  • as if Nic Jones was not inspiring enough.......Thank you for posting this. You inspire me just as Nic does, to do more with my music. Peace and Love, from Scotland

  • Hi Phil, I have added a video response. I have taken some liberties with your arrangement- I hope you don't mind (this is folk music after all !) A truly beautiful tune and your arrangement is very inspiring :)

  • Beautiful playing, lovely tone.

  • Phil that is wonderful. Do you know if tab exists for those tunes? And what tuning ate you using?

  • @malcolmpaine Hi Malcolm. Thanks for your comment. The tuning is CGCGCD (C with an add 9). If you go to my website there are some basic shapes shown (should you need them to get started). With regard to a tab; because I make my living from music, I make a small charge of £2 per tab (easily done through PAYPAL) and I can send you one if you message me with a private e-mail address. All the best. Phil

  • That guitar sounds amazing

  • WOW! I loved that! Fantastic!

  • Man. Thank you! You moved me to tears today.

  • Incredible sounds. I love the English style, vocal and words. The tone of that guitar is amazing even on YouTube it comes through very clearly. Beyond compare.

  • @clarkewi Thank you. All the best.

  • great!.....looking forward to seeing you in Marple on the 13th!...hey Phil...if you're Scunthorpe Utd, i must be a junior under-13 side in the Cheshire schools league!

  • That's perfectly played, well done Phil

  • Kickin' ass!

  • Great to hear people keep Nic Jones' mosic/arrangements alive! :)

I have uploaded several album songs of Nic Jones on my channel (only from the albums that are not available commercially anymore).

  • I'm ashamed to say I only discovered Nick Jones today after hearing Candee-i-o played on the radio. Got straight on to YTube and found you. I am in awe of your amazing guitar skills - my greatest regret is leaving it so late in life to start playing - I will definitely not live long enough to be this good! - Marian

  • This is great - bought back a flood of memories... well what I can remember of it all, anyway...

  • LOL. Cheers!

  • Nice one Phil. Good guitar too :) My Orsino is also 1979 - (#1837). It's also tuned CGCGCD at the moment.

  • I really like this sort of music but have never really played anything like this. Could you recommend some other tunes like this for me to learn? Thanks

  • Hi Andy,

You could do a lot worse than to access a copy of 'O'Neills' book of jigs and reels, or better still buy a CD of the harp music of Turlough O'Carolan (plenty available on line). In CD terms any albums by Tony McManus, El McMeen, Tony Cuffe or Dick Gaughan may be useful. There's also a few tunes like this on my albums! Cheers Phil

  • Hi Phil, This has to be my favourite of all your vids by a large margin. Like I told you a few weeks ago, my own arrangement of Si Bheg Si Mhor is a pathetic one in Drop D, very inferior to this. Any chance of the tabs???? I've tried following your fingers, but the vid is too dark. Just Si Bheg, (beg beg beg). I'll try Planxty Davis on my own as soon as I can arrange a talent transplant.

  • No problem Chris. I'll sort it when I get a minute. Check out the comment on 'Demonstrating a Larrivee'.

  • beautiful piece and your guitar sounds absolutely amazing. I love it

  • Thanks Phil. Just wonderful. Brilliant playing and that gorgeous Fylde sounds stunning! Here, here on the "buy nic jones music" comment. I`ve bought everything available and it`s all beautiful. Shame the "gentleman" who owns the rights to nic`s first four albums wouldn`t release them!

  • Darned shyster I say. I kind of know him (shamefully!)

    Thanks for the comments

    Cheers

    Phil

  • this is the best guitar version of si bheg si mhor that i have heard the arrangement ,tone and playing are superb

what guitar are you playing the sone is amazing

  • Hello there,

    Thanks for your kind comments.

The guitar is a 1979 Fylde Orsino (UK) tuned to CGCGCD.

    All the best

    Phil

  • Thank you for all the wonderful videos.

  • The first piece you played has inspired me to join the Folk Music Club at my university, hopefully I can learn to be as polished as you! I really enjoyed your playing.

  • Thanks for your comments. It's good to know someone has taken something from my ramblings! If you ever get a minute, e-mail me the contact details for the organiser of the folk club/society - maybe they might give me a gig!

    All the best

    Phil

  • how long you been playing? you sound really experieced :]

  • Hi there,

Too bloody long, and not experienced enough!

No, seriously, about 28 years (20 of them as a pro or semi- pro playing in folk, blues and roots clubs, groups set-ups etc.) I have stacks of experience but I'm learning all the time and now I'm bleedin' middle-aged!

    All the very best

    Phil

  • What is this tuning?

  • Hello there,

The tuning is CGCGCD. Great for this sort of stuff!

    All the best

    Phil

  • Hi Phil, any joy wih those tabs?

    Cheers mate,

    Kev :0)

  • Not had time mate. They don't tend to be priority as I get nothing for them, but give me week or so, and an e-mail address (have you already done this?) and I'll send them to you.

    Cheers for now

  • I am absolutely smitten with your playing and singing, Phil. There are few folk singers/guitarists that I have heard that I would put up there with Jones, Carthy, Foley, etc. but you make that short list in my humble opinion. Is that an Orsino or Falstaff? Too dark for me to make out. I own a 1980 Falstaff:) Fyldes rock and so do you!

    Zac

  • Hi Zac,

Thanks for your kind words. The guitar is an Orsino (not as nice as the Falstaff!), although I don't use it these days for live stuff; tend to play my old Lowden! Catch up at a gig if you can make one next year, and don't forget to rate the vid(s)!

    All the best

    Phil

  • I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for posting it. That guitar sounds huge.

  • That was ridiculously good and the guitar sounds fantastic! What gauge strings did you put on for being that low?

Do you have a tab for the Nic Jones track? I discovered 'Penguin Eggs' a couple of years ago but it's hard to find tabs.

    Kev :0)

  • Hello Kev,

The string gauges are 53-12 which I use for virtually everything! However, there are no existent tabs for Nic Jones stuff as far as I know but I could do you one for you if you leave me an address to send it to. I can't do it online!

    Cheers

    Phil

  • Phil that would be Amazing! I'd be really grateful if you could send me the tab!

I'll message you with my address

    Kev :0)

  • Hi Phil,

Do you use light or medium string?

ALso take a look of the video I posted for Nic Jones produced from his concert held in Italy before his tragic car accident. We still all miss this Great Guy.

  • That was absolutely beautiful mate! I've been lately thinking about the song Caledonia by Dougie McLean and I believe it's on open C. You just inspired me brother in more ways than you know! Thank you! Mark

  • N1 Phil.... Could listen to you for hours....5***** and shared..

  • Gee thanks pal. After years of trying unsuccesfully to play rock and blues, I have returned to my first love.....folk music. I was so proud of working out my own arrangement of Si Bheag Si Mhor (not a patch on yours, but all mine) and then I hear you call it "an old chestnut". Took all the joy out of it. Nicely played though, I really enjoyed it.

  • Just brilliant!

  • Lovely one Phil - such a joy to hear this!

  • You are a God my man! Super stuff and beautifully played. Nic is indeed the Best - his playing is sorely missed; we have all been robbed of his contribution. You capture his feel beautifully, introducing great elements of your own.

  • Many people don't know that after the CD " Penguin Eggs " another new CD with live performances has been produced thanks also some Italian friends that sent tapes of live performance to Nic's wife. The title of this CD is " In Search of Nic Jone". I am one that long time friends and I am proud that many old & new fans still appreciate Nic' music.

  • There are a zillion arrangements for Si Bheag Si Mhor - this has to be one of the best I've ever heard. Beautiful ringing harp tones. Planxty Davis is also beautifully arranged and played. Terrific stuff!! Where can I buy your CDs?
