. This isn't the same as mechanically strumming some chords on your acoustic guitar while you croon a simple song. Her performances suggest that two brains are coordinating inside her cranium.

  • wow..she's not playing with this bass

  • Why all the comments are related to Bieber? forget it... Now we have Esperanza...

  • i cant believe stupid Bieber fans talk shit about her, she is the definition of definition! Unlike Justine Bieber

  • what a woman

  • 去年はオバマのバーティーで2度目のステージをやったようやが、スゴイ才能や!

    ロンカーターもビックリや!

  • Her voice puts my restless spirit at ease.

  • This reminds me so much of Amana Melome...youtube(dot)com/watch?v=vAfn0jtfEnE

  • good job u beat up justing bieber

  • Oct 16th,,, DC ,,,I'm there;)))))

  • i love her style u really have to chill and listen to what she says instead of justin biber who auto tones baby baby baby ooh :( yuck

  • She won because she is GOD!

  • This song is Moving its Beautiful its Full of Emotion so many words can be said about this song about ms Spalding.

  • Wow she made me into liking jazz. She is talented.

  • Man, she makes that bass SING. Beautiful.

  • Thumbs up if you have all of her 3 albums.

  • I literally had chills watching this! She is my FAVORITE ARTIST lik ever!!!! :D

  • 75 Crazy People who Dislike it.

  • I don't think most people realize just how incredible this young lady is. She's one of a kind. No one can do this! Sing at this level and play at an even higher level. Justin Beaver Who? Please!
