They are disadvantaged only when they are not in lift, which is 0 - 6000 rpm. Most of 2ZZ power/torque is between 6000 and 8300 rpm and it is a very flat curve. Once they get into lift, their gearing and final ratio allows them to stay in the powerband in every gear.

I have mad respect for GTIs, Mazdaspeed3, Civic SI, Celica GTS etc., but I don't have any respect for a 2 door Camry coupe that weighs as much as pig.
Toyotas have VVT-i (only variable valve timing). i-VTEC in RSX Type S engine or Civic SI is i-VTEC, which has lift between 6000 and 8000 rpm. Only 2ZZ-GE had VVTL-i, which has variable valve timing + lift on intake and exhaust cams, which kicks in between 6000 - 8350 rpm.
Well ok, it would be a close race because I believe the GS-R has the same horsepower but it also weighs less than the XRS which would make it run just a little bit faster. But basically the same yes.
Look for race between GS-R and XRS for the video here. An XRS will take a GS-R any day of the week. Search for XRS and GS-R racing videos here youtube. XRS makes more power to wheels.
Dude, you cannot always go by videos on here unless you know for a fact that the Cars are A) both completely stock, and B) then the only way you can be sure is if the same person drives both cars that way there is no difference in skill level between the 2 drivers(for instance take one to the strip and make a run, then use the other and make a run with the same driver) that's really the only way to be absolutely sure which one is faster.
Though, I agree with you driver's skill makes a big difference in how quick a car can be in acceleration/corners. I drive a 330 CI ZHP that runs mid-14s and has 235 HP. It is a close race with the G35 Coupe even with 40 less HP, but weight, gearing etc. make a big difference. I don't think it is because I am a better driver. On the average both cars run similar times.
Videos from different sources should give a good idea. If one car consistently beats another car with both cars being stock or basic bolt-ons then it has to be quicker than the other car.
True and another thing is that the XRS is a six speed so it will accelerate a bit quicker cause it doesn't have to pull as long through each of its gears. So it would be pretty interesting to actually see the 2 at a drag strip in person. But I think it would be VERY close indeed.
True. My buddy's XRS accelerate really well up till 110 mph, but then from 110 - 140 mph, it does not accelerate as strongly, but still definitely not slow. He has some bolt-ons on his XRS. He cannot beat me, but he does hang 2 cars back until 110 mph quite well with my 330CI ZHP that runs 14.3 - 14.4 secs at the dragstrip. His XRS runs high-14s.
Not bad at all. I have an 01 VR6 that is bone stock. I haven't had a chance to take it up to the strip yet. But I have raced a couple of XRS's on the street and it is kinda close through my 1st and 2nd gears but once I hit 3rd, it's all over. I just pull extremely hard on them. But hey that's a V6 vs an inline4 for ya.
I have been through with you on this. You are heavily modded and have weight reduction or maybe a bad driver in XRS. I can decimate stock GLIs and GTIs (older one's) in my 235 HP ZHP 330CI, but my buddy's bolt-on XRS puts up a very good fight. I have been through with you on this. Their extra lightweight is their great weapon especially at higher speeds. 2ZZ-GE pulls the hardest in 3rd and 4th gear because of their high revving engines and aggressive gearing.
You can put a big fart pipe, ironing board wing, yellow stickers, and a Type-R JDM Vspec kinetisizer and the Mustang would still kill Granny's Corolla.

Vtec and VVT-i run on the same basic thing, they have a separate set of cam lobes to keep their valves open longer, difference between them is that Vtec opens the exhaust valves longer, and VVT-i opens the intake valves longer, the i-Vtec and VVTL-i systems do both, difference between those 2 is that i-Vtec kicks in at 5800 RPM's and VVTL-i kicks in at 6200. I just use Vtec as a generic term but I do know the difference and who makes what.
Basically both have the same concept but the VVTL-I goes off when u shift and that is a huge disadvantage to VTEC but it's cool, both engines are good.

VVTL-I is much better than V-TEC...there is more of a difference in the vvtl-i than v-tec.... its a fact jump in a honda then a corolla u let me know
