I didn't know about Esperanza until now at the academy and I am very impress with her voice, she is so young to have such mature and wonderful strong voice. She is also beautiful, I hope she stays classy and out of trouble. You can be famous without been trashy and she seems to have all the right qualities.
@SavageHazels met her at a show in SF... she's pretty short. like 5'4"ish. its the hair i guess. that said, she still plays the shit out of that bass though
I cannot be the only one who thinks Alicia Keys CAN NOT sing. She is talented; she makes amazing music, but she should leave the vocals for someone else.
Why would Esperanza do a duet with someone whose voice is so similar to her own? The beauty of vocal duets is the contrast of timbres and you can't tell when it's one or the other. Pity. Anyway, a nice song and and a great video.
okay so i didn't think perfection existed until i discovered esperanza spalding, my mind has never wavered. i still love her, possibly more and more every day.
its better this way that artistes like Keys, Spalding or Regina Spektor are not as publicised as the other 'fanny-slapping-oversexed-chicks'. (as very rightly put!). These artistes carve a way better edge and i'm sure they are acknowledged by the right people.
@YeseniaDavis - Uhm.. well yeah but not in the same way as many others i was referring to with all the euphemisms. i guess Naim, Spalding Regina .. would have been a better example. ! :)
The poem is wonderful. Her arrangement is stupendious! My son loved this song the day he listened 2 it, so naturally everytime I play or hear it I weap. So beautiful is "good" music :-) 4 U, Kai. Love U, and see U soon. Dad.
@soymilkcat the reason why everyone is comparing her to mainstream artists is b/c she is actually talented and not getting the respect she deserves most mainstream music lacks art, class, and individuality and thats why esperanza and other talented musicians should be praised for what they do
I love this compilation, beauty women and specific instrument which is contrabass and of course beautifull voice. It sounds jazzy. I have never been seen before such an image. I am really delightet from this view :)
the irrelevancy in the constant remarks about how terrible mainstream music is compared to more talented artists (like esperanza) is ridiculous. why can't people just enjoy the music without comparing and complaining? each artist is in an entity of their own, so their is no need for all this endless complaning. just enjoy the music!
Only someone as talented as Esperanza Spalding could have set this William Blake poem to music and transform it into a jazz arrangement. It works if allow yourself to swept up by it. I love it for its originality and i feel like I'm a little fly!
What a wonderful eclectic artistry. The superbly played bass with a marvelous voice is a refreshing if unexpected combination of talent and performance. Can't wait to hear more.
@lunalerock So you just like what your boyfriend likes?? That is pretty shallow, why not find your own identity and what you like instead of just liking what people around you like. It is ok if you like jazz that is good and it is good if you boyfriend turned you on to it, but don't just like it because you boyfriend like it.
@Thebattlewalrus uhh...okay.. but i actually started to like jazz. i've been hearing em a lot xD. but okay. thanks for the words of advice ^_^ . ill find my own identity :DDD
my god she can hypnotize a crowd such talent and super beauty...im buying your album thats how much i dig u...im super picky in music i purchase but this is worth it i love your style
Real music! Rich and delicious. You just know when youve heard something real and beautiful, it changes your whole being. And then you replay it over and over...
I think it sucks that artists like her or Janelle Monae or India arie or even Alicia Keys dont get enough recognition becuz they choose not to be provocative. This is real talent, guys. But the media focuses on chicks who can barely sing while slapping their fannies in oversexed dance. Sucks, man. Really sucks...
@PrettyTiaF especially Janelle and India....that is a travesty . Keeping your clothes ON and having real talent and skills and musical intelligence just does not seem to matter these days. Sigh
@PrettyTiaF U know I agree with you, but I dont think its all about the media. Because the media gives what the public wants. If only more people would opt to listen to artists like these more often, the media would make sure they're names were everywhere. ITS THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE LOST TASTE IN MUSIC! Its a shame.
@PrettyTiaF Why did you even throw Alicia Keys in there. AK is on Beyonce's level and gets plenty of recognition. She's pretty provocative--ask Swizz Beatz and his ex-wife.
@PrettyTiaF I agree...except for Keys. She gets a lot of recognition. Deservedly so, of course. I think the list should look like: Spalding, Monae, Arie, and Regina Spektor.
@PrettyTiaF LOVE that statement! This society prefers women grinding half naked in their videos signing lame lyrics or lip synching in performances to women like the ones you named and Esperanza. It's a shame
@PrettyTiaF Actually I'm thinking the same way like you do. But in the end I think it's okay like it is now. If media and publicity all together focused on "real music" like this, all the great music wouldn't longer last like this. At last the stardom and wide idolization itself is what makes music become no longer the best of the best but also "mainstream". That's not valid for all but for many musicians. It is a bit like meaning well-politcians that become like all others when they reach sway.
@EAG46 She certainly did deserve the grammy and when was the last time we actually saw merit over marketability win a major music award>? Gives me hope. peace
"Spalding, who has expressed a desire to be judged for her musicianship rather than her sex appeal, believes that female musicians must take responsibility to avoid oversexualizing themselves." hmm wonder who she's referring to? IMO her collaborating with either Jill Scott or Erykah - or all 3 together -- would be interesting.
@owlabelle Uh, no? Fags annoy me as well and I'm pretty sure I'm not a fucking homo, so you might want to reevaluate YOUR comment. Try another angle to defend pretentiousness. I said she was talented but fuck turning a fucking poem into a jazz song is the epitome of pretentious.
Her music makes me sad because I know there's now way I'll ever be this good. What she does is impossible. I don't believe it. It cannot be done. But she did it. The bitch.
@davo9678 but thats what went wrong with it in the first place. thumbs up that good jazz artists can get the recognition they deserve, and good gigs at the whitehouse
She is wonderful. Though I do prefer Florence + the Machine and feel she deserved the award, I'm fine with the fact Esperanza Spalding won because she is a gifted musician.
i really think shes good at singing, but if shes going to make any money shes going to have to go more in pop music, although i like how she expresses herself in her music i mean not all ppl are as pomp and pop loving as lady gaga
@raydiokilla That's because she's not a product of the music industry's recording artist production machine. She's actually a musician and vocalist. I hadn't heard of her either until she was featured on NPR's Latino USA. Thank you alternate sources for allowing us to find rare gems like this. :)
Wow , what a wonderful, new artist! So many listeners have been desensitized to really great music, due to to the weak pablum, served up to us by strong marketing, good to see a great new artist marketed well!
I find this anything but relaxing. It's something more along the lines of intensely resigned. It seems we've lost the ability to find that deep intensity that resides within subtlety.
I wonder how many people can appreciate the difficulty of playing different notes from what you sing and also playing different rhythms from the rhythms of your vocals. This lady has phenomenal independence between her singing and her playing. This isn't the same as mechanically strumming some chords on your acoustic guitar while you croon a simple song. Her performances suggest that two brains are coordinating inside her cranium.
I don't think most people realize just how incredible this young lady is. She's one of a kind. No one can do this! Sing at this level and play at an even higher level. Justin Beaver Who? Please!
