  • Swoon.

  • i've read 5 stories about this and none mentioned jfk.

  • @gailmckennag mike did a radio interview where he said they wrote it the night before JFK was assasinated he said they felt a little meloncholy but they didnt know it didnt happen yet he wasnt claiming to be a psychic he wasnt a guru yet

  • amazing!!!

  • @MrPetercriss1971 how deep is the ocean ?

  • beautiful song, beautifully performed,no doubt...but david ,bless his heart intro'd the wrong one.The song he was talking about is Until I Die.

  • The 1st time I heard this--March of '64, when I purchased Shut-Down, Vol-2, I was in tears--having never, ever heard anything so sad, yet so beautiful. When I played the song for My Dad, he asked me which of the young guys on the cover wrote & arranged it. I told him he was just 20 y/o, & had never taken a music class in his life. MY dad said, " Mike, that young man has something very special about him". How right My Dad was. Wolfsky9

  • brings tears.......

  • I'm so in love with you, Vince...............

  • Paul Mertens play the harmonica, part of BW band

  • One of my favorite Beach Boys tunes, sung by one of my favorite performers. Go get some, Vinnie!

  • Anyone know who played harmonica on this song? He has a very Norton Buffalo-esque style. Beautiful tune - I keep playing it over and over...

  • actually the song was written the day before JFK was killed

  • @glenglag WRONG KNOW IT ALL

  • @glenglag The song was inspired by the emotional shock Brian Wilson and Mike Love felt over the assassination of John Kennedy at the now-defunct Hotel El Dorado in Sacramento, California. Chicago's Museum of Broadcast Communications declared the assassination 'most memorable' political moment in American radio and television history. As a result to Wilson and Love's shock, the song carries a very serious and emotional quality.

  • @mjw9363 Thats wrong mike said they wrote it the night before JFK was assasinated

  • LONG LIVE BRIAN WILSON!

  • Vince Gill is good enough to harmonize with the best american band ever and that is a great compliment. Not many voices as good as Vince's. He does Brian's words great justice. He should record this.

  • Vince Gill possesses one of the finest voices to ever grace popular music but clearly excels singing plaintive soulful ballads about loss. longing, or unfulfilled love, delivering a powerful, poignant, high lonesome sound that simply pierces the heart.

  • @WALRU11 You put it so well I agree completely.

  • @bigdaddyg1952 Thanks. In my opinion, there are only a few singers in modern music who have been able to do what Gill does so well. His performances share that lofty rarified peak of romantic ballad perfection that heretofore belonged only to Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison. Vince Gill brings elegance to the art of Country Music.

  • It's very difficult to match the beauty of the Beach Boys doing their songs. But God! Vince nailed this. Unbelievably beautiful.

  • His voice sooo rocks!! Too awesome....

  • this is so awesome

  • Beautiful

  • This is beautiful version but nobody can ever compare to the version with Willie Nelson. Melts my heart every time.

  • Awesome version

  • I am not a country music fan but Vince Gill does an amazing job on one of the Beach Boys best songs. Well done Vince!

  • Brian cried.

  • amazing vocal!

  • The guy in the intro is David Crosby.

  • Comment removed

  • so wilson wrote this the night before jfk tragedy. no matter. vince knocks it out of the park.

  • so he wrote this song the night before the jfk tragedy. the guy in the intro was a little creative and melodramatic then.

  • @belairfed thats david crosby he went off the deep end on stage at monterey pop saying JFKs assasination was a conspiracy

  • This is when I knew that Vince Gill had one of the best voices of our time.

  • Wow. Great job Vince ! Thanks for this posting. I never knew how this was related to the Kennedy incident. Thanks for that bit of history.

  • Comment removed

  • Vince hasn't won 20 grammy awards for nothing. He is so amazingly talented. That beautiful voice, his amazing guitar talent, not to mention his award-winning song writing. I've yet to find anyone to measure up to him. If you haven't experienced his music, you're missing out. Check him out!

  • Wow, that was fantastic. And with one hand in his pocket, too!

  • David Crosby

  • he nailed that.

  • I was AT this taping at Radio City...Crosby was a jerk..he had some altercation with the crew and lighting people and made rude comments on stage. But when I heard Vince sing this--it was sublime. Great job Vince.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic

I think he was invited to join Dire Straits...

  • Wasn't Vince invited to join the Beach Boys?

  • @jtsantafe Never heard that. He was in Pure Prarie League.

  • @nyrichiek

He was in a later version of PPL, sang on their biggest chart hit. "Let Me Love You Tonight"

  • my favorite beach boy song

  • anybody know where i can get this song either on CD or as a download ?

  • @JOYTLO Never seen it on CD but the DVD entitled " An all star tribute to Brian Wilson" is still available and it contains the whole show together with Vince singing " Surfs Up" which is another gem along with a Billy Joel rendition of "Dont worry Baby"

  • Comment removed

  • @lyngoodwin Thanks very much for this info. gonna look out for that DVD now. Cheers

  • @lyngoodwin No it does NOT contain the whole show. It contains MOST of the show. i was there .\Tthere are a number of songs not released on the DVD. I have no idea why they were not released. But there are about 6 songs played live missing.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Thanks for that info Dave, you are one lucky guy to have got to that show, maybe another 6 songs ( and speeches) would not have fit on a DVD. Hope you were the guy sat next to Lulu, she still looks great !

  • @b44ts The Go Gos did two songs, (Are BOTH on the DVD--I dont think so-Paul Simon did TWO..I dont think they are both there,..>>Crosby did 2 and sang a third together with someone. I cant recall who else is not on the DVD,.,..Brians son--Justin Wilson also sang...not sure on the Dvd. I was also able to meet everyone back at the hotel--including Brian..I have a photo with him..very few do...He was very nice. But so was Vince Gill (SUPER nice guy) And Crosby was MEAN...

  • @DavelovesRealMusic

Correction...Brian doesn't have a son. Justin is Carl Wilson's son. (Brian does have an adopted son who is still young)

  • A nice version. He sort of looks like he could be a Wilson brother, doesn't he?

  • well.. he tried.

  • Damn, that was incredibly beautiful

  • Nice try... No one can sing like Brian used to!

  • adding the harmonica is a great touch to a great song.

  • To imagine, Brian & Mike were 20 y/o when they composed this all-time masterwork, will continue to amaze me forever. Vince does it with true heart & it's beautiful. Wolfsky9

  • @Wolfsky9 it really is amazing, im 20 right now and a lot of the times i can't think of shit to put in a song that i try to write myself but brian instantly wrote this and it's a gift i have yet to experience.

  • @Wolfsky9 You are right to call this composition a masterwork. This rendition is nothing short of incredible.

  • Just shut-up already and enjoy the music!!!

  • @SandyDog102 I'm sorry you never learned to spell in school, well maybe you excelled in something else?If its about the Music then it should be about the Music!! Leave the politics out! But David Crosby and Neil Young like to mix them up, Its about like having a whore house in the back of a church. I hope you figure out,,, what I'm trying to point out. Try hooked on phonics!! Have a nice life C-Ya!

  • Vince Gill is super!!!!!

  • Wonderful performance of one of my favourite of Brian's melodies. I'm not trolling here or putting anyone down but I have always felt the lyrics, title apart, never matched the quality of the music - too banal, but there again in '63 even Lennon McCartney couldn't get past teen romance lyrics.

  • DAVID CROSBY IS A FUCKIN ASSHOLE!!!!

  • why would you say such a thing?

  • Because He is part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young,, Maybe you should watch some of thier latest concerts. They are just too much into politics instead of music. Music got them where they're at today, but now they use thier popularity to voice thier political opinions, I believe in freedom of speech, but these people have alot more connections to the media than u&I, I think anyone in show business should keep it to themselves, and not use thier fame to try to change someones mind!!!! Thank You

  • who gives a shit if he has strong beliefs on political issues and he speaks out about things he doesn't think are right? he's been a part of several great bands, and is a pretty chill guy, you just disagree with his politics. pretty stupid.

  • Well its pretty easy to see that YOU JUST DON'T GET IT,,,,,,,Pretty STUPID!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @BIGART1950 ...OK, so we NOW know YOUR opinion. NOT everyone agrees with you about CSNTR&Y including me. It's about the music, not politics! You should know that my now.

  • Onf of BW's finest songs, ever. Vince did it with real TLC, & it is beautiful. As a lifetime fan of " TWOTS", I loved it. GBY, Vince. Wolfsky9

  • Quite stirring. Stunning performance.

  • Wow. I had my doubts. Being a huge Brian Wilson fan, I didn't think anyone else could do this song. But Vince did a real nice job.

  • Not too many people besides Vince can pull this off! Wow!

  • @ramitupursnout i live in Redondo Beach, where the Beach Boys have been and are so "popular". I have never heard such a beautiful rendition of a Beach Boys' song as this..it is simply gorgeous. What a beautiful voice Vince Gill has...and that band and back up singers, sublime!

  • So beautiful, so beautiful.....

  • Yeah, it's a good version. Of course, Gill is singing one of the greatest songs ever plus he's backed-up by the Wondermints, Brian Wilson's road band.

  • I have loved this song since discovering it on the flip side of the 45 of Dance, Dance, Dance.

I, too, was in 6th grade when JFK was killed. I never related this song to that event; and still don't see the connection. David Crosby says this song ( "I'll dream of her arms, and though they're not real" )expressed what the whole nation was feeling about JFK?

  • The connection is that Brian wrote the song the night of the murder & has said that the melancholy tone of the song was inspired by the events of the day. I think Crosby meant the nation was feeling melancholy. In terms of lyrics, I think the correlation is that in the wake of a tragedy (such as a breakup with your girl), the warmth of the sun will always be there.

  • Thanks, BillMcE. I spoke to my cousin about this after he turned me onto the video clip, and he explained it much as you have.

  • Well, said. That is exactly the connection. It's about dealing with all kinds of sadness. Everyday you have the Warmth of the Sun to heal your soul.

  • amazing song, this guy can sing really good.

  • Vince is such a jerk. The stunt he pulled at the Walmart Banquet, that resulted in Walmart pulling his albums for 2 years, is very representative of the ego-maniac he truly is.

  • What are you talking about?

  • Vince threw a fit at a Walmart corporate event years ago. He was playing the dinner following a golf event. Golf ran late so the attendees were late for the dinner. As soon at they started showing up for the dinner he wanted to go on. The dinner was a buffet so everyone was standing in line getting their food. Vince got mad that no one was listening to his performance, yelled at the audience and left the stage. Walmart banned him for a year. Vince's sales slip and he begged for forgiveness.

  • can't say that I blame him...

  • @theguitarzan Wal-Mart sucks

  • @theguitarzan Wal-Mart sucks

  • There is simply no one like Vince Gill. It's like listening to an Angel sing. I have never much cared for "The Warmth of the Sun," but I'd love to have this in my ipod. I can't find it for download.

  • The Warmth Of The Sun is actually much better than Vince Gill is. Try to figure out a way that you can realize that. Picture yourself at some of your relatives houses that have passed. Imagine the song in your head while you're walking around the house.

  • dude let's hang out

  • sounds good to me :)

  • I love this performance so much that I have to keep coming back to hear it again and again.

  • I was in 6th grade coming home from school on lunch break -

hearing on tv that JFK was shot dead in Dallas. Going back to school sharing with the teacher on what had happened = we were all in shock......it still brings tears to my eyes hearing this song.

  • What's not to like? A great singer performing a great song with a great backup band

. . . Now, if Vince could only play guitar :o)

  • Incredible !!! This entire evening at Radio City Music Hall was a wonderful experience. Billy Joel,Paul Simon, Carly Simon, Darius Rucker, Wilson Phillips, The Goo Goo dolls...etc.etc..great evening in tribute the genius behind the Beach Boys...Brian Wilson.

  • You forgot Heart! They did Good Vibrations. I was there too! It was one of the best concerts ever!

  • Justintime

I knew I would leave someone important out of my comments. Thanks. I might also include Elton John, David Crosby,Jimmy Webb(I think),the Harlem Boys Choir, and last, but not least, the great musical icon himself, Brian Wilson. I was so moved by this concert and later bought the video.

    Capt Sam

  • Vince Gill is a really great guy, This is one of my all time favorite songs written and performed by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. I just wish Vince would have got the last verse right .( My loves like the warmth of the sun it won't ever die,, Not ,,,still i have the warmth of the sun,it won't ever die) Thanks for posting

  • Wow! Voice of an Angel.

  • How on earth can a man sing so perfectly ? Totally amazing !!!

  • My God, how beautiful......

  • honestly i've never heard of Vince Gill, really. but wow, i'm gonna check out his stuff...this guy can seriously sing.

  • Absolutely. Nailed. It.

  • one of the best songs ever beautifully sung

  • Damn, Vince wasn't missing any meals back then!

  • What a beautiful version of a great song. I remember this from watching the concert. Tried to go out and buy it but no luck. Also why do we have to debate whose version is better? Both are so, so, beautiful in their own right.

  • I actually bought a copy of the concert on DVD in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, so just FYI, it IS out there.

  • I am so glad many of you who didn't know Vince before this tribute know him now. Vince is a wonderful singer, songwrtier, guitar player...Brian Wilson is of my era...listened to many Beach Boy song during those years...Brian is great for what Brian does...and Vinnie is great for what he does also....I love Vince Gill

  • Wow. I remember seeing the televised performance and practically jumping out of my chair and saying "Wow!". I didn't know who Vince Gill was and was asking everyone who that guy was who sang so incredibly well on a song that I thought could never be adequately covered. Vince sings it slightly differently than Brian did and so well. Kudos to Vince!

  • Un real.

    Vince.

  • This is not better than Brian Wilson in '64. Vince did a great job, though.

  • Wish someday Vinny would record an album of covers and include this and Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Only problem is that we'd miss his music. There's no one like him.... a true eigth wonder of the world.

  • I had no idea this guy sings so well. Great!

  • Wonderful song. Vince is the best.

    For ROSE with LOVE.

  • Vince absolutely nails this. Brilliant singer. Brilliant song. Pity I can't find it on a CD, though.

  • he does sing better then brian. But this isnt a competition.brian is an incredible singer and songwriter.vince is an amazing vocalist and performer.theyre both great:)

  • without a doubt the BEST cover ever done for that song. In addition it rivals the original and I am a BIG beach boys/Brian Wilson fan. Maybe its because the recording technology is SO much better today, when Vince hits those highs its simply amazingly well done

  • you people act like he sings it better than brian wilson did in the 60's lol. please. nice rendition though.

  • i have been dying to find the video of vince gill singing the eagles hit "i can't tell you why" he's great remember him on poco?yep that was him.

  • I've been reading the entire history of Poco and I cannot find any reference to Vince Gill, even as an uncredited performer.

  • He did not sing on Amie...But the group is Pure Prairie League anyway.

Hits for the band include "Two Lane Highway", "I'm Almost Ready", and the musically less-representative pop song, "Let Me Love You Tonight". The latter two feature Vince Gill on vocals, who sang and played guitar with the band in the early 1980s before moving on to become one of Nashville, Tennessees biggest stars.

  • @1508inf

Nope, that was Timothy B Schmit who was in The Eagles and also Poco. :)

  • Sitting at my desk at work right now, trying not to cry like a baby. Isn't something how out of pain, like a love gone wrong, something beautiful and timeless comes. If Brian wrote this before JFK was shot, I wonder what was going on in his life that gave him this song. It really hits the heart. Vince was great on this and man, the backup bank was tremendous. My sons are getting into the beach boy sound - ages 10 and 8 - I hope somehow, someday they appreciate this like I do.

  • OMG.. soooo beautiful!

  • One of my favorite classic songs by one of my favorite composers by one of my favorite singers. Unbelievable rendition, Vince Gill is truly a gift to singers. As a musician for nearly 40 years Brian Wilson's genius was something I grew up with and still appreciate tremendously today. Musical influences of the 1960's transformed my life and I still perform today because of people like Brian Wilson that were instrumental in getting me started. Kudos to a true American musical hero.

  • Booze Daddy? Larry Gatlin Is an EGOTISTICAL ASS HOLE, He stopped his performance in the middle of a song because he did'nt have the total and undivided attention of his audience and bitched at them!! this is why he's no longer a big time star, cause he's a DICK

  • I cannot believe how beautiful this rendition is! Unbelievable.....

  • I'm glad this is on you tube. I saw the tribute and Vince Gill's performance is magic. Brian Wilson wrote this song about the breakup of a relationship - not about Kennedy..."the love of my life, she left me today..." no matter, beautiful performance.

  • @musicnmelody

Actually, Brian wrote the MUSIC "The Warmth Of The Sun". The LYRICS were written by Mike Love.

The melancholy MUSIC that Brian had written was from his sadness over the loss of President Kennedy. Mike proceeded to write lyrics about a loss of a loved one in his life.

  • @Okiemom50 Ive read where Mike stated that he wrote this about the end of the innocent 60s, because the days of clean lilly white days were over, they killed the President! Bad times were to follow and did!!

  • @CLEVERDEVICES What crosby said is a little off mike said they wrote this the night before JFK was assasinated vince will be disinherited disenfranchised discombobulated dismembered and disemboweled by the country music people for doing this song

  • @spacepatrolman why do the country people feel that way? Im confused!

  • @CLEVERDEVICES when the byrds recorded country music on the album sweet heart of the rodeo the country music radio stations refused to play it they dont like hippies they dont like long hairs they dont like yankees they dont like rock music they dont even even like roy orbison

  • @spacepatrolman Than explain the Kentucky Headhunters...long haired hippy freaks, oh wait, thems southern boys right?

Honestly I dont think Vinny is worried about what country folk think about him anymore, he is a success.....he made it, and I know a few shit kickers myself too.

I think youre right about the Byrds......but then a few years later country radio played a black man....Lionel Richie with Stuck on You....oh wait he's from Alabamy!

  • @CLEVERDEVICES having a tribute to brian wilson with musicians that have nothing to do with the beach boys is kind of idiotic anyway like when matt monroe sang beatle songs like frank sinatra

  • what is wrong that this video doesnt load and play entire way thru???

come on youtube don't turn into another yahoo

  • They wrote the song the NIGHT BEFORE!!!!!!!!! does everyone have this incorrect?????????

  • Vince Gill is the closest & the best performer I've heard yet do the warmth of the sun, besides Brian Wilson ,, I just wish he would have got the words right. Thanks Art

  • You've said it all. When my tears dry I'll play it again. Hope you find her.

  • When I was in high school I had the pretiest girl in our class sign my book (good luck to a guy who looks like Brian Wilson)-- I've always been a true BEACH BOYS lover and still am. The warmth of the sun describes what happened to me later in life. The one and only girl i ever loved came and went. I'm still very much in love with her and dream of her all the time. Theres always a thought in the back of my mind that we may get back together one day. Thanks Brian Its a beautiful song! Luv ya San!!

  • Brian wrote the song the night before JFK was assinated.

  • Awesome... great performance of a beautiful song.

  • The vocals are too stylized. The song's beauty is in it's simplicity. Leave this one to Brian. It's a masterpiece that shouldn't be tampered with.

  • The only thing incorrect about this video is the event was not performed at the Kennedy Center. It was performed at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. I was supposed to attend but couldn't make it, but my boyfriend did attend with another friend of ours and they said the show was awesome.

  • Every comment is "spot on"- if there was ever a perfect song with lyrics, harmony and melody- this is it!!!!!!!!!! Timeless!

  • Thank God for YouTube so I was able to see thing again after so many years. Does anyone know if he's recorded this? I've not been able to find it. Thanks

  • BG go and get the DVD "An all star tribute to Brian Wilson". Vince is awesome on this, but the cover of Surfs Up, with Webb, Gill and Crosby is worth the price of the DVD alone.

Worth mentioning also is Brians amazing band, the back ground harmonies are out of this world.

  • I hadn't heard Vince sing this. It's so beautiful. I think Brian would be pleased. Thanks for posting.

  • @BethnJulia

    Brian was at the performance.

  • It dosent get any better than this, takes your breath away!

  • Oh, man, he sings so pretty. What a beautiful performance.

  • A perfect singer singing a perfect song... How awesome is that.

  • amazing

  • All I have to say is this is proof positive that Brian Wilson was probably the most talented musical genius of the past 50 years. And to hear Vince Gill perform this with his beautiful voice, can only add absolute gold to the song.

    Thank you so much Engel.

  • magnificent

  • When I first saw/heard this on tv, the tears streamed down my face. Simply put, this is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. My own version (also posted here) is but a pale shadow.

  • The best song ever written sung by the best voice on earth. Vince Gill is unsurpassed.

  • I pretty much have to agree with you. Vince Gill is not only blessed with one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard, he's also a humble and super-nice guy...

  • The only other artist who could have come close to this level with this song would have been Roy Orbison.

  • no-one, no-one does it better than Brian himself.

  • Arguably the best song ever written and without doubt the most underated Beach Boys song ever! Thank you for posting! PS You're cute xxx

  • I agree with David Crosby..... this is absolutely the finest voice in popular music, today. I'm not a great fan of country music, but Vince walked off the stage knowing that he NAILED this song. Great backup vocals, too!

  • Vince does this song justice~ One of the best songs Brian ever wrote...
